Then identify exactly where the process fails—when choosing the file, during immediate validation, while it uploads, or after the server receives it. Those details determine the next useful test. There is no universal picture-size limit or single fix that works on every website.
First, identify the stage that fails
Do not begin by changing several things at once. Record what you see and preserve the exact error message. The same picture can fail for different reasons depending on the stage.

Write down the filename, extension, approximate size, browser and device, the time of the attempt, and whether the failure occurred before or after you pressed Submit. This gives support a reproducible description instead of “the upload does not work.”

Find the rules beside the upload control, in the page’s help text, or in the service’s support documentation. Check all four categories:

- Formats: Look for explicit extensions or media types such as JPEG or PNG. A browser may be able to display a format that the website refuses.
- Maximum file size: Treat the stated limit as specific to that site, account, plan or endpoint. No universal maximum applies to all websites.
- Dimensions: Some services require minimum or maximum width and height, or a particular aspect ratio.
- File count: The control may accept one picture, a fixed number, or a batch.
A file picker’s filter is only a hint. MDN Web Docs explains that the HTML accept attribute “doesn’t validate the types of the selected files; it provides hints for browsers to guide users towards selecting the correct file.” The server can still reject the file after selection.
Inspect the picture itself
Confirm the real format
Look at the file details on your operating system rather than relying only on the filename. A file named photo.jpg may contain data in another format, and changing .png to .jpg does not convert the contents. If the site lists JPEG or PNG, create a genuine JPEG or PNG copy with an image editor or converter when appropriate.
JPEG and PNG remain broadly supported web formats, while support and server acceptance vary for newer or less common formats. Do not assume that “it opens in my browser” means “the upload endpoint accepts it.”
Check size in bytes
Open the file’s properties or information panel and compare its byte size with the website’s stated maximum. The browser File API exposes a selected file’s size in bytes, so a site can enforce this check before sending anything.

Check dimensions and orientation
Use the image information panel or an editor to check width, height and orientation. A service may reject a picture that is below a minimum, above a maximum, or outside a required aspect ratio even when its byte size is small enough. If you edit it, save a new copy and keep the original unchanged.
Make a compliant copy without destroying the original
Only convert or resize after confirming which requirement is failing. Export to a format named by the site, reduce dimensions if they exceed the documented maximum, or compress the image until it is below the stated byte limit. A converter is a conditional remedy, not a universal cure: it will not correct a disabled upload service, an authentication problem or a server-side request limit unrelated to the image.
- Keep the original file so you can restore quality or provide it to support if requested.
- After conversion, verify the new file’s actual extension, format, dimensions and byte size.
- Avoid repeatedly recompressing a JPEG; each lossy export can reduce quality.
- Do not upload a sensitive original to an online converter unless you understand its privacy terms and have permission to do so.
Retry while changing one variable at a time
- Choose the compliant copy and retry once on the same page.
- If it fails, try the same file in another current browser or on another device. Record whether the result changes.
- If the result changes, compare the browser version, extensions, device permissions and account session. Keep the successful combination documented.
- If the result does not change, stop making random changes and gather the details for the website’s support team.
Trying another browser or device is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed repair. Clearing a cache, switching networks or disabling extensions may sometimes be reasonable tests, but the general upload mechanics do not establish that any of those actions will fix a particular site.

Understand what happens after you select the file
An HTML form or script sends the picture data to a server, commonly as a multipart HTTP request. Several layers can impose limits: the page’s client-side validation, the application, a reverse proxy, a web server and storage or security services. A request can therefore pass the visible picker rules and still be rejected later.
For developers investigating their own site, inspect the browser’s developer tools Network panel while reproducing the failure. Note the request URL, status code, response text, request payload size and whether the request was sent at all. Do not paste authentication tokens or private image data into a public issue. A 4xx response often indicates validation or permission handling; a 5xx response points to a server-side failure, but only the site owner can interpret its exact configuration.

When to contact the website
Contact support when the picture meets every published requirement, when the error is server-side or generic, or when multiple compliant files fail. Send:
- the exact error text and a screenshot with personal information redacted;
- the file extension, format if known, approximate byte size and pixel dimensions;
- your browser and version, operating system or device, and whether the failure happens before or after submission;
- whether another current browser or device produced the same result;
- the approximate time and any request or incident identifier shown by the site.
Do not send a private picture unless the support process requires it and you are comfortable doing so. Ask support to confirm the current accepted formats, dimensions, maximum request or file size, and whether your account has additional restrictions.
