Track each platform with its own first-party measure: Amazon Best Sellers Rank for a book’s relative sales activity, Google Search Console’s average position for search visibility, and YouTube Studio or authorized YouTube APIs for views. These figures measure different things, update on different schedules, and should not be compared as though they were one universal ranking score.
For a useful record, save the date range or timestamp, marketplace or audience segment, metric definition, and data source alongside every number. That context helps explain why a rank or count changed—and why a manual Google search may not match Search Console.
What each platform’s number means
| Platform | Useful first-party measure | What it tells you | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Best Sellers Rank (Sales Rank) and category rank | Relative book performance compared with other books in the applicable category or marketplace | It is not an exact sales or activity count; ranks from unrelated categories are not directly comparable. |
| Google Search | Search Console average position, with clicks, impressions and CTR | How a property’s topmost result position averages across impressions in Google Search results | It is not a promise of the position a particular person will see in a live search. |
| YouTube | Views in Studio or authorized YouTube APIs | Legitimate playback starts counted across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams | Processed Analytics data typically lags; Realtime is an early signal, not always the same count as processed reporting. |
Use a platform’s first-party reporting for its own metric. Third-party rank trackers or public-page snapshots can add context, but they do not replace Amazon, Search Console or YouTube’s underlying data.
How do I track my Amazon ranking?
For a book, record its displayed Best Sellers Rank and relevant category ranks on the same Amazon marketplace over time. Amazon KDP explains that rankings are relative: a Sales Rank can change even when a book’s activity level stays the same. Treat movement as a directional signal, not as a conversion into a fixed number of sales.

Make a consistent rank log
- Identify the exact ASIN or ISBN for the edition you want to monitor. An ebook, paperback and hardcover may have different product listings.
- Choose the marketplace, such as Amazon.com, and keep it consistent. A rank on one country site is not the same measurement as a rank on another.
- Open the book’s product page and note the displayed Best Sellers Rank and each relevant category rank.
- Record the date, time, time zone, marketplace, category and rank. Take readings at a consistent time if you are comparing day-to-day movement.
- Review a series of observations rather than reacting to one change. Amazon says ranks are updated at least daily and may take up to two days to appear.
A compact spreadsheet can use columns such as timestamp, marketplace, ASIN/ISBN, category, and rank. Keep category names with values: a rank of 500 in one category cannot be read as equivalent to rank 500 in an unrelated category.
When rank is the wrong metric
If the decision is about actual orders, royalties or revenue, use the relevant KDP or seller reports. A rank is a relative position, not a demand counter. Do not infer a precise sales total from a rank alone, and do not treat a delayed rank change as evidence that no activity occurred.
What is my Google ranking?
For a property you manage, Google Search Console’s Performance report is the first-party place to track search visibility. It provides clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR) and average position. Google defines position as the topmost result position occupied by the property, averaged across impressions; the metric applies to Google Search results.
Check a query, page, country or device
- Verify the site as a property in Google Search Console.
- Open Performance and select the search-results report.
- Set the date range you need, then review clicks, impressions, CTR and average position.
- Open the Queries dimension to inspect search terms, or Pages to inspect landing pages. Add country and device filters when the audience or strategy calls for them.
- Compare like with like: use the same date ranges, query/page selection, country and device when looking for a trend.
Average position is calculated from impressions and the property’s topmost position, not from a single fixed result seen by every searcher. Location, device, search history, result features and timing can all affect a live search. That is why a manual search for your own keyword can disagree with Search Console without either number being a simple error. Use Search Console to evaluate trends and segment changes; use a live search only as a contextual spot check.

Automate Google Search Console reporting
The Search Analytics API can return data for a date range with dimensions such as query, page, country and device. Google’s guidance says data is typically available after 2–3 days, so daily automation should request one-day ranges on a recurring schedule rather than assume today’s final data is ready. The documented API limit is 50,000 rows per day per search type; page through results and do not assume one response contains every row.
For a reliable daily process, request a completed day, store the date range and dimensions with the returned metrics, and rerun or backfill recent dates if your reporting needs to account for processing lag. Compare aggregate totals with the Search Console interface for the same property and filters, not with an unfiltered hand search.
How can I track YouTube views over time?
Use YouTube Studio for a channel-level overview or open a specific video and view its Analytics. Review views alongside watch time, subscribers and traffic sources; use Realtime for early performance signals. YouTube defines views as legitimate views counted when playback starts across Shorts, long-form video and live streams.
Track a channel or video in Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Analytics for channel reporting.
- For one upload, choose the video and open its Analytics.
- Choose a date range and record views with watch time, subscribers and traffic sources where those measures help explain the change.
- Use Realtime when you need an early signal, and label it as Realtime rather than treating it as a final processed count.
- Save the date range and data freshness with each export or report.
Build an API-based report
The YouTube Analytics API supports metrics such as views, engagedViews and watch time, with dimensions such as day, video, country or traffic source. An authorized query can support a custom dashboard; use the Reporting API when you need bulk historical report files. Analytics processing typically takes 48–72 hours, so label reports with the requested period and the date the data was retrieved. For current individual-video statistics in software, the YouTube Data API is the appropriate source noted for current counts; do not assume a partially processed Analytics report is current.

