Use a Pipedream trigger to start a browser step, navigate with Puppeteer, wait for the page state you need, save a screenshot, and pass the resulting file or bytes to storage or another app. A schedule is suitable for recurring snapshots; an app event can capture a page when something specific happens. The example below uses Pipedream’s browser support and a temporary /tmp file, then shows alternatives for element captures, hosted browsers, and a managed screenshot API.
Choose the workflow shape first
Pipedream workflows are event-triggered sequences of steps. Start by deciding what should cause the capture and what the next step should receive.
| Decision | Use this when | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule trigger | You need hourly, daily, or weekly snapshots | The timer starts each independent run. |
| App or HTTP event | A deployment, form submission, alert, or webhook should trigger a shot | Pass the target URL and any identifiers in the event payload. |
| Browser code | You need custom waits, clicks, headers, cookies, or JavaScript | You control the browser sequence, but must maintain it. |
| Managed screenshot action | You only need a URL, format, and perhaps a selector | The older Pipedream GetScreenshot listing should be confirmed in your account before relying on its fields. |
Build a scheduled Puppeteer screenshot
1. Create the trigger
- In Pipedream, create a new workflow.
- Choose Schedule as the trigger and set the interval or cron expression. For event-driven captures, choose the relevant app trigger or an HTTP/webhook trigger instead.
- Add a Run Node.js code step after the trigger.
2. Add the browser step
This component follows the documented Pipedream community pattern: launch a browser, open a page, navigate, wait, and write a PNG under /tmp. Package names and component syntax can change, so use the browser package currently offered by your Pipedream workspace.
import puppeteer from "@pipedream/browsers";
export default defineComponent({
async run({ steps, $ }) {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
const targetUrl = "https://example.com";
await page.goto(targetUrl, {
waitUntil: "networkidle2",
timeout: 60000
});
// Optional settling delay; it is not a universal readiness guarantee.
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 2000));
await page.screenshot({
path: "/tmp/example-page.png",
fullPage: true,
type: "png"
});
return {
url: targetUrl,
path: "/tmp/example-page.png",
width: 1440,
height: 900
};
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
});
The returned path is useful only within the current workflow run. Temporary files can disappear after the step, so follow this code with a storage, email, HTTP, or database step that consumes the file before the run ends. If your next action expects bytes rather than a path, read the file and encode it in the format that action documents.

3. Make the URL configurable
For a schedule, keep a fixed URL in an environment variable or a Pipedream data store. For a webhook or app event, read the URL from the event payload and validate it against an allowlist before navigating. Avoid accepting arbitrary internal URLs from untrusted callers; a browser step that can reach private network addresses can create a server-side request risk.
const targetUrl = steps.trigger.event.url;
if (!targetUrl || !/^https:///i.test(targetUrl)) {
throw new Error("Provide an HTTPS URL");
}
Wait for the page state that matters
A fixed ten-second pause appears in one community example, but it is only an example delay. A fast page wastes time; a slow or client-rendered page can still be incomplete. Prefer a condition that represents visual readiness.
Wait for a selector
await page.goto(targetUrl, { waitUntil: "domcontentloaded", timeout: 60000 });
await page.waitForSelector("main article", { timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: "/tmp/ready.png", fullPage: true });
Wait for a known application state
await page.waitForFunction(
() => document.querySelector("[data-rendered='true']"),
{ timeout: 30000 }
);
Use a short settling delay after the selector only when fonts, charts, or animations visibly need it. For pages that never become network-idle because of analytics or live connections, use domcontentloaded plus a selector instead of waiting forever for idle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCapture the whole page, viewport, or one element
Full-page image
fullPage: true captures the document’s scrollable height. Very long pages can produce large images and consume more memory; consider a viewport shot or a PDF for extremely long reports.

