For a one-time full-page capture, use Firefox’s built-in Screenshots tool. Open the page, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux ( Command+Shift+S on macOS), then choose Save full page, Save visible, a region, or an element. Select Download to save a PNG or Copy to place it on the clipboard. This works without installing an extension and is the simplest way to capture content below the fold.
The right method depends on what you need: the current screen, an entire document, a fixed viewport from a terminal, or repeatable automated captures. The options below cover each case.
Choose the capture method first
| Need | Best route | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| One-time whole page or selected area | Firefox Take Screenshot | Point-and-click capture of the visible page, full document, region, or element; save or copy the image. |
| Terminal capture at a defined viewport | Chrome headless | Creates a PNG from a URL with --screenshot and --window-size. |
| Headless Firefox capture | Firefox command line | Uses --screenshot and optional viewport dimensions. |
| Repeated or bulk captures | Playwright | Scripts navigation and image saving with a browser engine. |
A normal operating-system screenshot only records pixels currently visible on your monitor. It will not automatically include the rest of a long webpage. Use a browser’s full-page function or an automated method for that.
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool
Mozilla’s documented Firefox Screenshots feature can capture visible content, an entire webpage, a selected region, or a page element, then save or copy the result. It is built into Firefox desktop, so no extension is required.

Step-by-step
- Open the webpage in Firefox desktop and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS. See Mozilla’s instructions for the current interface (updated June 15, 2026).
- Choose Save full page to include content below the fold, or Save visible for only the current viewport. You can drag a region or select an individual page element when you need a focused capture.
- Click Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s configured download folder, or click Copy to put the image on the clipboard for pasting into an editor, document, chat, or email.
Visible versus full-page screenshots
- Save visible records exactly what is on screen, including the current scroll position and viewport size.
- Save full page stitches the document from top to bottom, which is useful for articles, landing pages, and long documentation.
- Region or element avoids unrelated navigation, sidebars, and empty space when you only need one card, chart, or section.
Dynamic pages can change while Firefox assembles a full-page image. If content appears only after scrolling, wait for it to load before starting the capture and check the resulting image afterward.
Capture a website from Chrome’s command line
Chrome’s headless mode is useful when you want a repeatable terminal command or a specific viewport. It is not a normal Chrome menu option; you may need to use the full path to your installed Chrome executable.
Basic screenshot
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com
This writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. Change 412,892 to the viewport width and height you need. On systems where chrome is not on your PATH, replace it with the executable path (for example, the path configured by your operating system).

Control loading time
For pages that load slowly or render content asynchronously, add Chrome’s timeout option. The value is in milliseconds:
Rank #2
- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 --timeout=15000 https://example.com
The timeout sets the maximum wait before capture, even if the page is still loading. A longer timeout can help dynamic pages, but it also makes a batch job slower. Chrome’s official headless reference documents both --screenshot and --print-to-pdf; use the latter when a paginated PDF is more useful than an image.
Use Firefox from a terminal
Firefox also supports headless screenshots. The --screenshot option implies --headless, and you can set the viewport with --window-size.
firefox --screenshot output.png --window-size 1440,900 https://example.com
The command-line documentation covers Windows, Linux (GTK), and macOS display options. This approach is convenient for scripts and scheduled jobs, while Firefox’s regular Screenshots interface is easier for a single manual capture.

Automate screenshots with Playwright
Playwright is appropriate when you capture the same site repeatedly, need a script checked into a project, or must process many URLs. Its Page API sequence is: launch a browser, navigate, then call page.screenshot(). Install Playwright in a project using its official setup instructions, then use a script such as:

const { webkit } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await webkit.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
The documented example uses WebKit; Chromium or Firefox can be selected instead. fullPage: true captures the document rather than only the viewport. For interactive sites, add an explicit wait for the element or state that indicates the page is ready. Avoid assuming that a fixed delay works for every site: network speed, scripts, consent dialogs, and lazy-loaded images vary.
Firefox DevTools as another extension-free option
Firefox DevTools can capture an entire page or a single element. The camera screenshot button is not enabled by default: open DevTools settings and turn on the screenshot button, then use it from the toolbar. This is useful when you are already inspecting HTML or CSS, but the standard Take Screenshot command is faster for most people.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot contains only the visible viewport
Choose Save full page in Firefox, add fullPage: true in Playwright, or use a browser command designed for document capture. An operating-system screenshot cannot include content that was never on screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe page is blank or missing images
Wait until the page finishes loading and confirm that images are visible before capturing. Lazy-loaded content may require scrolling or an automation wait condition. If a site requires login, complete authentication in the same browser session; command-line runs usually start with a fresh profile.

- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
The command is not found
Your browser executable is not on the shell PATH. Locate the installed executable and run the command with its full path, or add that directory to PATH. Keep the URL quoted when it contains characters interpreted by your shell.
The image is cut off or the layout is wrong
Set an explicit viewport with --window-size or Playwright’s viewport. Responsive designs change at breakpoints, so a mobile-width capture and a desktop-width capture are expected to differ. Check zoom level and device pixel settings when comparing images.
A consent banner, chat bubble, or popup obscures the page
Dismiss the overlay before using Firefox or Playwright. For a scripted workflow, add a step that clicks the close or accept control, then wait for it to disappear. Some sites show different dialogs by region, cookie state, or user agent.
The capture happens before content is ready
Use a documented timeout in Chrome, a reliable readiness condition in Playwright, or wait for the page’s key element in Firefox before starting. A longer wait improves completeness but increases runtime; there is no universal delay that suits every page.

Performance, reliability, and file handling
- One-off work: Firefox’s built-in tool has the least setup and saves directly to your normal downloads folder.
- Repeatable work: Command-line browsers and Playwright make viewport, output names, and timing explicit, which helps when you need the same result again.
- Long pages: Full-page stitching can expose fixed headers repeated at intervals or sections that change while scrolling. Inspect the image instead of assuming the result is identical to a print layout.
- Output location: Firefox uses its configured download location. Chrome’s headless example writes to the current working directory unless you direct output elsewhere. Playwright writes to the path supplied in
page.screenshot(). - Privacy: Screenshots can contain account names, personal data, tokens, or internal URLs. Review and crop files before sharing, and avoid placing secrets in command history or publicly accessible folders.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options. A direct cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The equivalent Python request is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page-range controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a website without installing anything?
Yes. Firefox desktop includes the Take Screenshot feature, and Windows, macOS, and Linux also provide operating-system screenshot shortcuts for the current screen.
What is the difference between a full-page and scrolling screenshot?
A full-page capture includes the document beyond the current viewport, while a scrolling screenshot is the process of moving through the page to assemble that document into one image.
Can a website prevent screenshots?
A site can restrict access, require authentication, or render content differently, but browser and command-line capture behavior depends on the page and its loading state. Respect the site’s terms and privacy requirements.
The Bottom Line
Use Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot for the quickest extension-free full-page image. Choose headless Chrome or Firefox for terminal jobs, Playwright for repeatable automation, and ScreenshotNeo when you want a managed API or MCP workflow without maintaining browser setup.