Choose the right tracking method
Before comparing tools or charts, decide which kind of evidence you need. A first-party report answers what the platform measured; a manual observation answers what appeared to you at a particular moment; an external estimate is a separate methodology.
- Metric definition: Is this relative rank, average search position, or counted video views?
- Freshness: When was the underlying data updated, and is the number preliminary or processed?
- Segmentation: Can you isolate marketplace, category, query, page, country, device, video or traffic source?
- History: Can you export and retain observations for the date ranges you need?
- Geography: Does the measurement refer to a specific Amazon marketplace or Google/YouTube audience segment?
- Evidence type: Is the number observed by the platform, seen on a public page, or estimated by an outside service?
Save a visual record of a public page
A screenshot can preserve what a public Amazon listing, Google results page or YouTube video page looked like at a given time. It is useful for a visual audit or presentation, but it does not establish a book’s sales, replace Search Console’s average position, or verify YouTube’s processed view count. For a repeatable record, save the capture timestamp, target URL, viewport and any relevant search conditions with the image.
Or skip the browser setup
If your workflow needs a clean capture of a public page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request takes a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor would and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. This cURL request saves a WebP capture of the specified page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example target with a public page you are allowed to capture. The request uses an access key; keep it private. The equivalent Python request is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js using fetch:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo has 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicking an element, hiding selectors, waiting for a selector/delay/network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone/geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI spec and familiar parameter names used by other screenshot APIs. Use these capture options to shape a visual record; they do not change the underlying platform metric.

Amazon rank has not changed, or changed unexpectedly
- Check the marketplace and edition. Confirm the same product identifier and country site are being compared.
- Check the category. Category rank and overall Sales Rank are distinct contexts; do not compare values from unrelated categories.
- Allow for update delay. Rank updates at least daily and a new value can take up to two days to appear.
- Do not translate rank into orders. Use sales or KDP reporting for order and revenue decisions.
Search Console does not match a manual Google search
- Match the scope. Check property, date range, query or page, country and device filters in the report.
- Compare an average with an average. Search Console position averages topmost result positions over impressions; a live search is one result page at one moment.
- Check the reporting period. Recent Search Analytics data may not yet be available; Google’s guidance is typically 2–3 days.
YouTube Studio, Realtime and a report disagree
- Confirm date range and video/channel scope. A channel total and a single-video figure are not interchangeable.
- Identify the report type. Realtime is an early signal; processed Analytics data typically takes 48–72 hours.
- Use an appropriate source for the question. Use Studio or Analytics reporting for analysis, and the YouTube Data API for current individual-video statistics in software.
A Search Analytics API export is incomplete
Check whether the request spans too many rows or whether the client fetched only the first page. Google documents a 50,000-row-per-day limit per search type. Request manageable date ranges, page through results, and preserve the dimensions used so the export can be compared with the intended report.
Keep a useful history
Choose a cadence that fits the platform’s update behavior instead of collecting numbers more frequently than they can meaningfully change. For every observation, retain source, timestamp or reporting date, metric name, filters and dimensions. That small amount of metadata turns a collection of changing numbers into a usable trend—and makes apparent disagreements diagnosable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I combine Amazon rank, Google position and YouTube views into one score?
Not without defining a separate model and its assumptions: the three measures have different units and meanings, so a direct arithmetic comparison is not meaningful.
Can a screenshot prove a platform’s rank or view count?
A screenshot documents the appearance of a page at capture time. It is not a substitute for the platform’s reporting data or a guarantee that the displayed information was complete.
Should I use a third-party estimate instead of platform reporting?
Use estimates only when their methodology answers a question the first-party report cannot; keep them labeled as estimates and do not mix them with first-party values as though they were the same metric.