Viewport shot
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 720, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.screenshot({ path: "/tmp/viewport.webp", type: "webp" });
Viewport dimensions determine responsive layout. Set them explicitly so scheduled runs do not change when the browser default changes.
Element screenshot
const card = await page.waitForSelector(".pricing-card", { timeout: 30000 });
await card.screenshot({ path: "/tmp/pricing-card.png", type: "png" });
An element capture is useful for a chart, invoice, or product card. The selector must identify a visible element; hidden, zero-size, or off-screen elements can result in an empty or failed capture.
Make dynamic pages reproducible
- Animations: inject CSS to disable transitions before the shot.
- Lazy images: scroll through the page or wait for image completion before capturing.
- Consent dialogs: click an accept button only when your collection policy permits it.
- Authentication: use Pipedream’s connected-account or environment-secret storage for credentials; do not hard-code tokens.
- Time zones: set the browser context or generate the page in the intended locale if dates affect the rendering.
await page.addStyleTag({ content: `
*, *::before, *::after {
animation: none !important;
transition: none !important;
caret-color: transparent !important;
}
` });
Send the image to a later Pipedream step
The downstream action determines whether you should pass a path, a buffer, or base64. A documented hosted-browser workflow exports screenshot bytes as base64 and decodes them into a temporary file in a later code step. That is a transfer pattern, not a requirement of every current integration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
import fs from "node:fs";
export default defineComponent({
async run({ steps }) {
const encoded = steps.capture.$return_value.imageBase64;
if (!encoded) throw new Error("Screenshot data was missing");
const buffer = Buffer.from(encoded, "base64");
const path = "/tmp/from-base64.png";
fs.writeFileSync(path, buffer);
return { path, bytes: buffer.length };
}
});
Upload that path immediately to your object store or pass it to an email/file step. Include a deterministic filename containing the target and capture time, and log the URL, viewport, readiness condition, and final byte count for debugging.

Use a hosted browser when local browser code is inconvenient
A Pipedream community example from 2022 shows Browserless with Puppeteer: set viewport dimensions, navigate remotely, select an element, take a screenshot, and export the result. This is useful when you want a remote browser runtime, but the example is not evidence of current Browserless pricing, limits, or syntax. Recheck the provider’s current documentation and configure its API key through Pipedream authentication rather than source code.
Try Pipedream’s managed GetScreenshot action
The GetScreenshot integration listing documents a URL input, PNG/JPEG/PDF choices, optional email delivery, a DOM-element selector, extra parameters, and API-key authentication. The listing is old, so open the action catalog in your account and verify that the action, field names, output type, and limits are still available before building a production workflow. Store the API key in the connected-account configuration.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try when you want an HTTP screenshot service: it removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; and its response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Navigation timeout
Confirm the URL resolves from a public network, increase the navigation timeout within a sensible upper bound, and replace a network-idle wait with a selector wait if the site keeps long-lived connections open.
Blank or partially rendered image
Wait for the specific content selector, disable animations, and ensure lazy-loaded images have entered the viewport. Check that the page did not redirect to a login, consent, or bot-check screen.
Selector not found
Inspect the rendered DOM, account for iframes, and use a stable attribute such as data-testid rather than a generated class. Increase the selector timeout only after confirming the element eventually exists.

File missing in a later step
/tmp is temporary. Upload or read the file in the same run and pass the resulting bytes or URL onward; do not assume a later invocation can access it.
Workflow runs overlap
A slow page can outlast the schedule interval. Set a concurrency policy, use a lock or idempotency key, and include the target URL and capture timestamp in the destination name so retries do not silently overwrite the wrong image.
Unexpected cost or quota use
Browser steps consume workflow runtime and hosted services have their own terms. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers, use a cache TTL where appropriate, and choose asynchronous jobs or bulk capture for larger batches.
Production checklist
- Trigger and target URL are explicit and validated.
- Viewport, format, and full-page versus element scope are fixed.
- Readiness uses a selector or application state, not an arbitrary delay alone.
- Secrets live in Pipedream authentication or environment storage.
- Temporary files are transferred before the run ends.
- Retries, overlap, redirects, login states, and bot checks are observable.
- Destination names are idempotent and include capture metadata.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Pipedream workflow take a screenshot from an incoming webhook?
Yes. Use an HTTP or app-event trigger, validate the URL from the event payload, then pass it to the Puppeteer step instead of using a fixed scheduled URL.
What is the safest wait condition for a client-rendered page?
Wait for a stable selector or application state that proves the required content is present, then add only a short settling delay if fonts, charts, or animations still need time.
Should I store screenshots in /tmp between workflow runs?
No. Treat /tmp as run-local temporary storage and upload or forward the image during the same invocation.
