Gemini CLI can inspect an existing screenshot and coordinate a browser workflow to capture a rendered page, but it does not render HTML and CSS by itself. For a screenshot you already have, reference the local image with @path/to/file.png. To review your own HTML/CSS, start the project’s development server, open its local URL in a supported browser automation workflow, and capture the viewport, an element, or the full page.
Choose the right workflow
| What you want to do | Use | What produces the image |
|---|---|---|
| Review a screenshot already saved on your computer | Gemini CLI file reference, such as @screenshots/current-page.png |
The CLI’s file-reading and image-capable tools provide the image for analysis. |
| Preview and capture HTML/CSS running locally | A development server plus Gemini CLI’s browser agent, or a separately configured Playwright MCP workflow | A browser renders the page; the browser automation tool captures it. |
These are different tasks. Referencing a screenshot does not open or render your project. Conversely, launching a local server does not automatically give Gemini CLI a browser view of the page.
Give Gemini CLI an existing screenshot
From the project directory, start Gemini CLI and include the screenshot path in your prompt. For example:
Review @screenshots/current-page.png for visual layout issues. Describe what is visibly wrong and suggest changes to the relevant HTML/CSS files.
The @ syntax includes local file content in the prompt and invokes the documented file-reading workflow. The Gemini CLI tools reference describes read_file as supporting text, images, audio, and PDF, and documents read_many_files for reading multiple files. Image support can depend on the installed release and active tools; if the CLI cannot inspect a particular image, ask it to report that limitation rather than assuming it saw the screenshot. See the Gemini CLI tools reference.

Ask for a review you can act on
State what matters in the image and, if relevant, name the files Gemini should consider. Useful requests include:
- Identify visible spacing, alignment, typography, contrast, or responsive-layout problems.
- Compare the screenshot with a specific design goal or reference image you provide.
- Suggest changes to named HTML or CSS files, but ask for explanations before approving edits.
- Ask it to distinguish what it can see from what it is inferring; a screenshot does not reveal the underlying DOM or CSS rules.
Gemini CLI can propose code changes, but those changes are not the same as a visual verification. Apply an approved change, refresh the browser page, and capture a new screenshot to check its effect.
Render and capture your local HTML/CSS project
- Inspect the project first. Ask Gemini CLI to read the project’s instructions and package scripts, then use the development-server command documented by that project. The correct command depends on its framework and configuration; there is no universal server command.
- Start the server and note its local URL. Keep the server running while you use the browser workflow. If it reports a different port or a startup error, use the URL and instructions it actually provides rather than assuming a default.
- Open the local page with browser automation. Use Gemini CLI’s documented browser agent if it is available in your environment, or configure Playwright MCP separately. The browser—not Gemini CLI’s text interface—renders the HTML and CSS.
- Capture the part of the page relevant to the change. Capture the viewport for what is currently visible, a specific element for a component, or the full page when below-the-fold layout matters.
- Ask for visual feedback, then iterate. Provide the screenshot to Gemini CLI or use the browser agent’s visual-analysis capability if available. Make a change, reload, and capture again at the viewport size that matters.
The project-server sequence is a practical workflow built from the CLI’s documented file and shell tools and browser capabilities; the official documentation does not prescribe one server command for every project.

Use browser screenshots and accessibility snapshots for different questions
A screenshot is best for visual appearance, including layout, canvas, and chart content. It does not reliably expose text structure or identify interactive controls. Playwright recommends accessibility snapshots when the task is to understand page structure, read text, or locate elements. Use the screenshot to judge appearance and the accessibility snapshot to inspect structure or find a target to interact with. See Playwright’s MCP screenshot documentation.
Use Gemini CLI’s browser agent
The current Gemini CLI browser-agent documentation lists Chrome version 144 or later as a prerequisite. It describes the underlying chrome-devtools-mcp server as bundled with Gemini CLI and launched automatically. Tool availability and setup can change between releases, so inspect what your active installation exposes with /tools or /tools desc, commands documented in the tools reference.
The browser agent’s optional visual screenshot-analysis subagent has a separate authentication constraint: the documentation says it requires API key or Vertex AI authentication and is unavailable when using “Sign in with Google.” That limitation concerns the optional visual-analysis feature, not the general idea of passing an existing local image to the CLI.

