You can screen eclipse glasses at home for obvious damage or inadequate darkness, but no flashlight, phone, or quick look can certify them as safe. The most important check is whether you can trace the pair to a known manufacturer and an authorized seller, with product testing documented against ISO 12312-2. If you cannot verify that, don’t look through them at the Sun; use an indirect projection method instead.

What “eyes melting” gets wrong—and what the real danger is

Eclipse glasses do not literally melt your eyes. Looking directly at the Sun can injure the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. One possible injury is solar retinopathy, which may cause blurred or distorted vision, a central blind spot, light sensitivity, or changes in color perception. Symptoms can take hours or days to become noticeable, so feeling fine right away does not rule out injury. Ultraviolet exposure can also damage the cornea and cause photokeratitis. These risks apply whenever the bright solar disk is visible, not just during an eclipse. See the National Eye Institute’s eclipse safety guidance and the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s overview of solar retinopathy.

How to check eclipse glasses at home

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) describes home checks that can expose obvious problems. Treat them as screening, not proof of safety: a filter may look very dark while still failing to control ultraviolet or infrared light. Follow these steps in order.

  1. Verify the manufacturer and seller. Identify who made the exact pair and where you bought it. Check the AAS supplier list and the manufacturer’s own authorized-reseller information. AAS warns that counterfeiters may put a legitimate manufacturer’s name on unsafe viewers, so a logo alone is not enough. If you cannot trace the purchase to the manufacturer or an authorized seller, do not use the pair.
  2. Inspect the filters and frame. In bright room light, check both filters for scratches, punctures, tears, creases, warping, delamination, loose edges, or other damage. Discard a damaged pair; do not patch it with tape, glue, household film, or replacement plastic. Keep cardboard viewers dry because moisture can swell the material and loosen the filters. AAS’s safe-viewing guidance covers condition and handling.
  3. Try the indoor darkness check. Put the glasses on indoors and look at ordinary objects such as furniture, pictures, and lampshades. They should not be visible; an exceptionally bright light source might appear only as an extremely faint point. If normal room objects are readily visible, reject the glasses.
  4. Try the outdoor ambient-light check. On a sunny day, put on the glasses and look around—not at the Sun at first. Ordinary outdoor objects should be invisible or extremely dim. A reflection from a very bright, shiny surface may be faintly visible. If the scene looks merely dim rather than almost black, stop using the pair.
  5. Only then make a brief solar glance. Put the glasses on before turning toward the Sun. Look for less than a second, turn away, and remove the glasses only after facing away. The Sun should appear sharply defined and comfortably bright, roughly like a full Moon—not glaring, painfully bright, hazy, or visually overwhelming. If it looks too bright or causes discomfort, turn away immediately and do not use that pair.

The indoor, outdoor, and brief-glance checks follow AAS instructions for assessing solar viewers. Even if a pair passes every visual check, those checks cannot measure its ultraviolet and infrared transmission or establish compliance with the standard.

  • 2023 ANNULAR AND 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES - On October 14th 2023, an annular eclipse (when the sun forms a ring around the moon) will cross the United States from Oregon to Texas. We will then experience a once-in-a-generation Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024 - the only USA total eclipse until August 23rd, 2044. You will be amazed as the moon completely blocks the sun during Totality, which lasts but mere minutes. Soluna Glasses are what you need to safely view both of these eclipses.

What ISO 12312-2 means—and what it does not mean

ISO 12312-2 is the relevant standard for solar viewers intended for direct, unaided viewing of the Sun. ISO publishes the standard; it does not test or certify individual glasses. Consequently, an “ISO certified” phrase, ISO number, logo, or certificate image printed on a product is not proof that the exact pair is compliant.

Look for a traceable manufacturer whose product testing is documented by a laboratory accredited for the relevant work. AAS says qualified testing uses the ISO/IEC 17025 framework, with accreditation through a body participating in the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement. Its technical account of solar-viewer safety explains why laboratory competence and supply-chain traceability matter. The key question is not simply whether the glasses look dark or carry a claim, but whether the product and seller can be verified.

Tests and claims that do not establish safety

  • A flashlight or phone flash: It does not reproduce the Sun’s spectrum or intensity and cannot verify compliance.
  • A UV flashlight: A consumer UV light cannot establish full-spectrum performance, infrared protection, filter uniformity, or structural integrity.
  • A phone or camera exposure test: Automatic exposure is not a safety instrument.
  • Darkness alone: A counterfeit or defective filter can look dark without providing the required protection.
  • “It worked last eclipse” or “NASA approved”: Past use does not prove present condition or authenticity. NASA safety advice is not a product-certification category.
  • A familiar logo or brand name: Counterfeiters can copy branding; verify the actual seller and purchase path.
  • Staring at the Sun to test a pair: Prolonged exposure defeats the purpose of eye protection. Limit any solar check to the brief glance described above.

None of these shortcuts replaces traceable provenance and documented product testing.

Can you reuse old eclipse glasses?

AAS says viewers may be reused if they are less than 10 years old, the manufacturer’s products were tested by a properly accredited laboratory and shown to conform to ISO 12312-2, and the filters remain undamaged. Some older warnings to discard viewers after three years or limit viewing to three minutes are outdated for newer compliant viewers in excellent condition. That does not make every old pair safe: unknown provenance, poor storage, or any damage is reason to replace it. Follow any product-specific instructions that apply to your pair.

What not to substitute for eclipse glasses

  • Ordinary sunglasses: Even very dark sunglasses are not safe for direct solar viewing. Stacking sunglasses, camera filters, or household materials is not a substitute.
  • Welding equipment: AAS describes fixed-shade welding filters of shade 12 or higher as transmitting a sufficiently small percentage of sunlight, with shades 13–14 as the practical viewing range. Do not improvise with an unknown welding filter. Adjustable or auto-darkening helmets may be set incorrectly, may not darken enough, or may react too slowly.
  • Optical equipment: Eclipse glasses worn over your eyes do not protect you when looking through binoculars, a telescope, or a camera lens at the Sun. Those devices need a secure solar filter over the front opening. Never use a small solar filter screwed onto the rear eyepiece; it can be exposed to concentrated sunlight. See AAS’s equipment warnings.

How to view the eclipse if you cannot verify your glasses

Use indirect projection and look at the projected image, not through the device or aperture. Options include a pinhole projector, a colander, a straw hat, crossed fingers that form small openings, or the changing pattern of sunlight beneath a leafy tree. A purpose-built solar projector is another option. The National Eye Institute describes safe indirect viewing. Never point binoculars, a telescope, or another magnifying optical device at the Sun without a properly installed front-aperture solar filter.

When glasses can come off during a total solar eclipse

For unaided viewing, glasses may be removed only during the brief period of totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright photosphere. Keep them on through every partial phase; remove them only after the bright face has disappeared, and put them back on immediately when the bright Sun begins to reappear. Outside the path of totality there is no safe naked-eye interval. An annular eclipse never reaches totality, so viewers must use solar protection throughout direct viewing. Cameras, telescopes, and binoculars still require their own properly mounted front-aperture filters.
