To turn a screenshot into a URL, upload the image to a hosting service, choose its access setting, then copy the link it provides. Use a direct image URL when another website needs the image file itself; use a share-page URL when people should view or download the file through a service such as Google Drive or Google Photos. A screenshot saved only on your computer or phone does not have a public URL.
Choose the kind of URL you need
Before uploading, decide what should happen when someone opens the link. The wrong link type is the most common reason an apparently valid screenshot URL fails.

Some destinations accept only an image resource. If an <img> tag displays a broken image, or an API rejects the address, you may have copied a page URL instead of the underlying file URL.
Method 1: Create a direct image URL with Imgur
Imgur’s help documentation describes uploaded content as locatable with a direct URL. This is the most straightforward route when you need the image itself.

- Open Imgur’s upload page in a desktop browser or its mobile app.
- Select the screenshot from your device. The upload flow supports choosing a local file; app instructions differ slightly by platform.
- Wait for the upload to finish. Keep the original file until you have tested the result.
- Copy the correct address. On desktop, open the image, right-click it, and choose the browser’s Copy image address command. In a mobile browser, use the content menu’s Copy link; in the app, long-press the image and copy its link.
- Test the address. Paste it into a private or signed-out browser window. For an embed, paste it into the destination as well.
Imgur distinguishes Public and Hidden posts. A Hidden post can still be reached by anyone who has its direct URL, so “hidden” is not the same as password-protected. If you want account-side control and a way to request deletion, upload while signed in and retain the account details associated with the post.
Check that it is really a direct image
A direct image address normally opens the picture by itself, without Imgur navigation, comments, or an album interface. You can also inspect the address in your browser’s developer tools or use it in a minimal test:

Method 2: Make a share link with Google Drive
Drive is useful when the recipient should receive a managed file link instead of a raw image resource.

- Upload the screenshot to Google Drive.
- Right-click the file and choose Share.
- Under general access, choose Anyone with the link if people outside your organization must open it.
- Choose the role, normally Viewer.
- Select Copy link and send that address.
“Anyone with the link” means anyone who obtains the address can access the file at the selected permission level. Google also warns that the owner’s name and email are visible when a file is shared by link. Consider that disclosure before posting the URL publicly. Drive’s normal sharing address is a viewer page, not necessarily a direct image URL; use it where a managed file link is acceptable.
Method 3: Share from Google Photos
Google Photos can create a link for an individual photo or an album. This works well when the recipient should see a Photos page or a collection of screenshots.
- Open the screenshot in Google Photos.
- Choose Share, then select the option to create or copy a link.
- Send the copied address or place it in the destination that accepts a Photos viewing page.
Link access remains important after sharing. A shared album link can be passed on by other holders. Turning link sharing off and back on resets the album link. Removing one person from an album does not stop holders of the existing link while link sharing remains enabled.
Method 4: Use Dropbox’s screenshot capture
If you already use Dropbox for screenshots, its capture feature can be configured to copy a link or the image after a capture, depending on your settings. Check exactly what was copied before sending it: a Dropbox viewer link and a direct image resource are different outputs, and the destination may accept only one.

Set access deliberately
Uploading is only half the job. A URL is also an access decision.
- Public or unlisted: Anyone who obtains the link may be able to view it. Unlisted links are discoverable through possession, not authentication.
- Restricted: Recipients must sign in or be explicitly granted access. This is safer for confidential screenshots but less convenient for embeds.
- Revocable: Prefer a service that lets you disable sharing, change permissions, or reset a link when the screenshot should no longer be available.
- Identity exposure: Review whether the host displays your name, email address, profile, or organization.
Do not upload passwords, access tokens, private customer data, personal addresses, or other secrets merely to obtain a URL. Crop or redact sensitive content first.
Verify the URL before you publish it
- Open the link in a private window where you are not signed in.
- Try the exact application where it will be used: an HTML page, Markdown editor, issue tracker, chat app, or API field.
- Confirm that the image is the intended dimensions and format.
- Ask whether the destination needs a direct image response or permits a viewer page.
- Record how to revoke the link if the screenshot later becomes sensitive.
A link that works for you while signed in may fail for everyone else because your account session supplies permission.
Troubleshooting common failures
The link opens a page, not the image
You copied a share-page URL. Return to the host’s image view and use its direct-image or copy-image-address action. If the service does not provide a direct resource, use a host that does or change the destination to accept a viewer page.

Recipients see “Request access”
The file is restricted. Change general access to the intended audience, keep the Viewer role unless editing is required, and retest while signed out. Organization policies may prevent public links.
The image works for me but not in an embed
Your browser may be authenticated, or the host may block hotlinking. Test privately, inspect the response in the destination, and use a direct image URL intended for embedding.
The old Google Photos link still works
Turning off an individual person’s access does not invalidate an existing shared album link while link sharing remains on. Disable link sharing and enable it again to reset the album link.
The screenshot contains information I should not have shared
Remove or revoke the link immediately, delete the hosted copy if the service permits it, and create a redacted replacement. Remember that recipients may have downloaded or forwarded the original.
