Then use page.screenshot() for a viewport or full-page image, or locator.screenshot() for one element. For automated test artifacts, configure Playwright Test to save screenshots on failure.
What a Docker container needs before Playwright can capture a page
A screenshot call runs in the browser environment available to the Playwright process. The container therefore needs four compatible parts:
- Node.js to run the script or test runner.
- The Playwright package in the project or image.
- The browser binary you intend to launch, such as Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit.
- The operating-system libraries and dependencies required by that browser.
The official Playwright Docker image bundles browser binaries and their system dependencies, but it does not install the Playwright npm package for your project. The Docker guide says the package must be installed separately. See the official Playwright Docker documentation.
Pin the Docker image tag and use the matching Playwright package version. Playwright browser executables are tied to Playwright versions; a mismatch can prevent the package from locating the browser it expects. After upgrading Playwright, reinstall its browsers if necessary. Check the official Docker page for current image tags and base-image guidance, since those details change over time.

Choose an image strategy
Use the official Playwright image
This is convenient when you want browsers and system dependencies ready in the container. Install your project’s Playwright package separately, and ensure its version matches the image version. Pin the full image tag in your Dockerfile rather than relying on a moving tag.
The documented image runs as root by default, which disables Chromium’s sandbox. Playwright says that may be acceptable for trusted end-to-end tests, but it explicitly does not recommend using the image to visit untrusted websites. Treat the browser’s security posture as part of your container design, not as a property solved by the screenshot call.
Build from a Node base image
A custom image lets you choose a base and install only the browser you need. Install Playwright as a project dependency, then install the browser and operating-system dependencies through its CLI. For example, for Chromium:
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
Use the browser name your scripts actually launch. Browser installation is version-coupled to the installed Playwright package, so run the install step after changing that package’s version.
Check the Linux distribution before choosing Firefox or WebKit
Playwright’s Docker guidance says its Firefox and WebKit builds use glibc; Alpine and other musl-based distributions are unsupported for those builds. If your suite needs Firefox or WebKit, choose a supported glibc-based environment rather than assuming a small Alpine image will work.
Write a screenshot to a file
Here is a minimal Node.js script using Chromium. Install the package and browser in the image first, then run the script from your project directory:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The relative path is resolved from the process’s working directory inside the container. If the screenshot must survive container exit, write it to a mounted volume or copy it out as part of your CI artifact workflow. A file written only to a disposable container filesystem can disappear when that container is removed.
The same capture method works with other browser types if installed and supported:

const { firefox } = require('playwright');
const browser = await firefox.launch();
Choose Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit based on what your project needs to test. Installing and launching a different browser does not change the basic screenshot API.
Capture a viewport, full page, or one element
Viewport screenshot
page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }) captures the page’s current viewport. Set the viewport before navigation or capture if the output must use a particular size:
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
Full-page screenshot
Set fullPage: true to capture the entire scrollable document rather than only what is currently visible:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
A full-page image can be much taller and larger than a viewport capture. Use it when the whole document is the artifact you need; for visual checks, consider whether a focused viewport or element image makes changes easier to diagnose.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Element screenshot
Use a locator to save just a component, such as a header, product card, or chart:
await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
Locator screenshots are useful when the test concerns one region and the rest of the page contains unrelated content. The locator must resolve to the intended element; if the page is still rendering or the selector is wrong, the capture can fail rather than produce the image you expected.
Choose output format, resolution, and destination
Playwright’s screenshot APIs support image type, quality and scale options. Use a path when you want Playwright to write an image file. Omit the path when you want image bytes returned for processing or attaching elsewhere. Consult the Playwright screenshots guide and the Page API reference for current option details.
- Format: choose PNG, JPEG, or another supported type according to the API options and downstream tooling. Lossy formats can reduce file size but may be unsuitable when exact pixel comparisons matter.
- Quality: quality applies to supported lossy image formats. It is not a substitute for choosing an appropriate output format.
- Scale: CSS scale produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; device scale uses device pixels and can create larger high-DPI images. Select the scale that matches the consumer of the artifact.
- Destination: save to a path on a mounted output directory for persistence, or omit the path to handle the returned bytes in memory.
For PDF output, use Playwright’s PDF API rather than treating a screenshot as a document export. Its behavior and options differ from image capture; consult the Page API reference for the supported PDF controls.

