For batch captures, run a separate webkit2png process for each URL and schedule those processes with a bounded Python worker pool. Give every job its own output directory or explicitly unique output filename. The available project material does not establish a supported, safe in-process parallel API for sharing Qt or WebKit objects.
This is a legacy-tool approach, not a guarantee of compatibility: the PyPI entry’s 0.8.2 release dates to May 12, 2010, and the original maintainer warns that the original tool no longer works on recent macOS versions. Check the exact fork and host environment before building a large batch around it.
What concurrent capture means for python-webkit2png
webkit2png is a command-line webpage screenshot utility built around WebKit and Qt4, according to its PyPI project entry. That entry lists version 0.8.2, released May 12, 2010. The age matters: the sources do not establish a current compatibility matrix for Python, Qt, WebKit, operating systems, or forks.
A subprocess example in the project discussion invokes the executable once for each URL. If Python calls that function in a normal loop, captures happen one after another. Concurrency comes from scheduling several independent executable processes, not from that sequential loop.

A Qt event-loop sketch also appears in the discussion, but its author describes it as untested. The available examples do not establish that a Qt application, renderer, or WebKit page can safely be shared across concurrent threads. Treat process isolation as the practical pattern; do not infer that a shared-renderer design is supported.
Use a bounded process pool
The example below uses Python’s ProcessPoolExecutor to cap the number of simultaneous captures. Each task launches one webkit2png executable and gives it a private working directory, which prevents different jobs from writing same-named default output files into one shared directory. It assumes that the installed executable accepts a URL as a positional argument and writes its default image into the current directory; confirm that behavior with the help text for the exact executable or fork you have installed.
Save as capture_batch.py. The script reads one URL per line from urls.txt, creates a separate output folder for each numbered job, and stops waiting for a child process after the configured timeout.
from concurrent.futures import ProcessPoolExecutor, as_completed
from pathlib import Path
import subprocess
URL_FILE = Path("urls.txt")
OUTPUT_ROOT = Path("captures")
WORKERS = 3
TIMEOUT_SECONDS = 90
def capture(job):
number, url = job
job_dir = OUTPUT_ROOT / f"job-{number:06d}"
job_dir.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
# If this installation requires a virtual X display, use:
# command = ["xvfb-run", "-a", "webkit2png", url]
command = ["webkit2png", url]
result = subprocess.run(
command,
cwd=job_dir,
capture_output=True,
text=True,
timeout=TIMEOUT_SECONDS,
check=False,
)
return number, url, job_dir, result.returncode, result.stdout, result.stderr
def main():
OUTPUT_ROOT.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
urls = [line.strip() for line in URL_FILE.read_text().splitlines() if line.strip()]
jobs = list(enumerate(urls, start=1))
with ProcessPoolExecutor(max_workers=WORKERS) as pool:
futures = [pool.submit(capture, job) for job in jobs]
for future in as_completed(futures):
try:
number, url, folder, code, stdout, stderr = future.result()
if code == 0:
print(f"OK job {number}: {url} -> {folder}")
else:
print(f"FAILED job {number}: {url} (exit {code})")

python capture_batch.py
The example deliberately uses one worker setting for the whole batch. The URL count may be large, but the number of active browser processes should remain limited. Keep the URLs in a file rather than entering thousands of arguments on one shell command line.
Set output naming for your installation
The command-line options and default output behavior can differ by version or fork. Check the installed command’s help before relying on flags. If it offers an output-name or output-directory option, set a distinct name derived from the job number or a sanitized host-and-path identifier. Keep the per-job working directory as an extra safeguard, especially if output naming is implicit.
Do not use a URL directly as a filename: URLs can contain characters that are invalid in paths, and two different URLs can map to the same simplified name. A numeric job identifier avoids collisions; record the URL-to-folder mapping in a manifest if you need to find captures later.
Why the pool is bounded
Each worker starts a separate browser-rendering process. Raising WORKERS therefore increases simultaneous processes and associated CPU, memory, and network demand. There is no benchmark in the available material that identifies an optimal worker count or a speedup for a particular machine or target set. Begin conservatively, observe whether the host and target sites cope, and increase only when the workload remains stable.

