Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On the standard U.S. ABC keyboard layout, press Option (⌥) + Shift (⇧) + ? to type ¿. Because the question mark shares the slash key on that layout, Option + Shift + / is the same shortcut.
Need it now? Copy this character: ¿. The shortcut depends on your active keyboard layout, so use the alternatives below if it produces another symbol.
The fastest method: Option + Shift + ?
- Click in the document, message, browser field, or other text field.
- Hold Option and Shift together.
- Press the key that produces the regular question mark. On a U.S. ABC keyboard, this is Shift + /.
- Release the keys. The result should be ¿.
This is the usual macOS shortcut for the U.S. ABC layout. It works in most ordinary Mac text-entry fields, but an app, remote desktop, virtual machine, terminal, browser shortcut, or keyboard-remapping utility can intercept it.
If the shortcut does not work
The active input source—not just the lettering printed on your physical keyboard—determines the character mapping. Apple notes that the selected input source can make the on-screen arrangement and typed characters differ from the physical keyboard (Apple’s input-source guide).

Check the active input source
Look at the Input menu in the menu bar. If you intended to use the U.S. layout, select ABC and try Option + Shift + ? again. If you still get a different character, inspect the layout instead of guessing which physical key represents ?.
Verify the mapping with Keyboard Viewer
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, choose Edit.
- Select the input source you are using.
- Open Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu in the menu bar.
- Hold Option, Shift, or both to reveal the alternate characters.
Keyboard Viewer shows the actual active layout and its modifier-key layers, including the key that produces ¿ when one exists (Apple’s Keyboard Viewer guide).

Insert ¿ with Character Viewer
Character Viewer is the least layout-dependent option when you do not want to memorize a shortcut.
- Click where the character should appear.
- Choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols in many Mac apps, or choose Show Emoji & Symbols from the Input menu.
- Search for inverted question mark, question mark, or U+00BF.
- Double-click ¿ to insert it.
The exact menu wording can vary by macOS release, localization, and app. Character Viewer is macOS’s built-in tool for inserting symbols and special characters.

Add a Spanish input source for frequent Spanish typing
Adding a Spanish input source is worthwhile if you regularly type accented letters, Spanish punctuation, and complete Spanish sentences. It adds a keyboard layout; it does not change the language of macOS’s menus.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, choose Edit.
- Click the Add button.
- Search for Spanish and add the layout you want.
- Switch layouts from the Input menu in the menu bar.
Apple documents Control + Space for selecting the last-used input source and Control + Option + Space for selecting the next source in the Input menu (Apple’s current input-source instructions). Spanish layouts differ by region, so open Keyboard Viewer after switching rather than assuming that every Spanish keyboard puts ¿ on the same physical key.

Use Unicode Hex Input
For a code-based fallback, use the character’s Unicode code point. Unicode names ¿ the INVERTED QUESTION MARK and assigns it U+00BF (Unicode chart).
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit.
- Click Add, search for Unicode Hex Input, and add it.
- Choose Unicode Hex Input from the Input menu.
- Click in a Unicode-capable text field and hold Option.
- Type 00BF, then release Option.
The result should be ¿. Unicode documents this Option-based hexadecimal method and notes that it accepts characters represented by up to four hexadecimal digits; U+00BF fits that limit (Unicode keyboard FAQ). Specialized apps, remote sessions, or fields that do not accept normal Unicode input may not support it.

Copy and paste it
For a one-time need, copy this character and paste it where required:
¿
Copy and paste avoids changing input sources and is especially useful when a shortcut is intercepted by an app or remote environment.
What the character is—and how Spanish uses it
¿ is a distinct Unicode character, not a regular ? rotated by formatting. The ordinary question mark is U+003F; the inverted question mark is U+00BF. Spanish normally places the inverted mark at the beginning of a question and a regular mark at the end:
¿Cómo te llamas?
There is no uppercase version because it is punctuation.
Quick Recap
Quick troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Another symbol appears | The active layout is not U.S. ABC, or the physical keyboard differs from the selected source. | Check the Input menu, then inspect the Option and Shift layers in Keyboard Viewer. |
| A regular ? appears | Option was not held, or the wrong question-mark key was pressed. | Hold Option and Shift before pressing the key that produces ?. |
| The shortcut does nothing | The app, terminal, remote desktop, virtual machine, or keyboard utility is intercepting it. | Use Character Viewer or copy and paste ¿; try Unicode Hex Input in a normal text field. |
| The Input menu is missing | No additional input source is enabled or the menu indicator is hidden. | Go to System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit, add an input source, and enable the Input menu. |
| You need the original layout again | You switched to Spanish or Unicode Hex Input. | Choose the prior source from the Input menu, or use the documented input-source shortcuts. |
