Short answer: you usually cannot take a normal screenshot of a screen that an app deliberately protects. On Android, the app can mark its window with FLAG_SECURE; Android then blocks screenshots and display capture, so a black image or blank result is expected. The dependable, legitimate solution is to use the app’s own export, share, download, print, receipt, or PDF function—or request an authorized copy from the provider. Capture workarounds are unreliable, can expose sensitive data, and may violate platform or app rules.
Why the screenshot is blocked
Android’s FLAG_SECURE window flag tells the operating system not to allow screenshots and not to show that window on a non-secure display, such as ordinary casting. It is commonly used for banking, password managers, fraud-prevention screens and other sensitive content. When Android receives a capture request for a protected window, the result can be blank or black rather than an image of the page.
This is normally a deliberate privacy and security control, not a defect in your phone. Protection can cover hardware-button screenshots, screen recording, mirroring and other capture paths that depend on Android’s display compositor. Older devices are not perfectly uniform: Android’s security documentation says that on Android 11 (API 30) and lower, FLAG_SECURE worked reliably on “around 70% of the devices.” That figure is a reliability caveat, not a promise that an unprotected-looking result is safe to keep or share.
What you should do first
- Check the app’s menu. Look for Share, Export, Download, Print, Save as PDF, Receipt or Send a copy. These commands produce an app-approved representation instead of defeating the capture control.
- Try the same record in a less-sensitive view. A transaction-history page, statement screen or document viewer may provide an export even when the live authentication screen is protected. Do not assume that a different view is permitted; follow the app’s terms.
- Ask the provider for an accessible copy. For financial, health, identity, workplace, school or DRM content, support can often issue a statement, receipt, transcript or other authorized record.
- Check administration settings. If the phone or app is managed by an employer or school, an administrator policy may enforce the block. Only the administrator can tell you whether capture is allowed.
What Android 14 screenshot detection means
Android 14 lets an app register a per-activity callback when the user takes a screenshot through the supported hardware-button combination. The callback tells the app that the event occurred; it does not provide the screenshot image. Android also states that this API does not detect screenshots taken by ADB or instrumentation tests. That omission is about notification, not permission: an ADB command being undetected does not make protected pixels available.

In practice, a protected app can both prevent the image and, on supported Android 14 paths, learn that a screenshot gesture was attempted. Do not interpret the callback limitation as a supported bypass.

Google Play requires apps to respect another app’s FLAG_SECURE declaration and bars apps from facilitating or creating workarounds to bypass it. The accessibility exception is narrow: an accessibility tool must not transmit, save or cache protected content for access outside the user’s device. Installing an accessibility service or recorder solely to defeat a block is therefore not a general-purpose answer.
When you are testing your own app
Authorized testing is different from trying to copy somebody else’s protected data. Use a debug or test build, a test account and synthetic data. Remove or conditionally disable FLAG_SECURE only in the documented test configuration, and keep the production setting unchanged. Your automation provider may offer a test-only option; for example, Sauce Labs documents a bypass setting for automated testing. That is a specialized testing feature, not a consumer fix for a banking, messaging or DRM app.

- Record who authorized the test and which build, device and Android version are in scope.
- Use non-production credentials and redact screenshots in bug reports.
- Verify that the release build still protects the sensitive activity before shipping.
- Do not distribute a modified APK or a root hook as a way for other users to defeat the control.
Troubleshooting a black or blank result
The screenshot file is completely black
That is the expected symptom of a secure window. Test the phone’s screenshot function on a harmless, unprotected screen. If ordinary screens work, stop changing capture apps and use the protected app’s export or support route.
The recorder shows a black rectangle but audio works
Audio and video follow different paths. A working soundtrack does not mean the protected pixels are available. End the recording, delete any sensitive file created during the test and request an authorized copy.
ADB produces an image, but the app says it did not detect a screenshot
Android’s screenshot-detection API does not cover ADB or instrumentation captures. The lack of a callback is not an authorization signal and does not override FLAG_SECURE. For your own software, switch to the vendor’s documented test build or configuration.

Casting shows the phone but not this app
FLAG_SECURE is intended to prevent the window from appearing on non-secure displays. Use an in-app export or ask the provider for a copy rather than trying another mirroring receiver.
The app used to allow screenshots
Protection can be limited to particular activities, accounts, releases or managed-device policies. Update history, a work profile and an administrator rule can all change behavior. Check the app’s current help or support channel; do not infer that a previous unprotected screen authorizes capture now.
Choose the remedy by purpose
- Proof of payment or an account record: download the statement, receipt or transaction export.
- A document you need to submit: use Print or Save as PDF so the resulting file has usable text and provenance.
- A bug report for your own app: use a test build and synthetic data, then restore production protections.
- Accessibility: ask the provider for an accessible document or an accessibility setting that does not copy protected content outside the device.
- Suspected policy enforcement: contact the employer, school or device administrator.

A black screenshot usually means Android is honoring the app’s secure-window policy. There is no universal, reliable consumer bypass. Export, print, share or request the information through an authorized channel; reserve test-only configuration changes for software you own or are explicitly authorized to test.

Can the app see the screenshot I tried to take?
On Android 14, an app can receive a callback for screenshots made through the supported hardware-button combination, but the callback does not include the image. The API does not cover ADB or instrumentation captures.
Is photographing the display an acceptable workaround?
It is a camera photo rather than a screenshot, may expose surrounding private information, and can violate terms. Obtain an authorized copy instead.
