In the new Google Sites editor, unpublishing takes the public version of your site offline while keeping the editable Google Drive file. Open the site on a computer, use the drop-down arrow beside Publish, choose Unpublish, and confirm. You can publish the site again later.
Before you unpublish
- These steps apply primarily to the new Google Sites editor, not classic Google Sites.
- Sign in to the account that owns the site. An editor may not have permission to control publication or domain settings.
- Record the current
sites.google.comaddress and any custom domain. - Decide whether the site should be completely offline or simply available to a private group. Restricting viewers may be a better choice for a class, team, family, or client.
How to unpublish a Google Site
- Go to sites.google.com in a desktop browser.
- Open the editable site. Do not open only the public URL.
- In the upper-right corner, find Publish.
- Click the small arrow or publish-options menu immediately beside it.
- Select Unpublish.
- Confirm if Google displays a confirmation prompt.
Google occasionally changes interface labels and placement. If you do not see the command, look for Unpublish or similarly worded wording in the menu beside Publish, rather than in the general site menu.
Check that public access has ended
Open the former public address in a private/incognito window, while signed out, or from another browser or device. If you use a custom domain, test that address as well as the standard Google Sites address. Do not rely only on the editor or preview: owners and editors can still access the editable file after the public version is unpublished.

Unpublishing stops normal access through the published site. It does not remove copies that someone downloaded, screenshotted, embedded, archived, or independently copied. Old search results or cached links may also remain visible for a while; Google does not promise instantaneous search-index removal.

Unpublish is not delete

Hiding a page only removes it from navigation. Google notes that a hidden page can still be opened by anyone who has its direct link, so it is not a privacy solution. To delete a new Google Site, Google documents More → Remove; permanent deletion occurs after the file is removed from Google Drive trash. How to publish the site again
- Open the editable site in Google Sites.
- Click Publish.
- Review or enter the web address.
- Review the published-site visibility setting if Google asks.
- Click Publish again.
- Open the public URL in a private window to confirm it is live.
Google Sites addresses commonly use a format such as sites.google.com/domain/sitename, although the exact address depends on your account and domain configuration. Review the URL and visibility settings rather than assuming every previous publication setting will be restored unchanged. What happens to drafts and unpublished edits?
Unpublishing does not discard draft work. Google Sites keeps the editable draft separate from the version visitors last saw. Editing the file does not automatically make those changes public; you publish when you are ready. Google’s side-by-side review can show draft changes against the currently published version before you publish.

Unpublish, restrict, hide, or delete?
- Unpublish: Choose this when nobody should reach the public site, such as during a temporary shutdown or while preparing a replacement.
- Restrict viewers: Choose Share with others, review the Published site sharing setting, and limit it to selected people or an organization. This preserves access for a private audience. Draft and published-site permissions are separate; see Google’s sharing guidance.
- Hide a page: Use only to make a page less prominent. A direct link can still open it.
- Delete: Use More → Remove only when you intend to place the site file in Drive trash.
Custom-domain considerations
Unpublishing a Google Site is not the same as canceling a domain registration or deleting DNS records. A custom domain may become unavailable for the unpublished site, but the domain subscription and DNS settings remain separate. If you are launching a replacement, decide whether to leave DNS in place temporarily or point it to the new service. Do not delete DNS records automatically: they may also support email, verification, or other services.

To remove the Google Sites mapping itself, use Settings → Custom domains. Google permits up to five custom domains per site and says changes can take up to 48 hours to appear. Check the custom-domain documentation for ownership, DNS, and propagation details.
Google Workspace and ownership issues
On work or school accounts, an administrator may control whether Sites is available, who owns the file, and which domains can be connected. Shared-drive policies, ownership transfers, or account deactivation can also affect access. If you cannot unpublish a site you can edit, ask the owner or Workspace administrator; do not assume every administrator can change every site.

Troubleshooting
“I cannot find Unpublish.”
Confirm that you opened the editable site, are signed in as the owner, and are using a wide desktop browser window. Expand the arrow immediately beside Publish. If the site is classic Google Sites, its controls differ. Organizational restrictions or a changed interface label may also be responsible.
“The site still opens for me.”
Test while signed out or in a private window. Your editor access does not prove that unauthenticated visitors can still view the published site.

“The custom domain still resolves.”
Check whether the Google Sites mapping was removed, whether DNS still points to Google, whether a browser cache or separate redirect is involved, and whether propagation is still in progress. A resolving domain does not necessarily mean the Google Site is still publicly published.
“I clicked Remove by mistake.”
For a new Google Site, check Google Drive trash and restore the file before permanent deletion. Classic Sites follow a separate legacy restoration process; do not mix those instructions with the new editor.
“A hidden page is still accessible.”
That is expected if the page was only removed from navigation. Unpublish the entire site or change published-site sharing if the page must not be reachable through the site.

The Bottom Line
Use Unpublish in the menu beside Publish to take a new Google Site offline without deleting its editable file. Verify the result while signed out, and use Publish again when you are ready to restore public access.
