As of August 18, 2026, macOS Tahoe 26.6 is Apple’s latest release overall. Sequoia 15.7.8 and Sonoma 14.8.8 remain the latest releases in their respective branches. Your Mac may not be able to run Tahoe: Software Update offers only macOS versions compatible with your model. Use Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update to check what is available, and make a current backup before a major upgrade.
Latest macOS versions as of August 18, 2026
Apple’s release list identifies these latest versions for the macOS branches below. Releases can change, so check Apple’s security releases list for the newest numbers.

An update is a release within the same macOS generation, such as Sonoma 14.8.7 to 14.8.8. An upgrade moves to another major release, such as Sequoia 15 to Tahoe 26. “Latest” can mean latest overall or latest compatible with your specific Mac; those are not always the same.
Check which macOS your Mac is running
- Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Read the macOS name and version. On some versions of macOS, clicking the version number reveals the build number.
The window’s appearance varies across macOS releases. Apple’s version-check guide shows what to look for. Note your Mac’s model and year as well: in About This Mac, those details help you check whether a major upgrade is supported.

Check whether your Mac can run Tahoe
Tahoe compatibility is model-specific. Apple lists these Mac families as compatible:
- MacBook Air with Apple silicon, introduced in 2020 or later.
- MacBook Pro with Apple silicon, introduced in 2020 or later.
- MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020) with four Thunderbolt 3 ports.
- MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019).
- Mac mini introduced in 2020 or later.
- iMac introduced in 2020 or later.
- Mac Studio introduced in 2022 or later.
- Mac Pro introduced in 2019 or later.
Check Apple’s Tahoe upgrade requirements before proceeding. A compatible Mac may still lack some Tahoe features; feature availability can depend on model, country, region, and language. For Sequoia, Sonoma, and older releases, use the compatibility links on Apple’s macOS update page rather than relying on an outdated model list.
If you are on Sequoia or Sonoma, being on the newest numbered release for that branch does not by itself establish that Tahoe is available for your Mac. Software Update filters its offers to compatible software. If Tahoe does not appear, check the exact model against Apple’s list before assuming something is wrong.

Make a backup
Before a major upgrade, make sure you have a recent, completed backup that you can restore. Apple recommends backing up before installing Tahoe; Time Machine with an external storage device is one option. Apple says a Time Machine disk should ideally have at least twice the capacity of the data being backed up, to leave room for backup history. That is a recommendation, not a universal installation requirement.

Cloud syncing through iCloud can keep selected files and data in sync, but it is not necessarily a complete, restorable backup of your Mac. For Time Machine advice, see Apple’s guidance on backing up and restoring. If a backup fails, check the disk connection and available capacity; Apple also lists VPN, antivirus, and other security software among possible factors to investigate in its Time Machine troubleshooting guide.
Check storage, power, and internet
- Storage: In Ventura 13 and later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Older versions may have a Storage view under About This Mac. Apple does not specify one free-space figure that applies to every upgrade. If the installer reports that space is insufficient, follow its warning and free space; Apple’s storage guide suggests reviewing large files, downloads, unused apps, local device backups, and Trash.
- Power: Connect a MacBook to power rather than starting an installation on a low battery.
- Internet: Use a stable connection. Installation may need internet access to download macOS, firmware, and Mac-specific information. Captive-portal Wi-Fi, such as some hotel or café networks, can interfere, especially in Recovery.
- Time and peripherals: Allow for multiple restarts. Avoid closing the lid or forcing a shutdown while installation is progressing. If troubleshooting, disconnect nonessential peripherals.
Check essential apps and devices before a major upgrade
If the Mac is used for work, live production, or a business-critical task, confirm that key applications and their plug-ins, VPN clients, security tools, drivers, printers, audio equipment, and other peripherals support the macOS version you plan to install. A major upgrade can affect compatibility. If a critical tool has not been validated and Apple is still issuing security updates for your current branch, it can be reasonable to stay on that branch temporarily while you check. Do not confuse that choice with skipping available security updates.
Update macOS in System Settings
On Ventura 13 and later:
- Connect your MacBook to power and join a reliable internet connection.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select General > Software Update.
- Wait for the Mac to check for available software.
- Choose the button offered for the item you want. Depending on the release and type of software, it may say Update, Upgrade, Restart Now, or use another label.
- Enter an administrator password or accept license terms if prompted.
- Leave the Mac to restart and finish the installation.
For older macOS versions, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update and follow the prompts. Labels and layout vary. Apple describes Software Update as the simplest route and says it shows only software compatible with your Mac. See Apple’s macOS update instructions.
Move from Sequoia or Sonoma to Tahoe
- Check your current version in About This Mac, then confirm your model is on Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list.
- Make and verify a backup, check free space, and confirm that essential apps and devices are ready for the upgrade.
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and look for Tahoe under available upgrades or updates.
- If it is offered and you are ready, select the displayed upgrade option and follow the prompts.
If Tahoe is not offered, do not assume that repeatedly checking will make an incompatible Mac eligible. Check your model, install any available update for your current macOS, and consider whether a school or employer manages update policies on the device. What to expect during installation
The download may take longer than the installation. The Mac can pause during preparation or verification, show an Apple logo and progress bar, display a black screen, and restart more than once. The first login after a major upgrade may also take longer while macOS completes setup and background work. A briefly unchanged progress bar is not proof that installation has failed, and there is no single percentage or time limit that applies to every Mac. Give the process time and look for signs that the Mac is still working before intervening.
If Software Update says your Mac is up to date
That message does not necessarily mean the Mac is on the newest major macOS. Common explanations include:
- Your Mac is on the latest release compatible with its model, but cannot run the newer major version.
- You already have the newest update for the branch you are using.
- A current-version update or intermediate step has not appeared yet.
- A temporary network or Software Update problem is preventing the check.
- Your Mac is managed by an employer or school that restricts updates.
Check the Mac model and year in About This Mac, compare them with Apple’s compatibility information, restart and check again, and install any available update for your current branch. Not enough storage space
Open System Settings > General > Storage on Ventura or later. Remove or move files you no longer need, review old installers and local iPhone or iPad backups, and empty Trash. Restart and retry. Safe Mode may temporarily clear some caches, but it is not a replacement for removing unneeded data. See Apple’s storage instructions.

