To stop mobile internet on an iPhone 17 or iPhone 16, open Settings → Cellular and switch off Cellular Data. In some regions, the same settings may be called Mobile Data or Mobile Service. The steps are the same on iPhone 16 and 17 models, including Pro, Pro Max, and Plus; available options can vary by carrier, region, and SIM setup.
Turn off all cellular data
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data or Mobile Service).
- Turn off Cellular Data.
With the switch off, apps cannot use the mobile network for internet data. They can still connect over Wi-Fi, so this does not make the iPhone completely offline. It also is not the same as turning off a SIM/eSIM line or enabling Airplane Mode.
Turning off cellular data does not, by itself, disable the cellular line. Voice calls and carrier SMS are separate services, but whether they work depends on your carrier, network conditions, and line settings. Do not assume this switch prevents every possible carrier charge: calls, messages, and carrier-specific services may be billed separately.

- Go to Settings → Cellular.
- Scroll to the app list.
- Turn off the switch beside the app you want to restrict.
That app can use Wi-Fi for data but not cellular data. This is useful for limiting a video, streaming, social, or cloud-backup app while leaving mobile data available to other apps. System Services appear separately; Apple does not provide a switch to disable cellular access for each individual system service.

For Dual SIM or Dual eSIM: check which line uses data
If two lines are active, go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and select the line you want to use for mobile internet. If your goal is to stop data on the phone altogether, switch off the main Cellular Data control. If you only want to control a particular line, review that line’s settings as well.
Allow Cellular Data Switching determines whether the iPhone may use either line for data in certain circumstances. Turn it off if you do not want the phone to switch between lines for data, but note that dual-line behavior can also depend on calls, Wi-Fi Calling, carrier support, and network conditions. Personal Hotspot uses the line selected for cellular data.

Choose the right setting for your goal
| Goal | Setting |

| Stop mobile internet use entirely | Turn off Cellular Data. |
| Stop one app using mobile data | Turn off that app in the Cellular app list. |
| Avoid data use while roaming, but keep domestic data | Open Cellular Data Options for the relevant line and turn off Data Roaming. |
| Keep cellular data but avoid 5G | Open Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data and choose LTE, if offered. |
| Reduce background and automatic data use | Open Cellular Data Options → Data Mode and choose Low Data Mode, if offered. |
| Disable a phone number or SIM/eSIM line | Turn off that line in its cellular settings; this is broader than turning off data. |
Stop roaming data
For the line you want to manage, open Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options and turn off Data Roaming. With multiple lines, select the relevant line first if needed. This is different from turning off all cellular data: roaming data is restricted, while domestic mobile data can remain available. Carrier plans and roaming rules vary.

Turn off 5G without turning off data
Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data and choose LTE if it appears. This keeps cellular data on while avoiding 5G. The available choices depend on the iPhone, carrier, plan, and region.

Reduce data use with Low Data Mode
If you still need mobile internet, use Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Data Mode → Low Data Mode, when available. This is an alternative to disabling data entirely and is intended to reduce background activity and automatic data use.
What still works with Cellular Data off?
- Wi-Fi internet: Apps and services can still go online whenever the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Calls and carrier SMS: These are not automatically disabled by the data switch, although service depends on the active line, carrier, and network.
- Internet-dependent apps: They need Wi-Fi if cellular data is off; otherwise they may not update or connect.
- Personal Hotspot: It cannot provide an internet connection through cellular data while that data is off.
Airplane Mode is a broader control that affects cellular connectivity and other radios; it is not a substitute for the more specific Cellular Data switch if you want to keep normal cellular service available.

Turn cellular data back on
Open Settings → Cellular and turn Cellular Data back on. On a phone with multiple lines, check Cellular Data and confirm the intended line is selected.
If you cannot find the setting or data still seems available
- Look for a regional label: Search Settings for “Cellular,” “Mobile Data,” or “Mobile Service.” The wording varies by region and language.
- Check the switch itself: A cellular status icon can indicate network availability; it does not prove that apps are transferring data. Confirm that the Cellular Data switch is off.
- Check Wi-Fi: If an app still reaches the internet, the iPhone may be using Wi-Fi rather than cellular data.
- For multiple lines: Review the selected data line and Allow Cellular Data Switching.
- If cellular controls are missing: Confirm a SIM/eSIM line is set up, restart the iPhone, and check with your carrier. Cellular service and options depend on the device, carrier, region, and active SIM/eSIM.
- If you see SOS, No Service, or Searching: That points to a cellular service issue, not simply a disabled data switch. Follow Apple’s SOS, No Service, or Searching troubleshooting and contact your carrier if the problem continues.
To review past usage by app and system service, open Settings → Cellular and inspect the usage figures. Those figures help identify data-heavy apps, but your carrier’s records may be more accurate for billing-period totals.