Check sandbox and host-browser compatibility
Browser automation depends on where Gemini CLI is running. The current browser-agent documentation notes that Chrome is unavailable inside container sandboxes; the agent is disabled there unless configured to use an existing host Chrome session. Do not try to bypass browser safeguards or blocked URL schemes. If local browser access is unavailable, use a compatible host-browser setup or configure an independent Playwright MCP workflow.
Capture with Playwright MCP
If you configure Playwright MCP rather than relying on Gemini CLI’s browser agent, its browser_take_screenshot tool supports a viewport by default, a chosen element, or the full scrollable page. The documented example for a full-page capture is:
browser_take_screenshot { fullPage: true, filename: "homepage.png" }
Use target with an element reference or selector to capture one element. A full-page capture uses fullPage: true and cannot be combined with target. To save an image, provide filename; without it, the image is returned inline by default.

| Choice | Behavior | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | Captures the current visible browser area by default. | Checking above-the-fold layout or a specific responsive viewport. |
| Element | Pass an element reference or selector as target. |
Reviewing a card, form, navigation area, or other component in isolation. |
| Full page | Set fullPage: true; it cannot be combined with target. |
Checking content below the fold and the overall page flow. |
| Image type | PNG, JPEG, or WebP; PNG is the default when no filename extension determines the type. | Choose a format that fits the intended use and output workflow. |
| Scale | css uses CSS-pixel dimensions by default; device uses device pixels and device-pixel ratio. |
Use CSS scale for layout comparison at CSS dimensions, or device scale when a higher-resolution image is needed. |
These are Playwright MCP options, not promises that every Gemini CLI browser-agent tool exposes the same controls. Consult the active tool description before relying on a particular parameter.
Approve commands and edits deliberately
Gemini CLI documents ! followed by a command as shorthand for manually triggered shell execution. Its security behavior requires manual confirmation for shell execution and file mutations; inspect the exact command or proposed diff before approving it. The official tools reference states, “You can directly trigger key tools manually using shorthand syntax.” File access, shell execution, and browser actions are mediated by the CLI’s security policy, sandbox settings, and trusted-folder configuration. Avoid granting broader access than the project workflow needs.
Troubleshooting
- Gemini says it cannot read the screenshot: Check that the path is correct relative to the CLI’s working directory and that the image format is supported by the installed release and active tools. Try a supported image or ask Gemini CLI to report which file-reading tools are available.
- The browser agent is missing or disabled: Check
/toolsand/tools desc, confirm the installed Chrome version meets the documented Chrome 144-or-later prerequisite, and check whether the environment is a container sandbox without access to host Chrome. - Visual screenshot analysis is unavailable: The optional visual-analysis agent requires API key or Vertex AI authentication and is not available with “Sign in with Google,” according to the current browser-agent documentation. Use another supported authentication route or inspect a screenshot through an available image-capable workflow.
- The local URL does not load: Confirm the project’s development server is still running, use the URL and port it printed, and check whether the server binds to an address reachable from the browser session. The right fix depends on the project and environment; the CLI documentation does not define one universal server setup.
- The screenshot shows stale or incomplete content: Reload the page after the server finishes compiling, wait for the relevant component or data to appear, and capture again. If the page relies on content below the fold, use a full-page capture rather than a viewport-only image.
- A full-page capture option conflicts with an element target: Playwright documents that
fullPage: truecannot be combined withtarget. Capture the element and full page as separate shots. - You need readable text or a reliable way to locate a control: Use an accessibility snapshot for structure and element discovery; screenshots are for visual inspection, not interaction targeting.
- A shell command or edit is waiting for approval: Review the displayed command or diff before confirming. Decline anything whose effects you do not understand.
Or skip the browser setup
For a remote page, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It accepts a URL and can capture PNG, JPEG, or WebP; the example below saves a WebP response. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options.

Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Those capabilities can help when you need a remote capture without setting up a local browser workflow; they do not replace a browser session for reviewing an unhosted local page.

FAQ
Can Gemini CLI render HTML and CSS without a browser?
No. A browser or another rendering engine must render the page. Gemini CLI can coordinate commands and browser tools, then help assess a captured result.
Can I ask Gemini CLI to take a screenshot of a page I have not hosted publicly?
Yes, if the browser workflow can reach the local development server. Whether that works depends on the CLI’s browser and sandbox setup.
Should I use an element screenshot or a full-page screenshot?
Use an element capture to focus on a component and a full-page capture to inspect content and layout below the fold. With Playwright MCP, those options cannot be combined in one capture.
