For most cameras, the simplest and most reliable method is a memory-card reader. Turn off the camera, remove its card, insert the card into a compatible reader, then copy the files from the card’s usually named DCIM folder into a dated folder on your Windows PC or Mac. Verify the copied files before you erase or format the card.
You can also connect the camera directly with a data-capable USB cable or transfer selected images over Wi-Fi. Those methods are useful in the right situation, but they depend more heavily on the camera model, cable, USB mode and companion software.
Before you start
- Charge the camera battery, especially for a USB or Wi-Fi transfer.
- Check the card type: full-size SD/SDHC/SDXC, microSD with an adapter, CompactFlash, CFexpress Type A or B, XQD or another format.
- Have a compatible card reader or the camera’s correct data USB cable. A charge-only cable will not transfer files.
- Make sure the computer has enough free storage for RAW files and video.
- Choose a destination such as
Pictures/Camera Photos/2026/2026-08-18 - Event Name.
Camera ports, card formats and menu labels vary. Your camera manual remains the authority for model-specific settings.

Method 1: Use a memory-card reader (recommended)
A reader is usually the best choice for large batches, RAW images and video. It avoids camera-specific USB problems and does not drain the camera battery. Actual speed depends on the card, reader, USB standard and computer, so “faster” is not guaranteed—but a reader is often the most dependable workflow. Canon documents copying card folders through a reader, and Fujifilm recommends a reader in its computer-transfer instructions (Canon; Fujifilm).

- Stop taking pictures and turn the camera off.
- Remove the card and insert it into a reader that supports that exact format. Use a microSD adapter when appropriate.
- Connect the reader to the computer.
- On Windows, open File Explorer > This PC and select the card. On macOS, open Finder > Locations and select it.
- Open
DCIM, then inspect other folders too. Some Canon cameras also use folders such asCRMorXFVC; do not delete unfamiliar folders without checking the manual (Canon folder guidance). - Copy the required files and folders—do not move them—to your dated destination.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Open several copied files, including a RAW file and a video when available.
- Eject the card using Windows or macOS, then remove it.
Keep the card untouched until the computer copy is verified and backed up. Format the card later in the camera, not casually in the computer.
Method 2: Connect the camera directly by USB
USB is convenient when you do not want to remove the card, but the camera may not appear as a normal disk. It may require PTP, MTP, USB Storage, USB Card Reader or a manufacturer-specific mode.
- Charge the battery or connect suitable external power.
- Turn the camera off and connect a known data-capable USB cable.
- Turn the camera on and select its computer-transfer mode if prompted.
- Use File Explorer/Finder, the operating-system importer or the manufacturer’s utility to choose copy/import, not delete.
- Keep the camera awake during a long transfer; automatic shutdown can interrupt imports.
- After completion, close the importer, safely disconnect the camera and turn it off before unplugging if the manual advises it.
Canon models may use Photo Import/Remote Control with EOS Utility; Fujifilm models may use USB CARD READER. These are examples, not universal menu paths (Canon; Fujifilm). Canon also warns that an active Wi-Fi connection can prevent interface-cable communication on some cameras (Canon connection notes).

On a Mac: Photos or Image Capture
With the camera connected and set to its import mode, open Photos, select the camera under Devices, choose an album and click Import Selected or Import All. Keep originals on the camera unless deletion is intentional (Apple Photos guide).
For ordinary files in a folder, open Image Capture, select the camera, choose a location under Import To, then click Download or Download All. A Mac with an SD slot can read the card directly. Apple’s guide also notes that camera auto-shutdown can interrupt downloads (Apple Image Capture guide).
On Windows: File Explorer or Photos
With a card reader or recognized camera, use File Explorer > This PC, open the device and copy its folders. You can also try the Windows Photos app’s Import option, but camera behavior differs by model and Windows version. Microsoft’s documented page is primarily for phones and directs camera users to the manufacturer for model-specific instructions (Microsoft guidance). If Photos does not list the camera, File Explorer or the manufacturer utility may still work.

Method 3: Transfer over Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is useful for a few selected images when you have no reader or cable. Pair the camera with its vendor app or desktop workflow, select the files and choose the original-size option if available. Some apps default to resized JPEGs and may not transfer RAW files.
Wireless transfers usually involve more pairing, app compatibility and battery drain, and are slower for large RAW or video batches. Sony documents USB, Wi-Fi and memory-card routes separately, with model-dependent troubleshooting (Sony support).
Where should the files go?
A simple structure keeps originals recoverable:

Exports/Keep camera originals separate from edited exports. Preserve filename extensions and do not rename files until you know the import completed. In Lightroom Classic, choose Copy when importing from a card rather than Move; catalog software can then organize files while leaving the card intact (Adobe Lightroom reference).

JPEG, HEIF, RAW, video and sidecar files
- JPEG: broadly compatible and ready to share.
- HEIF/HEIC: efficient but not supported equally by every operating system or application.
- RAW: sensor data requiring a compatible decoder; extensions include CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF and CR2.
- Video: may be in another folder or alongside still photos.
- Sidecars: files such as
.xmphold metadata or editing instructions and should remain beside their RAW files.
Copying does not reduce quality: the original file is transferred bit-for-bit unless you deliberately resize, convert or export it. A file can transfer successfully even if your current app cannot preview its RAW or HEIF format. Update the app, use the manufacturer’s software or a RAW-capable editor, and retain the original.
Troubleshooting
The computer does not recognize the camera
- Turn the camera and computer connection off and on.
- Charge the battery and try another USB port.
- Replace the cable with one known to transfer data.
- Change the camera to PTP, MTP, USB Storage or USB Card Reader mode.
- Close the camera’s Wi-Fi connection and other photo apps.
- Restart the computer and check the exact model’s support page.
- Test the card in a reader. If it mounts, the likely problem is the cable, USB mode, camera port, battery or software rather than the photos.
The card is not recognized
Confirm that the reader supports the card type and capacity, reinsert it and try another reader or computer. If the computer asks to format it, cancel—especially when the photos have no other copy. Stop writing to a possibly failing card and use a reputable recovery service or workflow rather than repeatedly testing it.

Inspect the entire card in File Explorer or Finder. RAW files may be in another folder, filtered out by an importer, unsupported by the app, stored on a second card or not recorded because the camera was set to JPEG-only. Wi-Fi apps may also have delivered resized previews.

The transfer stops halfway
Do not remove a card while its access light is active. Note the last copied folder, restart into the same destination and skip existing files if offered. Use smaller batches, a reader instead of the camera, another cable or reader, and check free space. For files over 4 GB, follow the camera manual; a Fujifilm instruction, for example, recommends a reader for that model, not as a universal rule (Fujifilm documentation).
Verify, back up and then reuse the card
- Compare the copied file count or folder size with the card where practical.
- Open several images, at least one RAW file and one video if present.
- Make another copy on an external drive or a properly configured cloud backup. Synchronization alone may replicate deletions and is not always an independent backup.
- Eject the card and keep it until both copies are usable.
- Only then format the card in the camera for reuse.
If you need a phone intermediary, use a compatible USB-C or Lightning card reader or USB-OTG connection. Check that the camera app transfers full-resolution originals; direct card-to-computer copying is generally simpler for a large batch. Adobe documents direct camera/card import in Lightroom for iOS and Android (Adobe mobile guide).
The Bottom Line
Use a compatible memory-card reader, copy the card’s folders to a dated computer folder, verify the originals and make a second backup before formatting the card. USB and Wi-Fi are useful alternatives, but their success depends on your camera’s cable, mode, software and battery.
