On current macOS (including macOS Tahoe 26), open Apple menu  > System Settings > Keyboard. Under Text Input, click Edit, turn off Capitalize words automatically, then click Done. The change affects new typing in apps that support macOS text services; it does not rewrite text already in a document.

Apple’s current typing controls are documented in its Mac typing settings guide.

Turn off automatic capitalization in current macOS

  1. Click the Apple menu  in the top-left corner.
  2. Choose System Settings.
  3. Select Keyboard in the sidebar. Scroll if needed.
  4. In the Text Input area, click Edit.
  5. Clear Capitalize words automatically.
  6. Click Done.

Test the result by typing a new sentence in TextEdit or another standard text editor. This preference normally controls capitalization after sentence-ending punctuation and supported proper nouns, rather than changing every uppercase character to lowercase. Apple describes the control and its scope in its Keyboard settings documentation.

Choose the fix that matches what you see

Symptom Setting or check What it controls
First words of sentences become uppercase Capitalize words automatically Automatic sentence-start and supported proper-noun capitalization
Words are changed because macOS considers them misspelled Correct spelling automatically Spelling corrections, not capitalization
Gray completions appear while you type Show inline predictive text Inline predictions; availability varies by language
A particular abbreviation or string is replaced Text Replacements Custom substitutions for typed text
Only one application keeps capitalizing That app’s Auto-Correction or text settings Application-specific behavior or an editor that does not use the shared macOS setting
Every letter is uppercase Caps Lock and keyboard settings Intentional uppercase input, not automatic capitalization

If capitalization continues in only one app

The macOS preference applies only where the application supports the relevant text service. Some editors have their own controls, so changing the global setting may not affect them.

Stop spelling changes

Turn off Correct spelling automatically, then click Done. In many individual macOS apps, you can instead use Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Correct Spelling Automatically; the command is off when it has no checkmark. Apple lists these controls in its typing suggestions guide.

Remove gray inline suggestions

Turn off Show inline predictive text. Apple notes that inline predictions are not available in every language.

Automatic capitalization is not Caps Lock

Capitalize words automatically does not disable deliberate uppercase typing. If all letters appear in capitals, press Caps Lock once and check whether an external keyboard has a stuck key. The preference only governs automatic text-service corrections during supported typing.

What happens to text you already entered?

Turning off the preference is a forward-looking change: it affects text you type afterward. It is not a bulk lowercase or reformatting command for existing documents. Select existing text and use that application’s case-formatting tools instead. Pages and Keynote, for example, provide options such as lowercase, uppercase, title case, or no capitalization through their text-formatting controls.

Troubleshoot a setting that appears not to work

  1. Quit and reopen the affected app. This refreshes an editor that may have cached its text settings.
  2. Test another supported editor. If capitalization stops in TextEdit but not one app, investigate that app’s preferences or support for macOS text services.
  3. Confirm the exact checkbox. Turning off spelling correction does not turn off capitalization.
  4. Check Text Replacements. A replacement can insert an uppercase form even when automatic capitalization is disabled.
  5. Check Caps Lock. This explains text that is uppercase throughout, not just at sentence starts.
  6. Review the input source and language. Capitalization and prediction features can vary by language, and Apple says some typing features are unavailable in all languages.
  7. Check accessibility typing settings if you use the Accessibility Keyboard. It has a separate Capitalize sentences automatically option, documented by Apple at Accessibility Keyboard settings.

A workplace or school administrator may also restrict System Settings, and a managed app may impose its own editor rules. If the checkbox is unavailable or immediately reappears, contact the administrator or app publisher.

Older macOS versions

The labels and location differ by release. Older versions commonly used System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, while current releases use System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit. Do not use the legacy path as if it were the current macOS interface. Apple’s older Pages documentation shows the version-dependent Keyboard preferences > Text location at this legacy reference.

If you cannot find the checkbox, first verify your macOS version and look inside the Keyboard pane’s text-input editor. The application may also have its own capitalization preference.
