The most dependable way to capture an Android TV or Google TV screen is Android Debug Bridge (ADB). With ADB enabled and the television reachable from your computer, run adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png. Android saves a PNG stream directly to your computer. If direct streaming is inconvenient, save the image on the TV and copy it with adb pull.
Remote shortcuts and phone-remote apps can help you reach the right screen, but neither is a universal screenshot exporter across every brand and software build.
What you need before taking a screenshot
- An Android TV or Google TV device with developer/ADB settings exposed by its software build.
- A computer with the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) command-line tools installed.
- A network connection between the computer and TV for wireless ADB, or a device-specific wired/local ADB arrangement when wireless debugging is unavailable.
- Permission to approve the computer’s authorization prompt on the television.
Android Developers document wireless debugging for TV devices running Android 13 (API level 33) or newer. Menu labels and whether the option appears vary by manufacturer and build, so do not assume every television has the same path.
Method 1: Capture directly to your computer with ADB
1. Enable developer and ADB settings
- Open the TV’s Settings and locate the developer options supplied by that device. Enable USB debugging, wireless debugging, or the equivalent ADB setting shown by the manufacturer.
- If wireless debugging is offered, note the TV’s network address and port. Keep the TV and computer on a network that allows them to reach each other.
- Leave the TV awake and display the exact screen you want to capture.
There is no single cross-brand menu path. Some builds require first revealing developer options; others expose wireless debugging directly. Follow the labels on your model rather than a phone-specific tutorial.

2. Connect from the computer
In a terminal, connect using the address and port displayed by the TV:
adb connect TV_IP_ADDRESS:PORTReplace the placeholder with the values shown on your television. When an authorization dialog appears on the TV, approve the computer. Check the connection with:
adb devicesYour TV should appear with a device identifier and an authorized status. If it is listed as unauthorized, look at the TV for the approval prompt and reconnect after accepting it.
3. Write a PNG directly to disk
adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.pngThis command runs Android’s screencap shell utility and streams the PNG to the computer’s current directory. Android Developers describe screencap as “a shell utility for taking a screenshot of a device display.” Open screen.png locally to verify the result.

Navigate with the remote between captures and run the same command again, using a different filename:

adb exec-out screencap -p > playback-screen.pngFor repeatable support documentation, keep the TV at a known resolution and record the screen name alongside each file. The command captures the current display, including the full TV viewport rather than only an application window.
Method 2: Save on the TV, then pull the file
Use this two-command alternative when shell streaming is blocked or awkward in your terminal:
adb shell screencap /sdcard/screen.png
adb pull /sdcard/screen.pngThe first command writes the PNG to shared storage on the TV. The second copies it to the computer’s current directory. To avoid accidentally reusing an old file, remove it first or choose a unique name:

adb pull /sdcard/screen.png android-tv-screen.pngIf the pull succeeds but the image is stale, the capture command may have failed or you may be looking at an older destination file. Check the terminal output and use a new filename.
Use your phone as a remote (navigation only)
The Google TV app can act as a phone or tablet remote for supported Android TV devices. In the app, tap Remote, choose the TV, and complete pairing. The phone and TV generally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for Wi-Fi pairing.

This is useful for opening the exact menu or playback frame before you run ADB. The official help instructions do not make the phone app a screenshot exporter, so pair it for navigation and use ADB for the image.
Can you press Power plus Volume Down?
Google’s generic Android screenshot instructions for phones mention Power plus Volume Down and, on some phones, a Screenshot option in the power menu. Those instructions are not evidence of a universal Android TV shortcut. A particular television or remote may provide a built-in capture command, but button layouts, menus and software builds differ.
If your model documents a shortcut, test it and check where that device stores the resulting file. Do not assume the same combination works on another brand.
When ADB is unavailable: external HDMI capture
An HDMI capture device can be a fallback when software capture is blocked. Connect the TV’s output to compatible capture hardware and save a frame through the computer’s capture software. Compatibility depends on the television, output path, resolution and HDCP. Streaming services and protected content may produce a blocked or blank signal, so verify compatibility before buying hardware. This method is more involved than ADB and is not a universal workaround.

Troubleshooting ADB screenshots
adb is not recognized
Install the Android SDK Platform-Tools and open a new terminal whose PATH includes the directory containing adb. Running the command from that directory also works.

adb devices shows nothing
- Confirm ADB or wireless debugging is enabled on the TV.
- Check that the computer and TV can reach each other on the network; guest Wi-Fi and client isolation can prevent this.
- Reconnect with the exact address and port shown by the TV.
- For wired or local setups, use the connection method supported by that model; not every TV exposes the same USB arrangement.
The device is unauthorized
Wake the TV and look for the RSA authorization prompt. Approve it, optionally allow the computer permanently, then run adb devices again. If no prompt appears, disconnect and reconnect ADB and inspect the TV’s developer settings.

Verify that the TV is still connected and that the display is awake. Try the file-based workflow, then inspect the pulled file’s size and open it locally. A protected video surface may be restricted even when ordinary menus capture correctly.
The image is black, cropped or from the wrong moment
Run the command after the target screen has finished drawing. Some video surfaces enforce capture restrictions. For a wrong or stale image, delete the old destination, use a new filename and confirm the TV is showing the intended screen before capturing.
Wireless debugging keeps disconnecting
Keep the TV awake during the capture, avoid changing networks, and reconnect using the currently displayed port. Power-saving behavior and manufacturer network settings can end an idle session.

Where does the ADB screenshot go?
With adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png, it goes to the computer’s current terminal directory. With the two-step method, it is first written to /sdcard/screen.png on the TV and then copied wherever adb pull is run.
Does this work on Google TV?
