For most Samsung Smart TVs, open Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now and follow the prompts. Older models may omit “All Settings.” If the TV cannot connect or the online update fails, use firmware downloaded for the exact U.S. model on a FAT32 USB drive. Do not turn off the TV or remove the USB drive while an update is installing.
Before you update
- For an online update, connect the TV to stable Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- For a USB update, note the TV’s exact model code first; a series name or screen size is not enough to choose firmware.
- Allow time for the download, installation, and restart. Samsung says updates usually take a few minutes, but duration varies by model, update, and connection; its guidance does not establish one time that applies to every set. See Samsung’s U.S. update instructions.
- Keep the TV powered during installation. Picture and sound settings may return to their defaults after an update, so be prepared to set them again.
Update the TV over the internet
- Press Home on the Samsung remote.
- Open Settings, then select All Settings if that option appears.
- Choose Support → Software Update → Update Now.
- Let the TV check for an update. If one is available, follow any confirmation prompt and wait while it downloads and installs.
- Wait for the TV to restart before using it.
On some older models, the route is Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. Labels and menu locations vary by model and software version. If neither route matches, consult the manual or support page for your exact model. Samsung’s current U.S. instructions are at samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002051/.
If the TV reports that no update is available, it means no newer compatible update was offered through that check. It does not by itself indicate a fault. If you need to confirm the version or investigate a known problem, check the download page for the exact model before trying USB.

- Open Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update (older menus may omit All Settings).
- Select Auto Update to switch the setting on or off.
Auto Update requires an internet connection. Samsung says an update may download while the TV is in use and apply the next time it is turned on; the exact behavior can depend on the model. Auto Update concerns TV software, not a promise that every third-party app updates through the same process. If you turn it off, check manually from time to time. Samsung notes it may already be on if you accepted Smart Hub terms during initial setup. See Samsung’s update instructions.

Find the model code and check the installed version
Before downloading firmware, identify the complete model code on the TV. To check the installed software version, look under Settings → Support → About This TV or, on some models, Settings → Support → Contact Samsung. The location and wording differ, so use the manual or Samsung support page for your model if those options are absent. Write down or photograph both the model code and software version.
Use that exact model code in Samsung’s U.S. Download Center. Compare the listed firmware with the TV’s installed version, and follow the model page’s compatibility details. Do not use a file for a similar-looking model or one listed for another market.

Update with a USB flash drive
Use USB if the TV is offline, the network update fails, or Samsung lists a newer applicable firmware package for the exact model. This method requires a computer and a USB flash drive. The official U.S. instructions specify FAT32 and require the extracted files to be at the drive’s top level.
Prepare the USB drive on a computer
- Open the Samsung U.S. Download Center and search using the TV’s exact model code.
- Open that model’s support page and locate its firmware under downloads or software. Download only firmware listed for that model and applicable U.S. market.
- Unzip the downloaded archive.
- Use an empty USB drive formatted as FAT32. Copy all extracted files and folders to the drive’s root (top level), not inside an extra enclosing folder. If Samsung’s archive includes multiple files or folders, copy the full extracted contents.
- Safely eject the drive. Do not rename or modify the firmware files unless the model-specific Samsung instructions tell you to.
Install the update on the TV
- Turn on the TV and insert the USB drive into a TV USB port. Some models may show an update prompt automatically.
- If no prompt appears, open Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. Older models may omit All Settings.
- Confirm the update if asked and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Leave the drive connected and the TV powered until the installation finishes and the TV restarts. Remove the drive only after the process is complete.
If the TV cannot find an update, check the model code, that the firmware is newer than the installed version, the FAT32 format, and the file placement. Samsung’s step-by-step guidance is at Update the software on your Samsung smart TV or monitor.

Fix common update problems
Software Update is grayed out
A streaming app running in the background can make the option unavailable. Exit the app and return to the Home screen, or switch to the TV source or press Samsung TV Plus on the remote, then check again. Samsung describes this fix in its U.S. update instructions.
The online update will not connect or complete
- Confirm that the TV is connected to the internet and that other devices can get online.
- Try Ethernet if available, or restart the TV and router before trying again.
- A phone hotspot or another network can help distinguish a TV issue from a home-network issue. Treat a hotspot as a diagnostic test: downloading firmware can use mobile data.
- If the network remains unreliable, use USB firmware from the exact model’s U.S. support page. Samsung also lists USB updating as an alternative in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
The TV says no update is available
Check the internet connection, then compare the installed version with the firmware listed for the exact model in Samsung’s Download Center. If the menu is unavailable while an app is running, exit the app first. Use USB only when Samsung lists a newer file for that model; do not try firmware from another model or region. If no newer file is listed, troubleshoot the original issue rather than trying to force an update.

The TV or an app seems stuck
Do not interrupt an installation that is still showing progress. If the TV has finished updating but is behaving abnormally, try a cold boot: hold the remote’s Power button until the TV turns off and on again (Samsung says this generally takes about five seconds). Without the remote, unplug the TV for 30 seconds and reconnect it. Samsung includes these steps in its app troubleshooting guidance.

Picture or sound changed after updating
Check your picture and sound preferences and set them again if they have returned to defaults. A firmware update does not guarantee a fix for every picture, sound, or app issue. For example, Samsung cites firmware version 1371.0 or higher only for a specific 7 Series Crystal UHD HDMI-source issue; that number is not a general recommendation for other TVs. Verify the update and know when to contact Samsung
After the restart, confirm that the Home screen and apps load, then check the software version using the model-dependent About This TV or Contact Samsung route. Test the issue that led you to update and restore picture or sound preferences if needed. Sign back into an app only if it asks.
Contact Samsung Support if installation repeatedly fails through both online and USB methods, the TV will not boot normally after an update, the correct model firmware is unavailable or ambiguous, or the original hardware symptom persists. Samsung’s official U.S. firmware destination is the Download Center; do not install firmware from unofficial sites.
What a TV software update changes
TV firmware is Samsung’s operating software for the television. It is distinct from Smart Hub, Samsung’s platform and services layer, and from individual apps such as Netflix or YouTube. Updating TV firmware does not update a connected cable box, game console, streaming stick, soundbar, or Blu-ray player. Some Smart Hub or app problems may instead call for app or Smart Hub updates and troubleshooting; Samsung explains this in its app troubleshooting guide.
