On current Ubuntu Desktop, the old “Ubuntu Software Center” is usually called App Center. In Ubuntu 26.04, open App Center → Manage, select the application, click Uninstall, and authenticate with your password. Ubuntu 24.04 and some older releases instead show Installed → Remove. The labels differ, but the operation is the same.

These instructions apply to Ubuntu Desktop’s graphical software manager. Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS and other distributions may use different applications.

Before you uninstall

  • Save your work and close the application.
  • Check whether it stores important projects, databases or other files. Removing a package does not automatically erase personal documents.
  • Confirm that you selected the intended package format if both a Snap and Debian package are installed.
  • Read the complete confirmation dialog. Cancel if it proposes removing desktop, networking, display, driver or other essential packages you did not expect.

Ubuntu 26.04: remove an application in App Center

Ubuntu’s current 26.04 documentation uses the following path: App Center removal instructions.

  1. Open App Center from the Dock. If it is not visible, open Activities and search for Software.
  2. Select Manage in the sidebar.
  3. Browse the installed applications or search for the application.
  4. Select the application’s entry and verify its package information.
  5. Click Uninstall.
  6. Review any proposed dependency removals, then confirm only if the list is expected.
  7. Enter your account password when prompted and wait for the operation to finish.

The application should no longer be marked as installed, and its launcher will normally disappear from the application grid. Shared libraries and other dependencies can remain when another package still needs them.

Ubuntu 24.04 and older interface labels

Some Ubuntu releases use the alternate wording documented in Ubuntu’s help pages:

  1. Open App Center or search Activities for Software.
  2. Choose Installed at the top.
  3. Select the application.
  4. Click Remove, confirm, and enter your password.

If your screen says Installed and Remove, use that path. If it says Manage and Uninstall, use the newer path.

Why an application is missing from the list

App Center manages Snap and Debian (.deb) applications, but it is not a universal inventory of every program on your computer. Ubuntu notes that when both Snap and Deb versions exist, the Snap may be listed first (Ubuntu 26.04 documentation).

  • Flatpak: use Flatpak commands or a Flatpak-aware manager.
  • AppImage: it is commonly a standalone executable and may not be registered with App Center.
  • Manual archive or source build: follow the vendor or build project’s uninstall directions.
  • System component: libraries, services, runtimes and drivers may not have an obvious desktop name.
  • Busy package system: wait for an update or installation to finish; do not delete package files manually.

Close and reopen App Center if its installed list has not refreshed. Search by both the friendly application name and, when known, its package name.

Remove a Debian package with APT

Use these commands only for software installed as a Debian package through APT. The package name may differ from the application’s displayed name.

Find the package

apt list --installed 2>/dev/null | grep -i search-term
apt show package-name

Remove the package but retain system-wide configuration

sudo apt remove package-name

Remove the package and its system-wide configuration

sudo apt purge package-name

Read APT’s proposed changes before confirming. Neither command is a universal uninstall method for Snaps, Flatpaks, AppImages or manually copied software.

Clean up unused dependencies

sudo apt autoremove

autoremove can remove packages that were installed as dependencies and are no longer needed. Review the complete list and cancel if an important application or system component appears.

Remove a Snap

App Center can remove Snaps directly on current Ubuntu releases. From a terminal, identify the Snap first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
snap list
sudo snap remove package-name

To request removal of the Snap’s stored data as well, use:

sudo snap remove --purge package-name

Do not remove snapd merely to uninstall one application. Removing the service is a broader change that can affect every Snap on the system.

Remove a Flatpak

List installed Flatpak applications, then remove the required application ID:

flatpak list --app
flatpak uninstall application-id

For a per-user installation, use:

flatpak --user uninstall application-id

Flatpak’s documented --delete-data option removes the application’s data directory and related permissions data:

flatpak uninstall --delete-data application-id

Unused runtimes can be reviewed and removed with:

flatpak uninstall --unused

See the Flatpak uninstall manual for installation scopes and option details.

AppImages and manually installed programs

An AppImage is usually a standalone file. Quit the application, delete the AppImage, and remove any launcher you created for it. Only delete configuration or cache directories after identifying them; do not randomly remove folders under /usr, /opt or your home directory.

Manual archives and source builds can place files in several locations. Use the project’s documented uninstall process rather than guessing which files belong to it.

Data that may remain after uninstalling

Package removal removes the application package, not necessarily everything the application created. Personal documents, projects, downloads, browser profiles, saved games, databases, caches and user preferences can remain. For Snap and Debian applications, cleanup locations vary by application, so there is no universal “delete all data” command. Flatpak’s --delete-data option is the explicit exception described above.

Troubleshooting failed or incomplete removal

The Uninstall or Remove button is disabled

  • The item may be a catalog entry rather than an installed package.
  • Another package operation may be running.
  • The application may have been installed through another format.
  • App Center may not have refreshed its package information.
  • The component may be protected or essential.

Wait for active updates, restart App Center, and check the relevant package manager before trying again.

The icon is still visible

Another format may still be installed. Check each inventory and remove only the matching package:

The confirmation dialog lists unrelated software

Stop and investigate. Removing a package can remove applications that depend on it, as well as meta-packages, network tools, display components, drivers or other foundational software. Take a screenshot or copy the proposed list, then cancel if you cannot explain every item.

App Center will not open

Restart it, log out and back in, or reboot. Check for a package operation already in progress and use the matching APT, Snap or Flatpak command as a temporary alternative. Avoid deleting App Center databases or package-manager state directories unless an official recovery procedure specifically instructs you to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ubuntu Software Center the same as App Center?

“Ubuntu Software Center” is the older name commonly used in searches. Current Ubuntu Desktop documentation generally calls the application App Center, while some releases or Ubuntu-based distributions use Software, Ubuntu Software or GNOME Software.

Can I uninstall a Snap with apt?

No. APT manages Debian packages; identify and remove a Snap with `snap list` and `sudo snap remove package-name`.

Should I remove snapd after uninstalling a Snap?

No. Removing snapd changes system-wide Snap support and can affect other Snap applications. Remove snapd only when you deliberately intend that broader change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I uninstall software with no graphical interface?

Use the package manager for its installation type. APT can remove Debian packages, Snap can remove Snaps, and Flatpak can remove Flatpaks. Older Ubuntu guidance also points to Synaptic for packages without a graphical application, but Synaptic does not list Snaps.

The Bottom Line

Use App Center → Manage → Uninstall on Ubuntu 26.04, or Installed → Remove on older interfaces. If the application is absent, identify whether it is a Deb, Snap, Flatpak, AppImage or manual installation before choosing a removal command.
