Use Playwright’s full-page screenshot mode. From PowerShell, the shortest one-off command is playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.png https://example.com (put the URL in the position accepted by your installed CLI version). In a script, call Playwright’s screenshot API with fullPage: true. That option captures the complete scrollable document rather than only the visible viewport.
This guide shows a PowerShell-first workflow, a repeatable Playwright script, scale and layout choices, troubleshooting, and alternatives. It also explains when a hosted API is easier than maintaining a browser runtime.
What “full page” means
A normal screenshot records the browser viewport—the pixels currently visible. A full-page screenshot expands the capture to the page’s scrollable height, producing one image that includes content below the fold. Playwright documents this behavior explicitly: when fullPage is true, it captures the full scrollable page instead of the current viewport.

Fixed headers, sticky navigation, animations, consent dialogs and lazy-loaded sections can affect what appears, so reliable captures require a little preparation.
Prerequisites in PowerShell
- Windows PowerShell or PowerShell 7.
- A Playwright-supported browser runtime and the Playwright CLI or a language binding such as Node.js, Python or .NET.
- A URL that the browser can reach, plus permission to capture it.
- A writable output directory.
Playwright’s installation commands vary by CLI, language and release. Install the binding and its supported browser using the current instructions for your chosen Playwright package, then verify that the command you intend to use is available in PowerShell:

Get-Command node -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

If a command is not found, finish that runtime’s official setup before debugging the screenshot itself. CLI flags can also change between installed versions, so check playwright-cli --help on your machine.
Fastest one-off capture with the Playwright CLI
For a single page, run the documented full-page form from PowerShell:

Use an absolute output path when the current directory is uncertain:
$out = Join-Path $PWD 'full-page.png'
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=$out https://example.com
The CLI writes the image directly to the filename. Depending on your installed version, the URL may be a positional argument or an option; use the help output if the command reports an unknown argument. PNG, JPEG and WebP output are supported by the screenshot capability, subject to the flags exposed by your version.
Confirm the file and dimensions
if (Test-Path $out) {
Get-Item $out | Select-Object FullName, Length, LastWriteTime
} else {
throw "Screenshot was not created: $out"
}
Open the result with Invoke-Item $out. A very tall image is expected for a long page; image viewers may scale it to fit the window.
Repeatable capture from a Playwright script
For tests, documentation builds or scheduled jobs, use the page screenshot API. The essential setting is fullPage: true. The following Node.js file can be launched from PowerShell and saves the returned image bytes to disk:

// full-page.mjs
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
const url = process.argv[2] ?? 'https://example.com';
const output = process.argv[3] ?? 'full-page.png';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 90_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: output, fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
console.log(`Saved ${output}`);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it from PowerShell:
node .full-page.mjs https://example.com .full-page.png
networkidle waits for network activity to settle, but some sites poll continuously or load advertising indefinitely. In those cases, use a targeted wait (for example, a selector that marks the content as ready) or a bounded delay rather than waiting forever.
Wait for a specific element or lazy content
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 90_000 });
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30_000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(1_000);
await page.screenshot({ path: output, fullPage: true });
Replace main with a selector that is meaningful for the target site. A fixed delay is a fallback; a selector or application-ready signal is generally more deterministic.
PowerShell patterns for batches and predictable filenames
Keep the browser process inside the script and pass URLs as arguments. A simple PowerShell loop can call the Node script for a small set of pages:
$pages = @(
'https://example.com/',
'https://example.com/about'
)
$i = 1
foreach ($url in $pages) {
$file = Join-Path $PWD ("page-{0:D2}.png" -f $i)
node .full-page.mjs $url $file
if (-not (Test-Path $file)) { throw "Missing output for $url" }
$i++
}
For larger jobs, reuse one browser and create a fresh page per URL instead of launching a new browser for every iteration. That reduces startup overhead and isolates cookies and page state when you need clean sessions.
Scale, format and viewport choices
CSS scale versus device scale
Playwright’s screenshot API lets you trade file size against pixel density. A device scale factor of 1 produces roughly one output pixel per CSS pixel. Higher device scale factors create sharper images for high-density displays but increase dimensions, memory use and file size. Choose the smallest scale that remains readable for your downstream use.
| Choice | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| CSS-sized output (scale 1) | Documentation, visual diffs, fast transfers | Less dense on a high-DPI display |
| Higher device scale | Print-like detail or retina review | Larger files and more memory |
| PNG | Text, diagrams and lossless comparisons | Usually the largest file |
| JPEG | Photographic pages where size matters | Lossy compression and artifacts around text |
| WebP | Modern web delivery with smaller files | Check that every consumer supports it |
Set a stable viewport
Responsive layouts change at breakpoints. Set an explicit width and height before navigation so captures are comparable. Full-page mode extends the page vertically; the viewport width still controls wrapping, columns and breakpoint behavior.

