Chrome DevTools can save the visible viewport, an entire page, a selected rectangle, or a specific DOM element without installing an extension. Open DevTools, press Command+Shift+P on macOS or Control+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, search for screenshot, and choose the capture command that matches your target. Device Mode also exposes viewport and full-page capture controls, while the Network and Performance panels can record screenshots during loading or a performance trace.

Chrome changes menu wording occasionally, so use the current command shown in your build. The workflows below cover the capture types and the situations in which each is useful.

Open DevTools and the Command Menu

  1. Open the page in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools with Command+Option+I on macOS or Control+Shift+I on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. You can also right-click the page and choose Inspect.
  3. Open the Command Menu with Command+Shift+P on macOS or Control+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS.
  4. Type screenshot. The menu filters to available capture actions. Select the command rather than guessing a keyboard shortcut; labels can differ between Chrome releases.

Capture the visible viewport

Use this method when you need exactly what a visitor can see at the current viewport and scroll position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open DevTools and activate Device Mode by clicking the phone-and-tablet icon, or press Command+Shift+M on macOS or Control+Shift+M on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS.
  2. Set the desired device preset, width, height, orientation, and device pixel ratio. A responsive custom size is useful for desktop layouts; a preset is useful when documenting a mobile breakpoint.
  3. Open the Device Mode More options menu (the three-dot control in the device toolbar).
  4. Choose Capture screenshot. Chrome downloads an image of the visible viewport.

The procedure and device-frame options are documented in Chrome’s Device Mode guide. If the screenshot should include a phone or tablet bezel, enable Show device frame before capturing. The frame is available only for device configurations that support it.

Capture a full-size page

A full-size screenshot is different from a viewport screenshot: it includes page content below the visible fold.

  1. Turn on Device Mode and configure the viewport you want represented.
  2. Open More options in the device toolbar.
  3. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
  4. Wait for the download to finish, then open the image to check lazy-loaded sections, sticky elements, and any content that appears only after scrolling.

Chrome’s instructions for viewport, full-size, and device-frame captures are in the Device Mode documentation. Very long or unusually complex pages can produce large files; if content is missing, let the page finish loading and trigger any scroll-dependent content before repeating the capture.

Capture a rectangular area

Use an area capture for a chart, hero section, error message, or any region that is not a single DOM element.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep DevTools docked inside the browser window. The area command does not work when DevTools is undocked.
  2. Open the Command Menu with Command+Shift+P (macOS) or Control+Shift+P (Windows, Linux, ChromeOS).
  3. Search for screenshot and choose Capture area screenshot.
  4. Drag from one corner of the desired rectangle to the opposite corner. Release to capture the selected region.

If you cannot find or activate the command, dock DevTools again using its Customize and control DevTools menu, then repeat the steps. The docking limitation and command workflow are described in the Command Menu guide.

Capture one DOM node

Node capture is preferable when you need a component’s exact box, including content that extends below the current viewport.

  1. Open the Elements panel.
  2. Click the element in the DOM tree, or use the element picker to select it on the page. Confirm that the intended node is highlighted.
  3. Open the Command Menu and search for node or screenshot.
  4. Choose Capture node screenshot. Chrome saves the selected node as an image.

Chrome 89 release notes describe node screenshots that include the full node, even when part of it is below the fold. That is release-history information, not a promise that every modern page layout will rasterize identically. See the Chrome 89 DevTools notes and the DOM inspection guide.

Record screenshots during page loading

Network screenshots answer a diagnostic question: what did the page look like at each point in its load sequence, and which requests were occurring then?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open DevTools and select Network.
  2. Open Network panel settings and enable Capture screenshots.
  3. Leave the Network panel focused, clear the log if necessary, and reload the page.
  4. Use the screenshot thumbnails in the Network panel to inspect visual states at different load moments. Select a thumbnail to correlate it with network requests.

This is a sequence of load-state images, not a single polished page export. The Network features reference documents the setting and reload workflow.

Capture screenshots in a Performance recording

Performance screenshots let you connect each recorded frame with scripting, rendering, layout, and paint activity.

  1. Open the Performance panel.
  2. Enable the Screenshots checkbox in the recording options.
  3. Start recording, interact with the page or reload it, then stop the recording.
  4. Inspect the screenshots track. Select a frame to examine the corresponding visual state alongside the timeline.

Unlike a one-off capture, this produces a frame-by-frame visual record for the duration of the trace. See the Performance features reference.

Make captures reproducible

  • Set the same viewport every time: record width, height, orientation, and device scale before comparing images.
  • Wait for state changes: dismiss consent dialogs, allow fonts and images to load, and trigger expandable or lazy sections before a full-page capture.
  • Preserve useful context: use a device frame only when the frame is part of the deliverable; otherwise it reduces the page area available in the image.
  • Use node capture for components: it avoids uncertain crop coordinates and remains tied to the element’s DOM boundary.
  • Use Network or Performance only for diagnostics: their thumbnails are valuable for timing analysis, but they are not substitutes for a final-design export.

Common problems and fixes

The screenshot command is missing

Open the Command Menu and search both screenshot and node. Node capture appears only when an element is selected in Elements. Device commands appear when Device Mode is active. If labels still differ, update Chrome where your organization’s policy allows and check the current Chrome for Developers instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Area capture does nothing

Area capture requires docked DevTools. Re-dock the tools from the three-dot menu, then run Capture area screenshot again.

The full-page image is incomplete

Wait for network activity to settle, scroll through the page once to trigger lazy content, close transient overlays, and repeat the full-size capture. A page that changes while Chrome is stitching its image can also produce inconsistent sections.

The wrong element was captured

Return to Elements, verify the blue highlight covers the intended node rather than a parent or child wrapper, and run Capture node screenshot again. For a visual region spanning several unrelated nodes, use area capture instead.

Network thumbnails are empty

Enable Capture screenshots before reloading and keep Network focused during the reload. Existing requests do not gain screenshots retroactively.
