To undo a saved WordPress edit, open the post or page, choose the Post or Page tab in the Settings sidebar, select the number beside Revisions, inspect the earlier version, and choose Restore. WordPress 7.0 and later use a redesigned revisions screen; WordPress 6.9 and earlier open the classic comparison screen. Autosaves can recover recent unsaved work, while a website backup is needed for broader rollback.
How do I undo changes in WordPress?
- Open the affected post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Open the Settings sidebar and select the Post or Page tab.
- Select the number beside Revisions.
- Use the revision list or slider to find the version from before the unwanted edit. Review the markers showing blocks that were added, removed, or modified.
- Select Restore for the version you want to make current.
WordPress describes revisions as records of saved drafts and published updates. The restore action changes the post or page to the selected saved version, so inspect it carefully before restoring—especially when several people edit the same content. See the current official workflow in WordPress.org’s Revisions documentation.
Where are revisions in WordPress?
WordPress 7.0 and later
In the block editor, revisions are reached from the editor’s Settings sidebar: choose the Post or Page tab, then click the revisions count. WordPress 7.0 opens the new revisions screen, which combines a revision list and slider with visual markers for added, removed, and modified blocks. The documentation updated on September 28, 2026, includes WordPress 7.1 screenshots and identifies the redesigned screen as a WordPress 7.0 change.

WordPress 6.9 and earlier, or the classic screen
On WordPress 6.9 and earlier, selecting the revisions number opens the classic screen. WordPress 7.0 also includes an Open classic revisions screen link for access to that view. The classic interface compares HTML side by side, provides slider and Next/Previous navigation, and lets you compare any two selected revisions.

Can I recover an autosaved WordPress post?
Yes, when WordPress created an autosave before the crash, lost connection, or browser problem. Autosaves are a separate type of revision and do not overwrite the published post. Return to the editor and look for its recovery warning or link, or select the clearly labeled Autosave in the revisions timeline.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- There is at most one autosave per user for a particular post.
- A newer autosave replaces that user’s previous autosave for the same post.
- Different users on a shared site can each have an autosave for the same post.
- The documented default autosave interval is 60 seconds, but a host, plugin, browser session, or connection can prevent an autosave from completing.
Autosave recovery is for recent unsaved work. It is not the same as restoring an ordinary saved revision or rolling back an entire site. The interval and configuration details are documented in WordPress Developer Resources’ wp-config.php handbook.
Why is an older revision missing?
Retention may be limited
WordPress keeps every revision by default, but administrators can change that behavior with WP_POST_REVISIONS or the wp_revisions_to_keep filter. A positive limit keeps that number of revisions, plus one autosave per user. When the post is updated again, revisions beyond the limit are deleted. Setting the value to false or 0 disables regular revisions but still permits one autosave per post.

The post may not have a saved revision yet
A revision is created when content is saved as a draft or published update. A newly created post with no additional save may therefore have no earlier version to select. In the classic editor, also check Screen Options if the Revisions metabox is hidden.
The missing data may not be part of post revisions
By default, WordPress tracks the title, author, content, and excerpt. Revision history is stored as child records of the associated post. The official documentation does not promise that every plugin field, page-builder state, theme setting, media edit, or external integration is captured in every installation, so a revision cannot be assumed to restore all custom data.

Revisions, autosaves, and backups solve different problems
| Recovery method | Best for | What it changes or restores |
|---|---|---|
| Regular post revision | Undoing a saved edit or published update | An earlier saved state of one post or page |
| Autosave revision | Recovering recent work after a crash or connection loss | Recent unsaved content for a user and post, when an autosave exists |
| Website backup | Plugin, theme, database, media, or site-wide rollback | A broader snapshot, subject to the backup system’s coverage and restore process |
A post revision is not a whole-site backup. WordPress recommends regular automatic backups when preparing for plugin or theme update problems and points administrators toward backup plugins in the Plugin Directory. See the plugin and theme auto-updates guidance. WordPress also describes revisions as history for rolling back a post type, not as a replacement for site-wide recovery; background on post types is available in What Is a Post Type?

Before you restore an older version
- Read the selected revision rather than restoring solely by date.
- Check whether later edits by another author must be retained.
- Confirm that the differences shown are the changes you intend to remove.
- After restoring, review the post’s content and custom fields that your installation displays in the editor.
- Use a site backup—not a post revision—if the problem involves plugins, themes, media, settings, or multiple content types.
