The right way to capture a website in a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) depends on where the browser content is rendered and whether your organization allows screen capture. In Citrix, Browser Content Redirection can draw website content on your local endpoint rather than inside the remote session, so an in-session screenshot may show only the browser frame. Citrix documents a Snipping Tool for redirected content on specific Windows client and VDA versions; for Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), capture protection may deliberately block screenshots. Identify your VDI product, client, and policy before choosing a method.
First identify the VDI setup and capture policy
VDI is not one uniform environment. A screenshot method that works in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops may fail in AVD, and client operating system, connection app, browser redirection, and administrator policy can all change what gets captured. Before troubleshooting shortcuts, establish these details:
- VDI platform: Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, AVD, or another product.
- Connection path: the endpoint operating system and client app or browser used to connect.
- Where the site is drawn: inside the remote session, or on the endpoint through a feature such as Citrix Browser Content Redirection (BCR).
- Policy: whether local capture, in-session capture, clipboard transfer, and saving files are permitted.
If your organization intentionally blocks capture, do not try to work around that restriction. Ask your administrator for an approved export, report, or documentation method. The steps below cover documented Citrix and Microsoft cases; they do not establish behavior for every VDI vendor or enterprise configuration.
Citrix: capture redirected content with the Citrix Snipping Tool
Check version and policy prerequisites
Citrix’s documentation for its Snipping Tool in the Citrix Virtual Desktop Assistant specifies a Windows client, VDA 2607 LTSR or later, and Citrix Workspace app for Windows 2607 LTSR or later for capturing overlay and redirected content. These are product- and version-specific requirements, not a general minimum for all Citrix screenshots. Confirm the versions actually deployed in your organization rather than assuming that a newer or older client behaves identically.

If redirected content is missing from the capture, Citrix says to check that the Screenshot Redirected Content policy is enabled in Web Studio, verify the version prerequisites, and check whether App Protection blocks screenshots. Policy changes may require administrator access.
Take and save the screenshot
- Open the Citrix Virtual Desktop Assistant and select Snipping tool.
- Select New.
- Choose the region to capture. The documented tool can capture a selected area, one full screen, or all screens, and supports a delayed capture.
- Save the result as PNG or BMP, or send it to the clipboard if your organization permits that transfer.
If the Snipping Tool is unavailable or the environment does not meet the stated prerequisites, do not assume that a missing menu means the site is broken. Ask your Citrix administrator whether the required client, VDA, and policy configuration are deployed.
Citrix Browser Content Redirection: capture from the endpoint
Why in-session screenshots can miss the page
Citrix documents a specific BCR failure mode: when redirection is active, Print Screen or Win+Shift+S inside the session can capture only the Internet Explorer or Chrome window frame. The website itself may be drawn on the endpoint rather than in the remote desktop image, leaving the in-session capture without the page content.
Use the documented endpoint workaround
- Focus the Citrix Desktop Viewer toolbar.
- On the endpoint, press Win+Shift+S and select the area containing the redirected website, or press Print Screen to capture the endpoint desktop.
- On a dual-monitor setup, note that Citrix says endpoint Print Screen captures both displays.
- Crop or redact unrelated visible information before sharing the image.
This workaround captures the local client desktop, not just a clean browser window. Use it only if endpoint capture is allowed by your organization’s policy. If a shortcut is disabled or the result is blocked, check with the administrator instead of trying another method to evade the restriction.

