Authenticate before capturing, then wait for proof that the protected page—not an authentication challenge—has loaded. For HTTP Basic Authentication, one approach is to include URL-encoded credentials in the initial URL where the browser supports it. This guide shows a Python Selenium workflow, explains screenshot scope and browser caveats, and covers safer alternatives when URL credentials are unsuitable.
What you need before capturing
Selenium WebDriver controls a real browser through a language-neutral API. To run a capture, install Selenium’s language binding, a supported browser, and a matching driver; Selenium’s getting-started guide explains the driver lifecycle and first navigation: Selenium WebDriver: Getting Started. The examples below use Python and Chrome.
This method is specifically for HTTP Basic Authentication, where the browser receives an authentication challenge before it can access the protected page. A form login, SSO flow, client certificate, or bearer-token scheme is different; URL username and password credentials do not automatically authenticate those systems.
Authenticate to the initial URL with Python
For an initial navigation, some browsers accept credentials embedded in the URL. Encode the username and password so reserved characters do not change the URL’s meaning. Replace the example host, credentials, and CSS selector with values for the protected site.

driver.get(url)
# Choose a marker visible only after successful authentication.

EC.visibility_of_element_located(
(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main.dashboard")
)
)
driver.save_screenshot("dashboard.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
The wait is essential: navigation can finish before the application has rendered, and a successful request is not proof that the intended authenticated view is on screen. Selenium’s documentation describes screenshot capture for the current window, while its first-script guidance demonstrates navigation, waits, and cleanup: Selenium WebDriver documentation.
Keep credentials out of source and logs
Do not commit credentials to a repository or print the credentialed URL in CI logs. Load secrets from environment variables or a secret manager, and ensure failure diagnostics never include the password. URL encoding protects URL syntax; it does not make credentials safe to expose. If the browser or CI tooling records the navigation URL, prefer an authentication mechanism that avoids putting secrets in that URL.
Choose the screenshot scope
WebDriver screenshots are taken from the active browsing context. Choose the API based on whether you need the visible window, a particular element, or the whole document. The exact full-document method depends on driver support.
| Capture scope | Python call | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Current window or viewport | driver.save_screenshot("page.png") |
Capture what is currently visible in the browser window. |
| One element | element.screenshot("panel.png") |
Capture a located component, such as an authenticated account panel. |
| Full document | driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("page.png") |
Use only when the selected driver supports this full-page method. |
Selenium’s Python API also exposes screenshot data as Base64 or PNG bytes, which can be useful when a test needs to store or process the image without first writing a file. See the Python WebDriver API reference for available methods.

Handle redirects, later navigations, and Safari
A credentialed URL is documented as an option for the first protected URL, but it should not be treated as a universal authentication mechanism. BrowserStack documents three approaches for Basic Auth in Selenium: credentials in the URL for the first protected URL, a JavaScript-based technique for later navigations, or dismissing the authentication popup with JavaScript when that is the required behavior. See its guide to handling authentication popups for the relevant workflow details.
In BrowserStack’s documented workflow, Safari on macOS does not support Basic Authentication through username and password in the URL; it recommends header injection instead. Browser and environment behavior can differ, so verify the approach in the browser and platform you actually run. If a redirect crosses to another origin, check whether that origin also requires authentication and whether your chosen method applies there.
Prove the capture is the authenticated page
Before saving an image, check a page-specific condition that distinguishes the intended view from a login challenge, access-denied page, or redirect destination. A dashboard heading, authenticated navigation control, or known result element can serve as the marker. A generic wait for page load is weaker because it confirms document readiness, not successful authentication.

- Wait for a visible marker that exists in the authenticated application.

- Switch to the intended window or tab if the workflow opened more than one browsing context.
- Capture the window, element, or full document using a method supported by the selected driver.
If the marker does not appear, gather safe diagnostics such as the final URL, page title, and presence or absence of a non-sensitive element. Do not log credentials or a URL containing them.

Troubleshoot common capture failures
The screenshot shows a browser authentication prompt
The browser did not complete Basic Auth before capture, or the credentialed-URL method is unsupported in that browser or navigation. Confirm that the site uses HTTP Basic Auth, try the browser-appropriate authentication method, and wait for an authenticated page marker rather than capturing immediately after navigation.
The screenshot shows a login page or an unexpected destination
The site may use form authentication or SSO rather than Basic Auth, or a redirect may have reached another origin that needs its own authentication. Inspect the final URL and title, then implement the site’s actual authentication flow and verify the final application marker.
The wait times out
The CSS selector may not match the authenticated page, the element may be hidden, or authentication may have failed. Check the selector in the intended page, use a marker that becomes visible only after sign-in, and inspect safe diagnostics. Do not simply remove the wait: that can produce a plausible-looking image of the wrong page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe full-page method is missing or fails
Full-document screenshot methods are driver-specific. Check the API support for the browser and driver in use; if it is unavailable, capture the viewport or a specific element instead, or use a supported full-page capture workflow for that driver.

The image is from the wrong tab or window
Screenshot calls apply to the current browsing context. Select the intended window or tab before checking the authenticated marker and taking the screenshot.
Credentials appear in logs or artifacts
Remove logging of the credentialed URL, rotate any exposed secret, and move credentials into environment variables or a secret manager. Review CI output and stored artifacts for accidental disclosure.

If you need a screenshot from an HTTP-authenticated page without managing a Selenium browser and driver, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts URL captures and supports custom headers, cookies, user agents, and Authorization, so you can supply the authentication material appropriate to your page. Do not place secrets in source-controlled code or expose them in logs.
For example, use a Basic authorization header assembled from credentials held securely by your application:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://protected.example.test/dashboard
-H "Authorization: Basic BASE64_ENCODED_CREDENTIALS"
-o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The service removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Performance and reliability choices
For Selenium, the main reliability cost is not the screenshot call itself but waiting for the correct authenticated state. A page-specific wait avoids both premature captures and arbitrary long sleeps. Keep a bounded timeout, and make its failure actionable by recording safe context such as title and final URL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For recurring captures, manage browser and driver versions together, choose the screenshot scope that yields only the image data you need, and ensure cleanup runs even when authentication or a wait fails. For full-document output, confirm driver support before building it into a workflow. When the authentication scheme or browser differs—especially Safari on macOS—validate the method in that exact environment rather than assuming URL credentials will transfer unchanged.
When to use Selenium versus an API
Selenium is a good fit when the capture is part of browser testing or must follow application interactions in a real browser. A screenshot API can avoid installing and managing a local browser stack for straightforward URL captures, while an MCP server can make capture available directly to an AI agent. The decisive factors are the authentication scheme, control needed over browser interaction, supported screenshot scope, and how secrets are supplied and protected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does URL-embedded authentication work with every browser?
No. Support varies; BrowserStack specifically documents that Safari on macOS does not support this approach in its workflow and recommends header injection.
Can I use this method for a form login or SSO?
No. HTTP Basic Auth and application form or SSO authentication are different schemes and need their respective browser or network setup.
