There is no universal power-button substitute, but many computers can be started another way. If a desktop’s case switch has failed, briefly bridge the motherboard’s correctly identified PWR_SW pins. If the computer is asleep, a keyboard, mouse, laptop lid, dock, or network signal may wake it. Fully shut-down laptops and proprietary desktops usually require a model-specific firmware setting or hardware repair.
First, determine whether the computer is asleep or off
This determines which method can work. A sleeping computer is still running in a low-power state and may respond to normal wake signals. A fully shut-down computer needs firmware or hardware support to start without its button.
Signs the computer may be sleeping
- Keyboard, charging, or status lights remain on.
- Network-link lights are active.
- Fans briefly react when you press a key or move a mouse.
- The laptop’s charging indicator remains lit.
- The display returns after keyboard or mouse input.
These are clues, not proof: a shut-down computer can retain standby power and show LEDs. Try a wired keyboard or mouse first. Microsoft notes that supported Windows PCs may wake from sleep using a keyboard, mouse, or laptop lid, but support varies by hardware (Microsoft Support).
The quickest fix for a desktop: bridge the motherboard power pins
A desktop case button is normally just a momentary switch. Briefly touching the motherboard’s two power-switch pins simulates pressing it and uses the computer’s normal power circuitry.

Before you begin
- Use this only on a conventional desktop with an accessible motherboard.
- Confirm that the 24-pin motherboard connector and 4- or 8-pin CPU power connector are attached.
- Have the motherboard manual available. Front-panel pin layouts differ by model.
- Do not work inside the case if you are uncomfortable identifying headers.
Steps
- Set the PSU switch to
Oand unplug the AC cable before removing the case panel or moving connectors. - Find the front-panel header. It may be labeled
F_PANEL,JFP1,PANEL1, orFP1. - Use the manual to identify the two pins labeled
PWR_SW,PWRBTN,POWER SW, or equivalent. Never rely on a generic pin number or diagram. - Reconnect AC power and set the PSU switch to
I. - If the case power-switch plug is connected, remove it from those two pins.
- Touch both correct power-switch pins at the same time with the metal tip of a screwdriver for about one second.
- Remove the screwdriver immediately when the system starts.
Intel and MSI both document briefly bridging the correct power-switch pins as a desktop troubleshooting method (Intel; MSI).
Safety warnings
- Do not guess the pins.
- Do not bridge the 24-pin connector, CPU power connector, USB header, fan header, or CMOS-clear header.
- Do not drag the screwdriver across neighboring pins.
- Disconnect AC power before moving cables or components.
- Follow your board’s manual because front-panel assignments vary; Gigabyte also directs users to the specific motherboard documentation (Gigabyte guide).
If the PC starts this way, the motherboard and PSU are at least responding to the start signal. The likely fault is the case button, its cable, or its connection.
Other ways to start a desktop
Use an onboard motherboard power button
Some enthusiast and testing motherboards have a physical button labeled POWER, START, or ONBOARD POWER. With AC connected and the PSU switched on, press it once. MSI describes these buttons as useful for testing a system outside its case (MSI motherboard guide). Many office desktops and prebuilt systems do not include one.

If the case has a separate, working reset button, you can temporarily connect it to the motherboard’s power-switch pins:

- Shut down the computer, switch off the PSU, and unplug AC power.
- Move the
RESET SWconnector from the reset pins to thePWR_SWpins. - Reconnect power and press the case’s reset button once.
This works because both are momentary switches. It is intended as a temporary workaround for a standard desktop case, not for laptops, all-in-ones, proprietary mini PCs, or custom front-panel boards. Replace the failed switch or use a compatible two-wire, normally-open momentary power switch as the permanent fix.
How to start a laptop without its power button
Do not short pins on a laptop motherboard. Laptop power buttons may be integrated into the keyboard, palm rest, a small daughterboard, or the embedded controller. Use only features documented for the exact model.
Open the lid
Some laptops can power on from a complete shutdown when the lid opens. In BIOS/UEFI, look under Power Management or Advanced settings for Power On Lid Open, Lid Open Power On, or Panel Open Power On. The usual process is:

- Connect the charger if required by the model.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI using the manufacturer’s setup key, commonly
F2,Delete,Esc, orF10. - Enable the lid-open power option, save, shut down, and test by opening the lid.
Dell documents Power On Lid Open for supported systems (Dell manual), and HP documents Power On When Lid is Open for supported notebooks (HP Support). The option may be absent, AC-dependent, or limited to sleep.

