iOS 18 does not have a built-in button that turns a GIF directly into a Live Sticker. First convert the GIF into an Apple Live Photo, then create a Live Sticker from that Live Photo in Photos or Messages. The workflow is GIF → Live Photo → Live Sticker.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad that supports the relevant Photos and Messages features and runs iOS 18 or iPadOS 18.
- The GIF you want to use.
- GIPHY or another app that can export a GIF as a Live Photo. Menu names and account requirements can vary by app version.
Apple’s sticker creator makes a static sticker from a photo and a moving Live Sticker from a Live Photo. Its instructions do not describe selecting an ordinary GIF as the source for an animated sticker. See Apple’s guide to creating stickers from photos.
1. Convert the GIF to a Live Photo
One reported workaround uses GIPHY’s Convert to Live Photo command. The precise labels or availability may change with app updates.
- Open GIPHY and find the GIF, or import your own if the current app version offers that option.
- Open the GIF’s actions menu, often shown as a three-dot button.
- Tap Convert to Live Photo.
- Choose an export option:
- Full Screen enlarges the image to fill the display area and may crop the edges. Choose it when the subject is centered and a larger result matters more than preserving every edge.
- Fit to Screen preserves more of the original frame. It is the safer choice if the subject is near an edge or cropping could remove important details.
- Save the result to Photos.
The GIPHY conversion steps and export choices are documented in this third-party walkthrough; they are not Apple system settings. GIPHY’s import options and sign-in requirements can change. If you use a different converter, confirm that it creates a Live Photo rather than saving a GIF or still image.

2. Create a Live Sticker in Photos
- Open Photos and find the newly saved Live Photo.
- Open it, then touch and hold the subject. If needed, slide the subject upward until it separates from the image, then release.
- Tap Add Sticker.
- Optionally tap Add Effect to apply an effect such as Outline, Comic, or Puffy.
The sticker is made by extracting a subject from the image, not by turning every frame into a full rectangular GIF sticker. Apple documents this method for Live Photos in its iPhone sticker instructions.
Or create it from Messages
If the Live Photo is already in Photos, you can start from the sticker drawer instead:

- Open a conversation in Messages.
- Tap + beside the text field, then tap Stickers.
- Open Live Stickers and tap +.
- Select the Live Photo and tap Add.
- Apply an effect if you want, then tap Done.
Apple’s Messages guide specifies using a Live Photo when you want the sticker to move.

- In Messages, open a conversation and tap +.
- Tap Stickers, then the Live Stickers icon.
- Choose your sticker and tap Send.
You can also drag a sticker onto an existing message bubble. Created stickers are available in supported system sticker locations, including the keyboard sticker drawer and Markup. Apple says stickers sync through iCloud across devices signed into the same Apple Account. The exact placement of controls can differ on iPad because its Messages and Photos layouts are wider.

What to expect on iPad and in other apps
The iPadOS workflow is the same in principle: export the GIF as a Live Photo, create a sticker from it in Photos or Messages, and select it from the Live Stickers drawer. The + button and sticker controls may appear in different places than on iPhone.
Messages and Apple’s supported sticker locations are the most reliable places to use the result. Other messaging apps may not preserve Apple’s animated Live Sticker behavior; they could show a static image, reject it, or convert it to their own sticker format. Do not assume the sticker will remain animated everywhere.

Troubleshooting
There is no “Add Sticker” option
Check that the item in Photos is a Live Photo, not the original GIF or a single-frame image. If it is still a GIF, return to the converter and export it as a Live Photo. Then open that saved Live Photo and try the subject-selection gesture again.
The sticker is static
First open the source in Photos and confirm it actually moves as a Live Photo. If it does not, the converter may have saved a still frame, or you may have selected a preview rather than the Live Photo when creating the sticker. Re-export and recreate the sticker from the Live Photo. A recipient’s device or messaging app may also lack support for the animated sticker behavior. Apple lists iOS 17.2, iPadOS 17.2, macOS 14.1, watchOS 10.2, and visionOS 1 as minimum software versions for the relevant sticker updates; see its compatibility guidance.

The subject cutout looks wrong
Live Stickers depend on separating a subject from its background. Busy backgrounds, overlapping people or objects, motion blur, changing scenes, and subjects that move out of frame can produce poor results. Try the other export mode, use a cleaner or cropped version of the GIF, or use a converter with frame editing or background-removal tools. If the cutout still fails, make a static sticker from a clear frame instead.
The sticker is missing from the drawer
Look under Messages → + → Stickers → Live Stickers or in the keyboard’s sticker drawer. Make sure the sticker was added before closing Photos or Messages, and check that the device is signed into the intended Apple Account if you expect it to sync through iCloud.
Alternatives to GIPHY
Another GIF-to-Live-Photo converter may work, but check its output format before relying on it: an app that exports only GIFs or still images will not provide the Live Photo Apple’s animated-sticker workflow requires. A dedicated converter can be useful if you need trimming, frame selection, or background removal; some apps have subscriptions or in-app purchases. For example, Sticker Live’s App Store listing describes GIF, video, and photo conversion features. Features, privacy practices, and prices vary, so check the current listing before installing. If you only need a nonanimated sticker, use a representative still frame and create a regular photo sticker instead.
A normal GIF can also simply be sent as a GIF when you do not need it in Apple’s Live Stickers drawer. The key distinction is that saving a GIF to Photos alone does not make it a Live Photo.
