Yes—you can transfer WhatsApp chats directly from one Android phone to another without Google Drive or a computer. Use WhatsApp’s built-in Transfer chats feature. During setup on the new phone, choose Transfer from old phone or Transfer chat history, not Restore from backup. Keep the old phone working until you have checked the chats and media on the new one.
Before you start
The direct transfer is designed for moving WhatsApp chat history and associated media between phones. It avoids restoring a Google Drive backup, but it is not a way to skip account verification: you will need access to the same phone number, and the phones need a reliable connection.
- Keep the old phone available and unlocked. WhatsApp should still open on it with the history you want to move.
- Use the same phone number. Have access to the number for SMS or call verification on the new phone.
- Charge both phones or connect them to power. Keep them close together and unlocked during the transfer.
- Connect both phones to reliable Wi-Fi and update WhatsApp from Google Play where possible.
- Check free storage on the new phone, especially if your chats include a large media library.
- Do not wipe, reset, or trade in the old phone until you have inspected the transferred conversations and opened important media on the new phone.
WhatsApp’s setup flow and wording can vary with app version, Android version, language, and manufacturer. Google’s Android transfer guidance describes choosing “Transfer from old phone” for the direct route rather than restoring from a cloud backup.
Transfer WhatsApp directly between Android phones
1. Start the transfer on the old phone
- Open WhatsApp on the old Android phone.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then go to Settings > Chats > Transfer chats.
- Tap Start. Leave the old phone ready to scan the QR code that will appear on the new one.
If you do not see Transfer chats, check for a WhatsApp update and confirm that you are using the WhatsApp account with the history you want to move. The path may be labelled or placed slightly differently in some releases.

2. Set up WhatsApp on the new phone
- Install WhatsApp from Google Play and open it on the new Android phone.
- Enter the same phone number used for WhatsApp on the old phone, then complete SMS or call verification.
- When WhatsApp offers a transfer or restore choice, select Transfer from old phone, Transfer chat history, or the equivalent direct-transfer option. Do not select Restore from backup if your goal is to avoid Google Drive.
- Grant the requested permissions. When the QR code appears on the new phone, scan it with the old phone using the transfer screen.
- Approve the connection on the old phone and leave both devices close, unlocked, and connected until WhatsApp says the transfer is complete.
The transfer uses a local wireless connection between the phones, so it does not upload the migration copy to Google Drive. However, do not assume that the process is completely offline: account verification and a stable connection may still be required. Availability and exact prompts can depend on the devices and software versions.
3. Check the result before retiring the old phone
On the new phone, open several recent and older conversations. Check important photos, videos, documents, and voice messages, and allow time for a large media library to finish appearing. Only after the material you need is present should you erase, reset, or hand over the old phone.

What transfers—and what to verify
The feature is intended to move WhatsApp chats and their associated media. Do not treat “transfer chats” as a guarantee that every piece of WhatsApp-related account data will move. In particular, some categories such as call history or payment-related records may behave differently or be excluded; a third-party technical guide notes those potential exclusions, but it is not a WhatsApp guarantee.

If WhatsApp is already active on the new phone
WhatsApp does not merge the old and new chat histories. A transfer or restore of the old history can replace WhatsApp history already created on the new phone. Before restarting setup, save or export anything new on the new phone that you cannot afford to lose.
- Preserve any important new messages or media on the new phone.
- Uninstall WhatsApp from the new phone, then reinstall it from Google Play.
- Set it up with the same phone number and choose the direct transfer option when it appears.
In general, you need to restart WhatsApp setup—not factory-reset the entire Android phone. Google recommends reinstalling WhatsApp to restart the flow when the expected transfer or restore choice is missing. Messages created on the new phone may be lost when you bring over the old history.

Troubleshooting
The QR code will not scan
- Turn up the brightness on the new phone, clean both camera lenses, and hold the phones steady at a different distance.
- Temporarily remove a privacy filter or screen protector if it obscures the code.
- Restart WhatsApp on both phones, toggle Wi-Fi off and on, and try again with a newly generated QR code. A code from an earlier setup attempt may no longer be valid.
- Update WhatsApp and restart both phones. Temporarily disable VPNs, battery saver, hotspot switching, or aggressive security filters if they interfere with the connection.
The transfer option does not appear
It may have been skipped, or WhatsApp may already be configured on the new phone. Confirm the old phone is still logged in and that you are setting up the new phone with the same number. If necessary, preserve anything important that was created on the new phone, uninstall WhatsApp there, reinstall it, and repeat setup. WhatsApp labels may vary, and cloned or dual-app installations can have a different flow.

Keep both phones powered, nearby, unlocked, and on a stable Wi-Fi connection; make sure the new phone has enough free space. Restart both devices and try again. A failed transfer should not, according to Google’s guidance, delete the old phone’s data, but keep the old phone intact until you have verified the new copy. If repeated attempts fail, use an existing Google Drive backup if you are willing and able to do so, or contact WhatsApp support.

The verification code does not arrive
The direct transfer does not bypass WhatsApp account verification. Check that the number entered on the new phone is correct, that the SIM or number can receive SMS or calls, and that the phone has network service. Complete WhatsApp’s verification prompts before attempting the transfer again.
Chats are present but media is missing
Allow time for a large library to appear, confirm there is enough free storage, and check WhatsApp’s permissions for photos, videos, files, and media in Android settings. If media is still missing after 24 hours, follow Google’s advice to contact WhatsApp support rather than deleting the old phone’s copy.
You have a different phone number
Do not start the standard transfer as though the number were unchanged. Google’s guidance says to use WhatsApp’s Change number feature on the old phone first, while you can still access both the old and new numbers, and then transfer the data.

The old phone is lost, damaged, or no longer opens WhatsApp
The direct phone-to-phone method depends on the old phone and its WhatsApp history being available. If you cannot use it, an existing Google Drive backup may be the practical recovery option, provided you have the Google Account that holds it and the backup is current. Without a usable old phone or backup, avoid assuming that copied folders or an unverified recovery tool can reconstruct the chats.
Samsung phones: Smart Switch is not a WhatsApp-chat substitute
Samsung’s support guidance says Smart Switch can move the WhatsApp application in the relevant Android-to-Android workflow, but does not transfer WhatsApp chat data and media there. Moving the app icon is not the same as migrating its chat history. Use WhatsApp’s own transfer flow for that. Smart Switch’s capabilities differ by migration direction and data type, so do not assume features described for iPhone-to-Galaxy transfers apply to Android-to-Android chat migration.

What if direct transfer is not an option?
- Use a Google Drive restore only if it suits you. It is a fallback, not required for the direct transfer. It depends on a completed, sufficiently recent backup and the Google Account associated with it.
- Contact WhatsApp support if the official transfer repeatedly fails or an expected media library does not appear.
- Treat manual file copying as an advanced, device-specific workaround. Android storage locations and protections vary; copying a WhatsApp folder is not a universal or guaranteed way to restore encrypted chat history.
- Be cautious with third-party migration tools. Many require a computer, may cost money, and involve handing chat data to another provider. Google warns that third-party data-migration apps are unsupported and can cause migration problems. They are not necessary for the normal Android-to-Android transfer.