Try a keyboard, mouse, or dock
USB wake commonly resumes a sleeping computer, but cold power-on is model-specific. In Windows, open Device Manager, expand Keyboards or Mice and other pointing devices, open the device’s Properties, select Power Management, and enable Allow this device to wake the computer when available.
Check BIOS/UEFI for settings such as USB Wake Support, Power On by Keyboard, Power On by USB, or Wake from S3/S4/S5. Bluetooth keyboards and wireless receivers cannot be relied on for cold power-on unless the specific firmware supports it. A dock must also be powered and explicitly supported by the laptop; Dell lists dock wake as a separate model-specific feature (Dell manual).
Check for model-specific service procedures
Some laptops have an emergency-reset pinhole, battery-disconnect hole, internal power-button board, or keyboard power connector. An emergency-reset hole usually cuts battery power or resets the embedded controller; it should not automatically be treated as a power button. Search the exact model’s official service manual before inserting anything into an unidentified opening.

Wake-on-LAN (WoL) sends a network “magic packet” to the computer’s network adapter. It may wake a sleeping system and, on some hardware, power on from an off state.

Requirements
- WoL support in the motherboard, network adapter, and firmware.
- WoL enabled in BIOS/UEFI.
- Operating-system network-adapter settings configured.
- AC power connected; some systems require it explicitly.
- A network connection that remains powered. Wired Ethernet is generally the most dependable.
- Another device or utility capable of sending the packet.
Windows setup outline
- Enable
Wake on LANorPower On by LANin BIOS/UEFI. - In Windows, open Device Manager and open the Ethernet adapter’s Properties.
- Under Power Management, allow the adapter to wake the computer.
- Under Advanced, look for
Wake on Magic Packet,Wake From Shutdown,Shutdown Wake-On-Lan, orEnable PME. - Record the computer’s MAC address and send a magic packet from the local network.
WoL can fail when the computer uses Wi-Fi-only hardware, a USB Ethernet adapter that loses power, deep-sleep or ErP settings, Windows Fast Startup, router isolation, VLANs, a powered-off switch, or an unplugged cable. Dell documents WoL from an off state on supported systems and notes the AC-power requirement (Dell manual). It is not a universal solution.

Desktop firmware may offer AC Recovery, Restore on AC Loss, After Power Failure, Wake on AC, or Automatic Power On. In BIOS/UEFI, set the option to Power On or, where appropriate, Last State. Some systems also offer Auto On Time for scheduled startup. Dell documents these options on supported desktops (Dell manual).
This must normally be configured before the button fails. A smart plug can restore AC remotely, but it cannot command a PC to boot unless AC-recovery behavior is already enabled. Abruptly removing power is not a substitute for graceful shutdown and can cause data loss.
Mac-specific automatic startup
Apple documents automatic startup from connected power for Mac mini models introduced in 2024 or later, Mac Studio models introduced in 2025 or later, and iMac models introduced in 2024 or later, running macOS Tahoe 26.5 or later.

- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Energy.
- Set Start up when power is connected to Always.
- Shut down, then disconnect and reconnect the power source.
Apple also says the Mac can start when power is restored after an outage. If it remains connected after shutdown, wait about 30 seconds between disconnecting and reconnecting so the power supply can discharge (Apple Support). This is not a universal method for MacBook models or older Mac desktops.
If none of these methods work
If bridging the correct desktop pins produces no response, the power button may not be the real fault. Check:
- AC outlet, power cable, and surge protector.
- PSU switch position:
Imeans on. - Motherboard standby LED, if present.
- 24-pin motherboard and 4- or 8-pin CPU power connectors.
- PSU failure, motherboard failure, a damaged laptop power board, or an embedded-controller fault.
- Loose RAM, a short, or another hardware problem preventing startup.
Intel recommends checking power connections, the case switch, motherboard controls, and possible electrical shorts when a computer will not start (Intel troubleshooting guide). If the computer is a laptop, all-in-one, proprietary desktop, or inaccessible system, arrange repair rather than probing unknown contacts.

- Configure Wake-on-LAN while you can still access firmware settings.
- Enable lid-open power-on on supported laptops.
- For a custom desktop, keep a compatible two-wire momentary switch available.
- Test any remote-start method before relying on it.