Keep captures stable enough to interpret
Pages that load live data, animations, timestamps, or rotating content can produce different images across runs. For a direct screenshot call, first wait for the content your task depends on—for example, use a locator wait or a page readiness condition—then capture. Avoid adding a fixed delay unless the page has no better readiness signal.
Locator screenshot options include controls for disabling animations and injecting CSS for the capture. Use these selectively: masking an animated or dynamic area can make comparisons more stable, but it also changes what the image represents. Make any screenshot-only styling or masking explicit in the test so readers of the artifact understand what was hidden or altered.
Save screenshots from Playwright Test
Automatic artifacts for failed tests
If the goal is to retain screenshots when CI tests fail, use the test runner’s screenshot option rather than adding a manual call to every test. In playwright.config.js, configure:
module.exports = {
use: {
screenshot: 'only-on-failure',
},
};
Playwright Test also documents on and on-first-failure modes. Choose a mode according to how many artifacts you want: capturing every test creates more files, while failure-focused modes keep the output narrower. See TestOptions for the current setting behavior.

Configure your CI system to retain the test output directory after the container exits. The screenshot option controls capture; CI artifact retention controls whether those files remain available after a job completes.
Visual regression with a screenshot assertion
For baseline comparisons, Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot(). It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing, which helps avoid capturing a page while it is still changing. Screenshot assertions support full-page capture and controls such as animation disabling, masking dynamic regions, and thresholds. The assertion belongs to the Playwright Test runner; a standalone script using only the Playwright library does not provide this test assertion automatically. See PageAssertions.
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Keep the browser and runtime environment consistent between baseline creation and comparison. Differences in browser version, fonts, viewport, or device scale can affect pixels even when the site has not meaningfully changed. Review the Playwright browser guidance at Browsers when deciding which engine your test environment should use.

Fix: pin a compatible image and dependency version, then run the Playwright browser install step again after upgrading the package. Confirm that the script launches the same browser you installed.
Browser launch fails because a shared library is missing
Likely cause: a custom base image does not include the browser’s operating-system dependencies.
Fix: install the browser dependencies with the Playwright CLI, such as npx playwright install --with-deps chromium, or use the official image with the matching Playwright package.
Firefox or WebKit does not run on Alpine
Likely cause: the image uses musl rather than glibc. Playwright’s Docker guidance says Firefox and WebKit builds require glibc and do not support Alpine/musl.
Fix: use a glibc-based image for those browsers, or use Chromium if that meets the test requirement and the environment supports it.
The screenshot file is missing after the job ends
Likely cause: the path was written inside the container’s temporary filesystem, which was removed with the container.
Fix: write the file into a mounted volume or configure CI to collect the output directory as an artifact before cleanup.
The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or inconsistent
Likely cause: navigation completed before the relevant content rendered, the selector did not identify the intended element, or the page contains dynamic content.

Fix: wait for the relevant locator or readiness signal, verify the viewport and target selector, and use animation or masking controls only when they reflect the purpose of the capture.
Chromium runs without its sandbox
Likely cause: the documented container runs as root by default, which disables Chromium’s sandbox.
Fix: follow the official Docker security guidance for your use case. The documented root setup is described as potentially acceptable for trusted end-to-end tests, not for browsing untrusted websites.

Cost, reliability, and artifact choices
Local Playwright screenshots have no per-capture API charge from Playwright itself, but they do consume container resources and require maintaining a compatible browser environment. Full-page images and high-DPI output can increase file size and artifact storage. Failure-only screenshots are a practical way to limit test artifacts when routine passing runs do not need images.
For reliable CI results, pin versions, install the required browser dependencies in the image, wait for meaningful page readiness, and preserve artifacts outside the container’s ephemeral filesystem. If a screenshot is used as evidence for a failure or as a visual baseline, record enough context—browser, viewport, and relevant test configuration—to interpret differences accurately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the official Playwright Docker image include the Playwright npm package?
No. It includes browser binaries and system dependencies, but the project must install the Playwright package separately.
Can I save screenshots from a Docker container after it exits?
Yes. Write them to a mounted volume or have CI collect the output directory as an artifact before removing the container.
Does Playwright’s visual screenshot assertion work without Playwright Test?
No. toHaveScreenshot() is an assertion from the Playwright Test runner.
