Use Photo Shuffle, the iPhone’s built-in wallpaper feature, to rotate a handpicked set of photos or artwork on your Lock Screen. Go to Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photo Shuffle, choose images, then set them to change On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily. This is a rotating set of still wallpapers—not a continuous slideshow that advances every few seconds.
Choose the images before you set up Photo Shuffle
For the quickest setup, put the pictures you want in an album in Photos. An album works well for a large theme, such as travel, family, or a collection of art. Review it first: anything in the selected collection could appear on your Lock Screen, including an image you would rather keep private or one that crops badly.
If you want a smaller, carefully edited gallery, select photos individually instead. This is usually the better choice for artwork, where you may want to control the exact images and avoid unrelated pictures.

When choosing images, look for portrait-oriented pictures or compositions with room around the subject. The iPhone Lock Screen also displays the time, date, widgets, and notifications, so artwork with important details near the top may be obscured. Apple’s Photo Shuffle instructions cover album, category, featured-photo, and manual selection options.

Set up a rotating Lock Screen from an album
- Open Settings and tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper, then choose Photo Shuffle.
- Choose an available category, such as People, Nature, or Cities, or select an existing album. You can also use Featured Photos.
- Choose when the wallpaper should change: On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily.
- Tap Use Album or Use Featured Photos, as applicable, to preview the wallpaper.
- Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the matching setup for the Home Screen, or tap Customize Home Screen to choose a different Home Screen appearance.
The exact finishing control depends on how you selected your images. Follow the option shown on screen.
Make a more curated gallery with manual selection
- Go to Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photo Shuffle.
- Choose Select Photos Manually.
- Tap each photo you want to include, then tap the checkmark to confirm.
- Set the shuffle frequency. If needed, use the ellipsis menu in the preview to adjust it.
- Tap Add, then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
Manual selection takes longer, but it gives you a tightly edited collection—useful when every image should fit the same mood or when you do not want other pictures from a larger album to appear. If precise control matters, this is safer than relying on a category or featured-photo selection.
Choose how often the gallery changes
| Setting | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| On Tap | An interactive gallery: request another image when you want one. |
| On Lock | More automatic variety tied to locking the iPhone. Apple labels this option “On Lock”; do not assume it changes on every screen wake or unlock. |
| Hourly | A balance between seeing new images and keeping a picture for a while. |
| Daily | A slower, more predictable rotation, such as one featured artwork for the day. |
If the gallery feels too restless, switch to Hourly or Daily. If you want to choose each change yourself, use On Tap. Photo Shuffle does not offer a rapid, hands-free slideshow mode.

Adjust the crop and keep the artwork visible
After choosing your images, inspect the Lock Screen preview rather than assuming every photo will fit. Drag a photo to reposition it and use the available gestures to adjust its framing. Try the offered styles or filters, then check how the time and widgets sit over the image. Apple’s custom Lock Screen guide explains photo positioning, styles, widgets, and related controls.
- Keep faces, artwork titles, and other important details clear of the clock and widget area.
- Use images with enough contrast for the time and notification text to remain readable.
- If the Lock Screen image is the focus, keep the Home Screen simpler or customize it separately.
- Check how the image looks with notifications present; their placement and volume can change what remains visible.
On iOS 26, the Lock Screen time can adapt its position around the photo and notifications. That can help with composition, but it does not guarantee that every image will work perfectly. See Apple’s iOS 26 overview for the current Lock Screen changes.
Optional: try the spatial photo effect
On iOS 26, some eligible photos can use a spatial, 3D-style scene effect on the Lock Screen. Apple documents this for iPhone 12 or later; not every picture qualifies. Image characteristics such as lighting, subject-background separation, and orientation affect eligibility. This effect adds visual depth to a compatible photo; it does not replace Photo Shuffle’s job of rotating between images. Details and limitations are in Apple’s wallpaper guide.

Keep separate galleries for different parts of your day
You do not have to put every theme into one large shuffle collection. Create separate Lock Screens for work, travel, family, or seasonal art, then link a Lock Screen to a Focus. When you activate the associated Focus, its linked Lock Screen appears. Apple explains wallpaper and Focus linking in its custom Lock Screen guide.
This arrangement is useful when the images, widgets, or overall mood you want at work differ from what you want at home. It also keeps each Photo Shuffle set more intentional.
Switch, edit, or remove a gallery
To browse saved Lock Screens, touch and hold the Lock Screen. Authenticate with Face ID or your passcode if prompted, then swipe left or right to find a configuration and tap it. To change one, select it and tap Customize. You can also open Settings → Wallpaper and select the wallpaper configuration you want to edit.

If Face ID does not open the wallpaper gallery, try touching and holding the Lock Screen again and enter your passcode. To remove an unwanted saved wallpaper, open the gallery, swipe up on that wallpaper, and tap the trash icon. Apple documents these controls on its Change your iPhone wallpaper page.
If you want a different album or a wholly different selection, edit the Photo Shuffle configuration or create a new one. Do not assume that changing a source album will automatically update every existing shuffle setup.
Troubleshooting Photo Shuffle
Photo Shuffle is missing
Check that you are adding a Lock Screen wallpaper at Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper, rather than editing only the Home Screen. Menu labels and availability can differ across iOS versions and devices; update iOS where practical, then look for Photo Shuffle in the wallpaper options.

The wrong photos appear, or some are missing
Check whether you chose an album, category, or featured-photo selection rather than manually selecting the exact pictures. The selection methods are not interchangeable. For a precisely controlled set, create or review an album—or choose Select Photos Manually and confirm the intended photos.
The image is cropped badly
Reposition or resize it in the Lock Screen preview. If key details still fall behind the clock or off the edge, use a more crop-friendly image or prepare a portrait crop before adding it. Artwork with essential text near the borders is especially likely to lose detail on a tall screen.
The pictures change too often—or not often enough
Edit the shuffle frequency. Choose Hourly or Daily for a slower rotation, or On Lock if you prefer an automatic cadence tied to locking the device. Choose On Tap when you want to control when you see another image. None of these settings turns Photo Shuffle into a continuously advancing slideshow.

Remove or reduce Lock Screen widgets, choose images with clearer space around the subject, and consider a simpler Home Screen. The clock, notifications, and widgets share the display with the wallpaper, so composition is part of the setup—not an afterthought.
