For a few photos or videos, select them in Google Photos, choose Download, and save the files to your external drive. For an entire library, use Google Takeout, download its ZIP archives to a folder on the drive, extract them, and verify the copy before deleting anything online.
The controls below reflect Google’s interface checked August 18, 2026; labels can differ by account, browser, language, or later interface changes.
Before you start
- Use a computer. Takeout archive downloads and extraction are much more reliable on Windows or macOS than on a phone or tablet.
- Estimate capacity. Leave room for the extracted library, the ZIP archives, and temporary extraction data. A drive with at least 25–50% more capacity than the current library is a practical target.
- Connect the drive directly. Use a reliable cable and port, and keep the computer connected to power and awake during large downloads.
- Create a dedicated folder. For example,
Google Photos Takeout - August 2026. - Choose a compatible file system. exFAT is the practical choice for Windows-and-Mac use. NTFS is native to Windows, while macOS generally reads it but may need additional software to write to it. APFS suits a Mac-only drive. Avoid FAT32 for large exports because one file cannot exceed 4 GB. Formatting erases existing data, so check a new drive before reformatting.
Decide whether you need a handful of items, a particular album, or a complete disaster-recovery copy. That choice determines the fastest method.

Google Takeout creates the archive in Google’s cloud. It does not list USB storage as a transfer destination; the computer’s browser downloads the finished archive, and that browser can save it directly to your external drive.

- Sign in to the Google Account that owns the photos.
- Open Google Takeout.
- Choose Deselect all, then select Google Photos.
- If All data included appears, open it and remove categories you do not need when the interface allows.
- Select Next step.
- Under Transfer to, choose Send download link via email for the simplest local-drive workflow.
- Set Frequency to Export once. Scheduled exports every two months for one year are available in Takeout, but they are not automatic synchronization to a USB drive and are unavailable to users enrolled in Advanced Protection.
- Set File type to ZIP. ZIP opens broadly; TGZ can require extra software, particularly on Windows.
- Under File size, choose 50 GB where that current option is offered. A larger limit usually means fewer split archives.
- Choose Create export. Google says preparation can take minutes to several days, depending on the amount of data.
- When the completion email arrives, connect the external drive and change the browser’s download location to the dedicated folder on that drive.
- Open the email’s Download archive link and download every ZIP part. Keep the ZIP files until extraction and verification are finished.
Google Takeout archives expire after approximately seven days and can currently be downloaded only five times, so start the download promptly. If you make changes while an export is being prepared, those additions or deletions may not be included; run a later export for the newest items.
How to download Takeout files without filling the internal drive
Windows
- Connect and open the external drive in File Explorer.
- Open your browser’s Settings, find Downloads, and change the download folder to the Takeout folder on the external drive. Enable “Ask where to save” instead if you want to choose it for each archive.
- Start the Takeout download and confirm the browser shows the external-drive path. Do not disconnect the drive until each part finishes.
macOS
- Connect the drive and create the destination folder in Finder.
- In Safari, Chrome, or another browser, open Settings or Preferences and change Downloads to that folder (or enable a save-location prompt).
- Download while the Mac is on power, awake, and connected to a stable network.
This avoids storing the large ZIP files on the internal disk. The computer is still required to authenticate, download, and manage the files.
Cloud staging when local downloading is unreliable
Takeout can deliver an archive to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box. You can then copy it to the external drive. Google Drive space counts against your shared account quota, and a third-party provider’s terms apply after delivery. The drive must still hold both the archives and the extracted files.

How to extract and organize the archives
- Download all archive parts before reorganizing anything.
- On the external drive, create one extraction folder separate from the original ZIP files.
- Extract each archive with the operating system’s extractor or a reputable archive utility. Preserve the folders Takeout creates; do not merge or rename aggressively until you know how your photo software reads them.
- If present, open
archive_browser.html. Google says it provides additional information about the export’s formats and how to open it. - Keep every ZIP until you have opened representative files and confirmed the archive is complete.
Do not expect one perfectly chronological folder. Takeout can include organizational folders, sidecar metadata, and separate album or product structures.
How to transfer only selected photos or albums
- Open Google Photos in a desktop browser.
- Select the photos or videos, or open an album and select the items you want.
- Choose the three-dot menu, then Download.
- When prompted, save to the external-drive folder. Multiple items may arrive as a ZIP; extract it on the drive.
This is preferable for a small curated archive. It is inefficient for a large library because selection, downloading, and checking must be repeated many times.