Download or internet error
Try a reliable network instead of captive-portal Wi-Fi. Restart the Mac and, if appropriate, the router. A VPN, firewall, content filter, or security tool can sometimes interfere with network access; only disable or remove such software if you understand the security implications and can safely restore it. Retry Software Update. Apple explains internet requirements and related installation errors here.
Damaged, unverifiable, or uninstallable update
- Restart the Mac and try Software Update again.
- If the problem persists, start macOS Recovery and try reinstalling macOS or running Disk Utility First Aid.
- If you are using an installer you downloaded earlier, remove it and obtain a fresh installer through Apple’s official route.
- If the Mac still fails, seek Apple Support. On Apple-silicon or T2-equipped Macs, firmware revive or restore may occasionally be needed; this is an escalation, not a routine update step.
Apple’s installation-error guide covers these recovery options. Do not erase the Mac as an early troubleshooting step: erasing removes local data. Consider it only after less-destructive options have failed and you have verified a usable backup.
The Mac will not start normally after the update
If the installer is still visibly progressing, wait. If the Mac is genuinely unresponsive for an extended period, you may need to shut it down and enter Recovery. Try Disk Utility’s First Aid, then reinstall macOS without erasing the disk where possible. Restore from Time Machine if needed; contact Apple Support for persistent startup, firmware, or hardware symptoms. Apple identifies macOS Recovery as a route to reinstall macOS when an update fails or the system will not start.

Recovery is useful when Software Update repeatedly fails, macOS will not start, or you need to run Disk Utility. Startup differs between Apple-silicon and Intel Macs:

- Apple silicon: Shut down. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear, select Options, then continue into Recovery. From there, choose Reinstall macOS or open Disk Utility as appropriate.
- Intel: The startup-key procedure differs from Apple silicon. Follow Apple’s instructions for your Mac model rather than using the Apple-silicon steps.
Apple’s Apple-silicon Recovery guide and download and install guide explain the appropriate options. If Recovery needs to download macOS, use a reliable connection; some captive-portal networks will not work.
Other installation methods
The App Store or Apple’s official installer downloads can help when Software Update does not provide an installer you need. They are alternatives, not a reason to use third-party “Mac updater” utilities; for most people Software Update is the straightforward first choice. Terminal commands and bootable installers are mainly useful for administrators and experienced users managing multiple Macs, working offline, or performing a controlled installation. They can introduce data-loss risk, especially if an installation involves erasing or reformatting a disk. Follow Apple’s official installation guidance and back up before using advanced methods.
Choose when to install a major upgrade
Install the latest major macOS when your Mac is compatible, essential apps and peripherals are ready, you want the new release, and you have a verified backup. If you depend on unvalidated professional software, older peripherals, extensions, virtual machines, or a business-critical setup, check compatibility first and consider a temporary delay. A Mac without a backup, with a nearly full startup disk, unresolved crashes, or an organizational update policy should not be rushed into a major upgrade.

Minor security updates are a separate decision from a major upgrade. Apple was listing security releases for Tahoe, Sequoia, and Sonoma as of August 18, 2026. Install applicable security updates unless you have a specific compatibility or business reason not to; staying on a supported branch does not automatically mean you are missing every security fix.
Turn on automatic updates
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update, then review Automatic Updates. Depending on macOS version, controls may separately manage checking for updates, downloading them, installing macOS updates, installing security responses and system files, and updating App Store apps. The wording varies, so check what each control does on your Mac. Automatic updates are convenient for many people; managed Macs and production systems may need an administrator’s policy or application testing before installing a major release.
