On a Lenovo Yoga with a backlit keyboard, press Fn + Spacebar repeatedly to cycle through the available lighting modes. First check for a keyboard-and-light icon on the Spacebar or Esc: Yoga models and configurations differ, and not every one includes a backlit keyboard. Lenovo’s general guidance identifies those keys as common places for the icon.
Turn on the Lenovo Yoga keyboard light

Wake the laptop and look for a keyboard-backlight icon, usually on the Spacebar. On some models it is on Esc.

Hold Fn and press Spacebar (or the key marked with the backlight icon if your model uses a different key). Recent Yoga 7/7i user-guide material specifies Fn + Space for the keyboard backlight.

Press the shortcut again to cycle through the available settings. A common sequence is low, high, then off, but the number and order of modes vary by model. Lenovo’s support video shows that typical sequence; Lenovo also notes that some keyboards have two modes while others have three.

Check whether your Yoga has a backlit keyboard
Inspect the Spacebar and Esc for an icon resembling a keyboard with light rays. If neither key has one, Lenovo says the computer generally does not have keyboard-backlight hardware. Because options vary by exact configuration, confirm using your machine’s model or machine type in Lenovo Support and check its user guide or specifications. The Yoga family name alone does not establish that the feature is included.
Windows settings, a keyboard driver, or Lenovo Vantage cannot add LEDs to a keyboard that was built without them. If you are considering a replacement keyboard, verify compatibility with the exact machine type first; a different keyboard may not be a straightforward upgrade.
What the keyboard-light modes mean
- Off: The keyboard is not illuminated.
- Low or dim: A lower brightness setting for darker conditions.
- High or bright: A brighter setting, when the model offers one.
- Auto: Available on some models only. Lenovo documents Low, High, Off, and Auto for certain Yoga Slim 9i models; in Auto, the light can turn on when you start typing or use the touchpad. See Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 9i guidance.
Not every backlit Yoga offers all these modes or adjustable brightness. If repeated presses seem to skip a setting, that may simply reflect the options on your model.

If Fn + Spacebar does nothing
Work through these checks in order. Stop once the light responds.

Hold Fn explicitly. Press and hold Fn, then tap Spacebar. Pressing Spacebar alone is not the usual shortcut.

Use the key with the icon. If the backlight symbol is on Esc rather than Spacebar, try the combination indicated for that keyboard. Lenovo’s general instructions refer to Fn with Spacebar or Esc, depending on the model.

Check Fn Lock. On supported keyboards, Fn + Esc toggles Fn Lock, which changes whether top-row hotkeys work by themselves or require Fn. After toggling it, try the backlight shortcut again. Fn Lock behavior depends on the keyboard layout; it does not by itself prove that the backlight is disabled. The Yoga 7/7i guide describes Fn Lock.

Try Lenovo Vantage. Look for a keyboard-backlight control under Device Settings, Input, Input & Accessories, or a similarly named section. Menu names and availability vary. The shortcut is usually the quickest control when it works.

Test outside Windows. Lenovo recommends testing Fn + Space in the firmware setup utility on supported models. If the light works there but not in Windows, the issue may involve Windows, firmware, or drivers rather than the backlight hardware.

Install model-appropriate updates. In Lenovo Vantage, open System Update and check for applicable BIOS, firmware, and driver updates. Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 9 Gen 10 troubleshooting guidance recommends a firmware test and updates when the light works in firmware but not Windows. Do not assume a BIOS update will fix every case.

Check the keyboard in Device Manager. Search Windows for Device Manager, expand Keyboards, open the relevant device, and check its status. If needed, use its Driver options to update or uninstall the device, then run Windows Update and restart. Lenovo includes these steps in its model troubleshooting guidance; this is a later check, not a prerequisite for using a working physical shortcut.

Use Lenovo Vantage to adjust the light
Some supported models expose a brightness control in Lenovo Vantage. Depending on the model and app version, look under paths such as Device Settings → Input & Accessories → Keyboard backlight, or Menu → Input → Keyboard backlight brightness. Lenovo’s Vantage guidance and Yoga Slim 9i instructions show different paths, and Lenovo notes that the interface can change. If the option is absent, use the keyboard shortcut and check the exact model’s guide rather than assuming every Yoga has a Vantage control.

If the keyboard light turns off by itself
First cycle the shortcut again: the light may have been switched to Off, or the model may use an automatic mode. If it still goes dark after a short idle period, check the user guide and Lenovo support information for the exact model. Timeout behavior and firmware settings are not universal across Yoga laptops.
Model-specific example: Yoga C940-14IIL
Lenovo documented a 15-second inactivity timeout on the Yoga C940-14IIL with BIOS versions earlier than version 57. Its documented fix was to update the BIOS and enable KB Backlight Ctrl in BIOS Configuration. This setting and fix apply to that specific model issue, not to Yoga laptops generally. Keyboard backlight is not Windows Night light
Windows Night light changes the display’s color temperature; it does not illuminate the keyboard. Screen brightness, adaptive display brightness, touchscreen illumination, and power or charging indicators are also separate from the keyboard backlight. On Yoga laptops, keyboard lighting is generally controlled by the physical shortcut, firmware, and—on models that support it—Lenovo software.

If the backlight icon is present but the shortcut still fails after checking Fn behavior, Vantage, and model-appropriate updates, use Lenovo Support for the exact machine type or contact a qualified repair provider. A firmware or driver check can help distinguish a Windows-side problem from a hardware fault; avoid buying a generic replacement keyboard without confirming that it fits and is supported by your particular Yoga.