For thousands of URLs across many hosts, also consider the effect on those websites: a large parallel burst can look like aggressive traffic. Use a smaller worker count or divide the input into batches if captures fail, destinations throttle requests, or the host becomes overloaded. A worker limit controls simultaneous jobs; it is not a per-domain rate limiter.
Headless Linux and Xvfb
A community report says the program worked on a server without an X display when launched through xvfb-run. That is a reported workaround for an environment needing a virtual display, not a universal compatibility guarantee or an authoritative platform support statement.
On a host where the executable fails because no display is available, try adding the wrapper to the subprocess command:
command = ["xvfb-run", "-a", "webkit2png", url]
The -a option requests an automatically selected display from Xvfb’s wrapper. This requires xvfb-run to exist in the environment and depends on the specific installation’s command behavior. If it still fails, inspect the child process’s standard error and confirm the virtual-display components and the chosen webkit2png build are installed and compatible.

Choosing between process isolation and Qt code
| Approach | What the available evidence supports | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Separate executable processes | A project-discussion example invokes the executable with subprocess.call; Python can schedule such invocations in a bounded pool. |
Each job has process overhead, but failures and output can be isolated per job. |
| Shared in-process Qt/WebKit objects | A discussion contains an explicitly untested event-loop sketch; it does not establish thread-safety or safe shared-renderer concurrency. | It may appear to avoid process launches, but the available evidence is insufficient to recommend it as a safe concurrent design. |
| Move to a newer browser automation tool | The original project maintainer points readers toward newer tools such as Playwright. | Migration changes the implementation and requires checking that the replacement meets the capture and deployment requirements. |
Reliability and compatibility checks
- Verify which executable runs. Confirm the path and help output of the installed
webkit2png; a fork may expose different options or behavior from the old PyPI entry. - Test a small sample first. Run one known URL, inspect the generated image, then try a few varied hosts before queueing a large batch.
- Keep failures visible. The example captures standard output and error and checks the exit code. Preserve these logs when diagnosing a bad URL, missing runtime component, or display problem.
- Make reruns deliberate. A failed capture does not create a valid screenshot merely because the process returned. Decide whether to retry after inspecting the error; avoid an automatic tight retry loop.
- Separate compatibility from concurrency. A worker pool can launch multiple processes, but it cannot make an incompatible WebKit/Qt/Python combination work.
Troubleshooting common failures
“webkit2png” cannot be found
Python cannot start the child because the executable is not available on PATH. Install or activate the environment containing the intended executable, or replace the first command element with its full path. Check that the Python process and your interactive shell are using the same environment.
The process exits but no usable image appears
Inspect the exit code and captured standard error, then run the exact command manually in that job’s working directory. Confirm the output naming and location for your installed version; the example assumes default output in the current directory and does not pretend that all forks use the same output flags.
The capture stalls or exceeds the timeout
The script raises a timeout from subprocess.run once a child has exceeded the configured wait. Reduce the workload or investigate the specific destination and environment. A timeout is a failed job, not proof that concurrency itself is broken; the sources do not establish universal timeout behavior for every build.
It fails on a headless host
If the error indicates the absence of an X display, try the reported xvfb-run wrapper. If the wrapper is unavailable or the failure persists, verify the host’s display setup and the executable’s own dependencies rather than assuming Xvfb resolves every issue.

It fails on recent macOS
Paul Hammond, the original project maintainer, warns: “It no longer works, as recent versions of MacOS have removed the functionality it relied on. You should use newer tools such as Playwright instead.” This warning is scoped to the original tool and recent macOS; it is not a compatibility statement for every fork or operating system. For another host, verify the exact fork and runtime instead of generalizing from this macOS warning.

Does the old PyPI release prove that every python-webkit2png fork is incompatible?
No. The listed 0.8.2 release is the PyPI project entry, while forks can differ. The exact fork and its runtime need to be checked separately.
Can I run the pool example on Windows?
The example uses Python’s standard process-pool and subprocess interfaces, but the availability and behavior of the legacy executable and its WebKit/Qt dependencies are separate platform-compatibility questions.
