Check the public page, not just your CMS preview. Fetch the URL as a crawler would, inspect its Open Graph tags and image, then verify the link in the social network where you will post it. A third-party checker is useful for finding metadata problems, but the destination platform’s inspector or an unpublished draft is the final authority because crops and card layouts differ.
What a link preview actually uses
When someone shares a URL, the platform fetches the publicly available page and reads metadata from the response. The resulting card may include a title, description and image. Your CMS editor can show one value while the published HTML sends another, especially when metadata is inserted only after client-side JavaScript runs.
Test the exact public URL, including its canonical path and any redirects. A page behind authentication, a staging firewall or crawler-blocking security rule may look correct in your browser while returning no usable metadata to a sharing bot.

og:title— the headline supplied for the card.og:description— supporting text, when the destination displays it.og:image— the image URL the crawler should retrieve.og:url— the URL associated with the object.og:type— commonlyarticlefor editorial pages.
Also check ordinary document title and description fields because services differ in which fields they display. The image URL must be absolute, publicly reachable and served with a normal image response; an image that requires a login, signed browser session or blocked request cannot become a reliable preview.

A repeatable pre-share test
- Publish or expose the page. Use the final public URL. If it is still private, you are testing your browser session rather than the crawler’s view.
- Inspect the raw response. View the delivered HTML source or use a command-line HTTP client. Search the response for the Open Graph tags and confirm that the intended values are present in the initial HTML.
- Run an Open Graph checker. Paste the URL into a reputable preview validator. Review the fetched title, description and image URL, then open the image URL itself. A checker can reveal exactly what it retrieved and may render a simulated card.
- Examine the composition. At the destination’s actual preview, make sure the subject remains visible, embedded text is readable and no important edge is likely to be cropped. Do not assume one universal aspect ratio or safe area.
- Use the destination’s own check. Open the platform’s URL inspector when it provides one, or paste the link into an unpublished post and inspect the draft. Treat that result as decisive.
- Test the intended share format. A URL/article share is not the same as uploading an image file. LinkedIn documents those as separate flows, so test the one you will actually publish.
- Recheck after edits. If you changed tags or the image, ask the platform to fetch the URL again through its available inspection tool. Cache behavior differs, so do not promise an immediate refresh.
Inspect the page yourself before using a checker
Browser source check
- Open the public page in a private browser window.
- Choose View Page Source (not only the Elements panel).
- Find
og:image,og:titleandog:description. - Copy the image URL into a new private-window tab and confirm it loads without credentials.
The source view matters because a crawler may not execute the same JavaScript as your normal browser. If the tags appear only after hydration, put the critical metadata in the server-rendered response.
Command-line response check
This command prints response headers and the first part of the HTML. Follow redirects so you test the final public page:

Then fetch the HTML and search it locally:

How to judge the image itself
Composition and legibility
- Keep the focal subject away from extreme edges where a card crop may remove it.
- Check small text at the size shown in the destination draft; text that is readable in an editor may disappear in a compact card.
- Look for accidental browser chrome, placeholder artwork or a generic site logo.
- Confirm that the image’s orientation and subject still make sense when resized.
These are visual checks, not a universal dimension rule. Preview layouts vary by service, device and share type. Compare the real draft rather than optimizing for a single number copied from another platform.

Platform verification: what counts as final
Native inspector or draft composer
A third-party checker reads tags and may draw a helpful approximation, but it cannot guarantee the destination’s crop, typography or layout. Use the destination’s own inspector when available. Otherwise paste the URL into a draft and stop before publishing. This catches differences caused by platform-specific parsing and cached data.
LinkedIn’s two different share paths
For LinkedIn, decide whether you are sharing an article URL or uploading an image directly. The documented article-share flow fetches the URL’s metadata; a direct image share uses an uploaded asset and follows a different path. Do not use requirements for one flow as proof about the other.

LinkedIn’s Images API documentation describes JPG, GIF and PNG uploads and a limit of fewer than 36,152,320 pixels. That is an API asset constraint, not a universal Open Graph recommendation for organic link cards.
Troubleshooting missing or incorrect previews
The image is absent
Confirm that the delivered HTML contains og:image, that its value is an absolute URL and that the URL loads without a cookie or login. Check robots and security controls for crawler blocking. Also verify that the tag is in the document head and not malformed or duplicated by a template.
The checker shows a different image or text than the CMS
Trust the fetched source, not the editor display. Inspect the public response and correct the template, server-side rendering or URL selection that produced the wrong tag. Purge or re-fetch the destination after the correction.

The checker looks right but the live card is wrong
Use the platform-native inspector or draft as the deciding test. A checker’s simulated card is only an approximation, and platform crops can differ.

An old card remains after an update
Cached metadata is a plausible cause. Submit the URL again through the platform’s available refresh or inspection control, then check a new draft. Cache lifetime and refresh behavior are platform-specific; avoid assuming that a change appears instantly.
The page works for me but not for crawlers
Test in a private window and with the command-line requests above. Remove authentication requirements, permit the relevant fetch, and ensure redirects end at a publicly accessible HTML response. If metadata depends on client-side code, render it in the initial response.
An image upload is rejected
Check the destination’s documented upload rules for the exact API or share flow. For LinkedIn’s Images API, use JPG, GIF or PNG and keep the asset below the documented 36,152,320-pixel ceiling. That rule does not establish a preferred size for every link preview.

Once the metadata is correct, capture the public page at the viewport and theme you expect readers to see. Compare captures after template changes, but remember that a screenshot of the page is not the same thing as a social card: the platform still fetches metadata and applies its own layout.

Reliability and cost checks
- Test the URL from outside your logged-in browser session.
- Record the exact image URL and page version so a later comparison is meaningful.
- Separate metadata validation from visual screenshot testing; passing one does not guarantee the other.
- Re-run the destination-native check after changing title, description or image.
- For automated captures, use waits or network-idle rules when content loads late, and a selector wait when the key element is asynchronous.
The goal is not to make a checker’s mockup look perfect. It is to establish that the public crawler can retrieve the intended metadata and image, then confirm how the actual destination presents them.

Can I test a preview for a page that is not published?
Only if the crawler can reach it at a public URL without authentication or blocking rules. A local or login-protected page cannot be tested as the destination will see it.
Does a correct og:image guarantee the image will appear?
No. The image must also be reachable by the crawler, and the destination may cache metadata or apply its own parsing and crop.
Should I optimize for one standard preview-image size?
No universal size is established here. Check the destination’s actual draft or inspector and keep important content visible across the likely crop.
