On iPhone 17 and iPhone 16, screen rotation is controlled in Control Center. To let supported apps switch between portrait and landscape, turn off Portrait Orientation Lock (also called Lock Rotation). To stop automatic rotation, turn that lock on.
Turn screen rotation on
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
- Tap the padlock surrounded by a circular arrow—the Portrait Orientation Lock or Lock Rotation button—to turn it off.
- Close Control Center.
- Turn your iPhone sideways in an app that supports landscape mode.
When the lock is off, supported apps can change orientation automatically. Apple’s instructions are available in its screen-rotation support guide.
Turn screen rotation off
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the Portrait Orientation Lock / Lock Rotation button so it becomes active.
- Close Control Center.
The iPhone will then keep supported content from changing orientation when you turn the device. The same control is used for both actions: lock active means rotation is prevented; lock inactive means supported apps may rotate.

Open Control Center and find the padlock-and-circular-arrow icon. If the control is highlighted or otherwise shown as active, Portrait Orientation Lock is on. Tap it once to unlock rotation.

The exact appearance, including colors, can vary with the iOS interface. Some iPhones may also show a rotation-lock indicator in the status bar. Apple uses both “Portrait Orientation Lock” and “Lock Rotation” in its support materials, so either name refers to the same control.
If your iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 still will not rotate
1. Check the lock again
Open Control Center and make sure the rotation-lock button is inactive. Close Control Center before testing, then turn the phone sideways.

2. Test a landscape-compatible app
Rotation is not supported by every app. Test the feature in Safari or Calculator, which Apple identifies as examples of apps that can work in landscape mode.

You cannot force every app to support landscape orientation.

3. Do not use the Home Screen as the only test
Apple’s guidance focuses on apps that support landscape mode rather than guaranteeing that every system screen will rotate. Use a compatible app for a reliable check.
4. Restart the iPhone
If rotation fails in supported apps even after you have unlocked it, restart the iPhone and test again. Apple recommends restarting when the problem continues.

If rotation still does not work across supported apps after a restart, contact Apple Support for further troubleshooting.

First, swipe down from the top-right and look through the available Control Center controls. Depending on your iOS 26 layout and customization, the control may be in another section or need to be added through Control Center customization.

There is no normal Settings > Display & Brightness switch for automatic screen rotation. The built-in rotation control is accessed through Control Center. Apple’s current iPhone User Guide explains the Control Center framework and available controls.
Does the process differ between iPhone 16 and iPhone 17?
No. Both models use the same top-right swipe to open Control Center and the same Portrait Orientation Lock / Lock Rotation control. Neither model requires a separate Action button or hardware-button procedure.
Apple’s current iOS 26 iPhone User Guide covers iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 within the same software instructions. Apple also provides a dedicated iPhone 17 User Guide.