Azure Virtual Desktop: determine whether protection is blocking capture
Understand the two protection modes
Microsoft documents two host-side AVD screen capture protection settings. Block screen capture on client blocks local-device capture of applications running in the remote session. Block screen capture on client and server also prevents tools and services inside the VM or Cloud PC from capturing the screen. A blocked or hidden capture can therefore be the intended policy outcome, not a faulty keyboard shortcut.
Microsoft explicitly cautions that “Screen capture protection doesn’t provide Digital Rights Management (DRM)-level protection.” It also describes broader controls such as clipboard, drive, and printer redirection settings, and watermarking as a deterrent that can help trace a session. These controls serve different purposes; a watermark is not a way to restore screenshot access.
Check supported connection paths with your administrator
Enforcement requirements depend on endpoint and connection path. Microsoft’s documentation describes configuration for AVD VMs or Windows 365 Cloud PCs through Intune or Group Policy and enforcement by Windows App or the Remote Desktop client on Windows and macOS endpoints. Mobile and browser access have separate requirements: Android and iOS/iPadOS use Intune mobile application management (MAM) app protection policies; browser access on Windows is documented for Microsoft Edge for Business with its work profile and an app protection policy, plus Conditional Access enforcement.
Microsoft lists specific minimum app versions and operating-system prerequisites, so consult its current AVD screen capture protection documentation or ask your administrator to confirm compatibility for your precise client and OS. The documentation also describes macOS compatibility limitations, including possible interference with Teams sharing and incomplete enforcement by some native applications. Do not assume a protection setting works identically in every app or connection mode.

Save or transfer the image without confusing clipboard policy with capture
Taking a screenshot and moving it out of the session are separate operations. A screenshot can be created successfully but fail to paste because clipboard redirection is restricted. In AVD, administrators can configure transfer direction and permitted data types, including images; these settings apply to session hosts. If image paste fails, ask whether that direction or image data has been disabled.
Citrix Workspace app for HTML5 documents copying image clips between a virtual desktop and endpoint with standard copy-and-paste shortcuts. It supports formats including BMP, PNG, JPEG, and GIF. Citrix warns that an image clip larger than 2 MB may make the session unresponsive because of bandwidth constraints. Its mobile and tablet clipboard guidance says image formats are not supported there. These are specific to the documented Citrix client scenarios, not universal VDI size or format limits.
If clipboard transfer is unavailable, use an administrator-approved way to save or export the capture. Avoid sending screenshots through personal email, unapproved cloud storage, or a camera pointed at the display; those approaches can expose data and may violate policy.
Choose the capture method that matches the rendering and policy

Troubleshoot common screenshot failures
The screenshot shows a blank area or browser frame
Likely cause: In the documented Citrix BCR case, website content is rendered on the endpoint and is not part of the in-session image. Next step: If permitted, use Citrix’s endpoint capture workaround; otherwise ask the administrator for an approved capture method.

The Citrix Snipping Tool is missing or redirected content is absent
Likely cause: The deployed Windows Workspace app or VDA may not meet Citrix’s stated 2607 LTSR-or-later prerequisites, the Screenshot Redirected Content policy may be off, or App Protection may block capture. Next step: Have the administrator verify versions and Web Studio policy.
A capture is blocked on AVD
Likely cause: A host-side screen capture protection setting is active, or the connection path does not meet the documented enforcement requirements. Next step: Confirm the setting and client compatibility with the administrator. If capture is intentionally restricted, request an approved export rather than attempting to bypass it.
The image will not paste into the endpoint
Likely cause: Clipboard transfer direction or image data is disabled, or the client does not support the format. In the documented Citrix HTML5 scenario, clips larger than 2 MB may make the session unresponsive; mobile and tablet clipboard guidance does not support image formats. Next step: Check the policy and client-specific guidance, and use an approved save or export route.
The captured desktop includes other windows or monitors
Likely cause: Endpoint Print Screen can capture more than the remote browser; Citrix notes that it captures both displays on a dual-monitor setup. Next step: Select a region with Win+Shift+S when allowed, then inspect and redact the image before distribution.

Practical reliability and cost notes
For screenshots of a page inside a VDI session, the most reliable starting point is the capture method that matches where the browser is rendered and the policy that governs the session. A local API request is a different workflow: it can be convenient for public URLs, but it does not inherit your remote browser’s logged-in state or access to internal sites. For repeat captures, agree on a permitted storage and transfer route before automating the process. In Citrix HTML5, account for the documented warning about clips larger than 2 MB; for AVD, verify clipboard policy separately from capture permissions.
