To turn on a Fitbit Sense or Sense 2, press and hold the side button until the watch vibrates. To turn it off, open Settings → Shut down and confirm. A restart is different: hold the side button for about 10 seconds, until the Fitbit logo appears.
Turn on a Fitbit Sense or Sense 2
- Press and hold the physical button on the side of the watch.
- Release it when the watch vibrates or the Fitbit logo appears.
- Wait for the clock face to load.
This procedure applies to both Sense models. If the watch is already running and only its display is asleep, a brief button press or double-tap may wake the screen instead.
Turn off the watch
- Open the Settings app on the watch.
- Scroll to and tap Shut down.
- Confirm the shutdown if prompted, then wait until the screen goes completely dark.
The menu uses the label “Shut down.” Shutting down does not delete stored activity data, according to Google Health Help.

Choose between waking, shutting down, and restarting

Use a restart as a first troubleshooting step for a frozen display or controls, syncing trouble, missing notifications or activity data, or a reboot loop. Google says a normal restart does not delete activity data; it is not a factory reset. See Google’s restart instructions.

If the screen is dark but the watch may still be on
A blank display can simply mean the screen is asleep; it does not by itself mean the watch is powered off. Try a brief button press or double-tap. To change Screen Wake or open quick settings, start from the clock face:
- Fitbit Sense: Swipe right to open quick settings.
- Fitbit Sense 2: Swipe down to open quick settings.
Adjust Screen Wake there. These swipe directions differ by model, but the shutdown path is the same. Details are in Google’s Screen Wake and quick-settings guide.

Restart a frozen Fitbit Sense
- Connect the watch to its Fitbit charging cable.
- Press and hold the side button for about 10 seconds.
- Release the button when the Fitbit logo appears, then wait for the watch to restart.
This restart procedure is for Sense and Sense 2 and preserves activity data. Do not insert a paper clip or other object into holes in the watch: openings may contain sensors, and probing them can cause damage.
If the Fitbit Sense will not turn on or stays black
- Attach the correct magnetic charger to the charging contacts on the back of the watch. Sense chargers are model-specific; use a cable intended for your watch.
- For a black-screen recovery attempt, plug the charger into a standard wall outlet or safety-certified USB wall charger rather than relying on a computer port.
- Leave the watch charging for 60 minutes. If its battery is completely depleted, the screen may remain black for several minutes after charging begins.
- While it is still connected, hold the side button for about 10 seconds and release it when the Fitbit logo appears.
- If there is still no response, check that the charger is securely attached. Inspect the watch contacts and charger pins; clean away sweat, lotion, or debris, and check that no charger pin is stuck.
When the magnetic cable is attached correctly, the charge percentage should appear on the display; while charging, a button press or double-tap can wake it. If the watch remains unresponsive after the charging and restart steps, use Google’s black-screen and charging troubleshooting guidance for further help. Do not try to charge with visibly damaged equipment.