Long pages and memory
A very tall page can consume substantial memory while the browser lays it out and encodes the bitmap. Capture only the required element when a full document is unnecessary, reduce the device scale factor, or split an exceptionally long report into sections. Do not assume that a page that displays successfully will fit into one image at every scale.
Dynamic pages, consent dialogs and overlays
Cookie banners, newsletter prompts, chat widgets and sticky controls can obscure content or become part of the image. In a self-hosted Playwright script, handle them explicitly: click an accept button, hide a selector with injected CSS, or remove a widget after the page is ready. Keep selectors specific to the site and verify that dismissing a dialog does not remove legitimate content.
Lazy images may not load until they approach the viewport. Full-page capture often triggers layout for the full document, but sites differ. If images are missing, wait for the relevant image elements, scroll through the page before capture, or wait for a page-specific “all content loaded” signal. Animated content can produce different pixels on every run; disable animation with custom CSS when deterministic output matters.
When to use another automation layer
| Method | Best use | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright API | Repeatable scripts and tests | Explicit fullPage option and output controls |
Requires a Playwright runtime and browser |
| Playwright CLI | One-off PowerShell captures | Short --full-page command with a named file |
Behavior follows the installed CLI version |
| Chrome DevTools Protocol | Advanced Chromium integration | Low-level layout and screenshot control | Tip-of-tree protocol changes have no backward-compatibility guarantee |
| Selenium WebDriver | Existing Selenium estates | Established automation ecosystem | The cited documentation demonstrates element screenshots, not a PowerShell-specific full-page recipe |
Use CDP when you need Chromium internals that Playwright does not expose conveniently, and accept the additional version coupling. Keep Playwright for the ordinary full-document case.
Troubleshooting full-page captures
“Command not found”
Cause: the CLI is not installed or its executable directory is not on PATH.
Fix: complete the current Playwright CLI setup, open a new PowerShell session, and run Get-Command playwright-cli. If you use a language binding, invoke that language’s script instead.
The output is only the viewport
Cause: the full-page flag was omitted, misspelled, or unsupported by an older CLI.
Fix: confirm playwright-cli --help lists --full-page, then use the API form with fullPage: true.
Images or sections are missing
Cause: lazy loading, a race with client-side rendering, blocked resources or an early timeout.
Fix: wait for a meaningful selector, use a bounded additional delay, inspect failed network requests, and verify that the browser can access the asset URLs.

The page never reaches network idle
Cause: analytics, WebSockets or polling keep connections active.
Fix: navigate with domcontentloaded, wait for the content selector you need, then capture. Set a finite timeout so a broken page cannot stall a job.
Cookie or login state changes the page
Cause: a fresh browser context has no prior cookies, or a consent banner blocks interaction.
Fix: create an authenticated context only when authorized, supply the required cookies or headers, and handle consent before the screenshot. Never place credentials in a command that will be recorded in shell history.
PowerShell treats URL characters unexpectedly
Cause: unquoted query strings, ampersands or parentheses are interpreted by the shell.
Fix: quote the complete URL: 'https://example.com/search?q=one&sort=new'. Use --% only when you understand its effect on argument parsing; quoting is usually clearer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The image is too large or fails to encode
Cause: extreme page height combined with a high device scale factor.
Fix: use scale 1, reduce the viewport width if acceptable, capture a needed element, or split the document. Monitor process memory in scheduled jobs.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API for a one-request capture. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
PowerShell can call the API with curl.exe:
curl.exe -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" `
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY `
--data-urlencode "url=https://stripe.com" `
-o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options, including full-page capture, CSS-selector elements, device presets, retina scale, custom JavaScript and CSS, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDF output, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs and bulk capture.
The same request in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Self-hosted Playwright has no per-shot API charge, but you own browser installation, updates, CPU, memory, network failures and maintenance. A hosted service trades that setup for request pricing and service-specific limits. For either approach, record the URL, viewport, scale, timestamp and output format so a changed page can be distinguished from a changed capture configuration.

For production jobs, use finite navigation and selector timeouts, retry transient network failures with a limit, save diagnostic logs, and treat authentication, consent and bot challenges as explicit states rather than silently accepting a misleading image.
FAQ
Can PowerShell capture an entire scrolling webpage as one PNG?
Yes. Invoke Playwright’s CLI with --full-page or call the API with fullPage: true; both produce one image covering the scrollable document.
Does full-page mode create a PDF?
No. It creates an image. Use Playwright’s PDF features or ScreenshotNeo’s PDF endpoint when paginated, printable output is required.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does my full-page image contain a sticky header repeatedly?
A fixed or sticky element may remain attached during the full-document layout. Hide or restyle that element for the capture, or capture the main content element instead of the entire page.
Is a full-page screenshot the same as saving HTML?
No. It is a rendered bitmap at a particular viewport, browser state and time. It does not preserve links, text semantics or interactive behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule PowerShell full-page screenshots?
Yes. Run the Playwright CLI or Node script from Task Scheduler or another job runner, using absolute paths, finite timeouts and a writable output directory.
What should I do when a site blocks automation?
Respect the site’s access rules. A CAPTCHA or bot check is not something to bypass casually; record the failure and obtain authorized access or use an approved capture route.