What happens to quality, dates, edits, and metadata?
Quality
Takeout exports what Google currently stores. Original quality keeps the resolution at which the item was taken; Storage saver may compress or resize media, and some regions have Express quality. An export cannot restore quality already reduced during upload. See Google’s definitions at Google Photos backup quality help.
Capture dates versus file dates
The original timestamp can remain embedded in the photo or video’s metadata, while Windows or macOS may assign the downloaded file a new filesystem timestamp based on download time. Check EXIF or other embedded metadata in a metadata-aware application rather than relying only on the date shown in Finder or File Explorer.
JSON sidecars
Google may export information that is not part of the original media file—comments are one example—in separate JSON files. Keep the JSON files until you decide you no longer need Google Photos-specific metadata.
Edits, albums, and organization
An exported original, a Google Photos-edited version, album membership, captions, comments, sharing details, and face-group information are different kinds of data. Local software may not reproduce Google Photos’ organization or edits as ordinary folders or universally readable attributes. Preserve the original Takeout structure before making a cleaner personal arrangement.
How much space do you need?
Google storage is shared by Photos, Drive, and Gmail, so the account’s total usage is not an exact byte-for-byte measure of the Photos library. Check the account’s storage details at Google’s storage help, then allow for:

- the extracted media;
- all ZIP archives;
- temporary extraction space;
- future additions; and
- a second copy for valuable files.
The minimum drive should exceed the estimated extracted library. A larger drive is safer if you intend to retain the ZIPs and make another copy.

Verify the transfer before deleting anything
- Confirm every archive part finished and that the number of files matches the Takeout download page or email.
- Open each ZIP or test it with an archive utility.
- Browse folders from different years and devices.
- Open representative JPEG, HEIC, PNG, RAW, and video files if your library contains them.
- Check several files’ dimensions, capture dates, and sizes, and search for zero-byte files.
- Safely eject and reconnect the drive, then open files again.
- For an irreplaceable or very large archive, use a checksum or file-verification utility. Google does not promise a complete end-to-end checksum manifest for every export.
Leave the Google Photos library untouched until these checks pass and a second copy exists where practical.
Is one external hard drive enough?
No. One drive is a local copy, not a complete backup strategy. For irreplaceable media, keep the Google Photos copy or another cloud copy, the local external drive, and a second copy stored separately—ideally in another physical location.
HDD or SSD?

Choose capacity and redundancy before premium speed. A second ordinary drive is often safer than putting the entire budget into one expensive drive.
Export strategy and alternatives
Full versus incremental exports
Use a full export for the first complete archive, account migration, leaving Google Photos, or disaster recovery. Use later, smaller exports for updates, understanding that Takeout is not a live synchronization system.

Date ranges and advanced tools
Google’s current Takeout help does not support date-range exports as a dependable built-in function. For a date-limited set, manually download selected items or create a full export and filter locally. Third-party migration tools may add filtering or incremental workflows, but they also add account permissions, privacy, subscription, API, and reliability considerations; Takeout remains the default method.

Can I transfer Google Photos directly to an external hard drive?
You can download the Takeout ZIP files directly to a folder on the connected drive, but Google creates the archive first and does not transfer from its servers straight to USB without a computer.
Do I need Google One?
No. Google Takeout is available without a Google One subscription. Extra Google One storage is useful only if you need cloud staging or continued online storage; plan details vary by country and account at Google One plans.
Will Takeout delete my photos?
No. Creating or downloading an export does not delete the Google Photos library. Delete online copies only after local verification and a separate backup.

Can I download without using internal disk space?
Yes. Set the browser’s download location to a folder on the external drive before starting the archive download. The computer still handles the transfer.

Why did Google create several ZIP files?
Large exports are split at the file-size limit you selected. Download every part before extraction; choosing the current 50 GB option generally reduces the number of parts.
Should I keep the JSON files?
Keep them until you decide you do not need Google Photos-specific information such as comments or other metadata that is not embedded in the media.
Will the original dates and quality be preserved?
Embedded capture metadata can remain, but the operating system may show a new file date. Takeout preserves the quality Google stored; it cannot restore quality reduced by an earlier Storage saver or Express upload.

Do not rely on a built-in Takeout date-range filter. Manually download a curated selection or export the library and filter the local copy.
What if I no longer have access to the Google Account?
Takeout requires you to authenticate to that account. Recover account access through Google’s account-recovery process or use another verified copy; an external drive cannot be created from Google Photos without authorization.
How often should I repeat the export?
Make a full export initially, then repeat it when the library changes materially or on a schedule that fits your risk. Scheduled Takeout exports still require you to retrieve and copy each archive.
