The safest way to update a Windows 11 Wi‑Fi driver is to check Settings > Windows Update, including Optional updates. If Windows offers no suitable driver, use Device Manager or download the exact package for your laptop, desktop, or USB/PCIe adapter from its manufacturer. Save a backup driver before uninstalling anything, especially when the PC has no Ethernet or working Wi‑Fi.
What a Wi‑Fi driver does—and what it cannot fix
A driver is the software Windows uses to communicate with the wireless network adapter. Updating it can resolve compatibility, stability, or detection problems, but it will not repair every Wi‑Fi fault. A router or ISP outage, Airplane mode, a hardware switch, power-management settings, VPN or firewall software, weak signal, or a failed adapter can produce similar symptoms.
Do not update solely because a newer package exists if Wi‑Fi is working normally. On laptops, the manufacturer-tested driver may be a better fit than a newer generic package.

- Save open work and connect the laptop to AC power.
- Identify the PC model, service tag or product number, and Windows 11 edition if the manufacturer asks for them.
- Record the current driver date and version (instructions below).
- If Wi‑Fi is unavailable, download a known-good driver on another device and copy it to a USB flash drive before removing anything.
1. Check Windows Update first
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted.
- For driver packages that are not installed automatically, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, select the relevant wireless or network entry, choose Download and install, and restart.
Windows Update distributes recommended drivers, while optional driver updates require you to choose them. The package shown may be an OEM-approved version rather than the newest generic release. Install only entries that clearly match your wireless hardware. See Microsoft’s driver-update guidance.

2. Check the adapter and installed driver
- Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters. Look for names containing Wi‑Fi, Wireless, WLAN, 802.11, Intel, Realtek, MediaTek, Qualcomm, or Broadcom.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, note Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version. Read Device status for an error code or warning.

3. Update through Device Manager
Let Windows search
- In Device Manager, right-click the Wi‑Fi adapter and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and follow the prompts.
- Restart if requested.
This search is useful, but it is not necessarily broader or newer than Windows Update.

Install files you already downloaded
- Right-click the adapter, choose Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select the folder containing the extracted driver files and enable Include subfolders if the option appears.
- Complete the installation and restart.

- Laptop or prebuilt desktop: Start with the exact computer manufacturer’s support page and model or service tag. OEM drivers can include system-specific power, BIOS, antenna, and Bluetooth integration.
- Separate USB or PCIe adapter: Use the adapter maker’s official page. Match the exact model and hardware revision (such as V1, V2, or V3).
- Chip manufacturer: Intel, Realtek, MediaTek, Qualcomm, or Broadcom packages can be useful when the OEM has no suitable release, but they are a secondary choice for many laptops.
A package that says the hardware is unsupported usually means the model, revision, Windows version, architecture, or selected adapter is wrong. Return to Device Manager and verify the exact device instead of trying random installers. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities: they can select the wrong package, replace a stable OEM driver, and complicate rollback.

Install a driver when the PC is offline
- On the affected PC, identify the computer or adapter model in Device Manager or on its label.
- Using another Internet-connected computer, open the official manufacturer support page and download the Windows 11 wireless driver.
- Copy the installer or extracted driver folder to a USB flash drive.
- Move it to the affected PC, run the installer, or use Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers.
This is Microsoft’s recommended approach when Windows cannot detect Wi‑Fi during setup or recovery: download the adapter driver elsewhere and copy it to USB media.
Reinstall the driver when updating does not help
Reinstall only after saving a backup driver. Removing the only network driver can leave an offline PC without wireless access.

- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the Wi‑Fi adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows. It will attempt to redetect the adapter and install a driver.
- If it does not recover, install the manufacturer package saved on the PC or USB drive.
Undo a bad update
- Open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab in Device Manager.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available, then restart.
- If the button is unavailable, install the previous known-good package from the PC manufacturer.
Rollback may be unavailable when Windows has no earlier driver package stored. If the problem began after a broader Windows update, use the appropriate Windows recovery option rather than repeatedly reinstalling the adapter.

- Confirm Wi‑Fi is on, Airplane mode is off, and any physical switch or function-key toggle is enabled.
- Restart both the PC and router. Test the same network on another device, then test the PC on a phone hotspot or another network.
- Run the Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- If the adapter is installed but connectivity remains broken, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsRestart afterward if requested. These commands reset Winsock/TCP-IP, renew addressing, and flush DNS; they do not update the driver.

Network reset: last resort
Use Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset > Reset now only after the steps above. Windows removes network adapters and settings, reinstalls them after restarting, and may require you to reconfigure VPN software, Hyper‑V switches, or other virtual networking.
When the adapter is missing
If it is absent from Network adapters, check View > Show hidden devices and Other devices. Confirm the hardware switch and BIOS wireless setting, install the exact manufacturer driver manually, and check that a removable desktop or laptop adapter is seated correctly. If Windows still cannot detect it, firmware problems or hardware failure are more likely than a routine driver update.
If Bluetooth also stopped working, check the separate Bluetooth category and the manufacturer’s Bluetooth package; combined wireless modules often use separate drivers.
