It creates and manipulates images; it does not run HTML, CSS, or JavaScript as a browser does. To screenshot a webpage, first render it in a browser and save the resulting image. Then use GD in PHP to crop, resize, annotate, composite, or convert that image if needed. The distinction matters: imagegrabscreen() captures the current screen on Windows; it is not a portable webpage screenshot function. PHP’s GD documentation describes the image library and its supported functions.
What PHP GD can—and cannot—do
GD is useful after you have pixels. It can create and manipulate images, including work with formats such as PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP when those formats are enabled in the PHP build installed on your server. It does not navigate to a URL, lay out a page, execute scripts, or capture a browser window as a webpage screenshot.
| Task | What you need | What GD contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Render a webpage and capture its appearance | A browser rendering process, configured with a URL, viewport, and page-load conditions | Nothing during rendering; GD may process the resulting image afterward |
| Crop, resize, or otherwise process an existing screenshot | A supported image file or image data | Image loading, copying, and output functions |
| Capture the current screen on Windows | A Windows environment | imagegrabscreen() can capture the whole current screen; it is not a remote-URL browser renderer |
The PHP manual explicitly says of imagegrabscreen(): “This function is only available on Windows.” Its name should not be read as a promise that it opens a URL or renders a website. See the imagegrabscreen() manual entry.
Build the screenshot pipeline
- Render the URL in a browser. Choose a browser automation package or screenshot service that can run in your deployment environment. Set the URL, viewport, and wait condition deliberately; these affect which page state is captured.
- Save the browser output as an image. PNG is a practical choice for a shareable screenshot. Confirm the output format is supported by the PHP/GD runtime that will process it.
- Use GD only for image work. Load the saved raster image, crop or resize it if required, and write it to a file or return its bytes from a PHP endpoint.
- Check the result. Verify the output dimensions, response content type if serving bytes, and whether the selected viewport and wait behavior captured the intended state.
The browser, its version and permissions, the automation package, fonts, viewport, page state, and load timing can all affect the image. The PHP GD manual establishes image-processing capabilities, not a particular browser-automation setup; choose and verify that part against the package’s own current documentation.

Check GD support in your PHP runtime
Support varies by installed PHP/GD build. Run gd_info() in the same runtime that will process the screenshot, rather than assuming that a format available on a developer machine is also enabled in production.
<?php
var_export(gd_info());
Inspect the resulting information for the formats and capabilities your application needs. If GD is unavailable or the required image format is not enabled, install or enable the appropriate GD support for that PHP runtime, then check again. The PHP GD documentation describes the library and its functions.
Process a browser screenshot with PHP GD
The following runnable script assumes a browser-rendered screenshot already exists at input.png. It loads that image, copies a rectangular region to a new true-color image, and writes a PNG file. It demonstrates GD’s role in the workflow; it does not take a screenshot of a URL.

// Save as process-screenshot.php and put input.png beside it.
$sourcePath = __DIR__ . '/input.png';
$outputPath = __DIR__ . '/crop.png';

throw new RuntimeException('The GD extension is not enabled in this PHP runtime.');
}
if (!is_file($sourcePath) || !is_readable($sourcePath)) {
throw new RuntimeException('Cannot read input.png.');
}
$source = imagecreatefrompng($sourcePath);
if ($source === false) {
throw new RuntimeException('Could not decode input.png as PNG.');
}
$sourceWidth = imagesx($source);
$sourceHeight = imagesy($source);
// Example crop: the upper-left 800 by 600 pixels, limited to the source bounds.
$cropWidth = min(800, $sourceWidth);
$cropHeight = min(600, $sourceHeight);
$crop = imagecreatetruecolor($cropWidth, $cropHeight);
if ($crop === false) {

}
$copied = imagecopy(

);
if (!$copied || !imagepng($crop, $outputPath)) {
imagedestroy($crop);
imagedestroy($source);
throw new RuntimeException('Could not write crop.png.');
}
imagedestroy($crop);
imagedestroy($source);
echo "Wrote {$outputPath}" . PHP_EOL;
Run it with php process-screenshot.php. The source image must be a valid PNG because this example uses imagecreatefrompng(); for another supported format, use its corresponding loader and verify that the format is enabled. The rectangle passed to imagecopy() is specified with destination coordinates, source coordinates, width, and height. The imagecopy() manual entry documents that operation.
Resize rather than crop
If the goal is a smaller full image instead of a cropped region, create a destination canvas at the target dimensions and use imagecopyresampled() to scale the source into it. Keep the aspect ratio if the screenshot must not look stretched; calculate one target dimension from the other and the source dimensions. GD’s output functions, including imagepng(), are appropriate for ordinary image output when the format is supported by the build.
Return the processed image from a PHP endpoint
If a web route should return the generated PNG rather than save it, write the image to the output buffer after sending the matching content type. Do not print debugging text before the header or image bytes.

Where imagegrabscreen() fits
imagegrabscreen() is a narrow Windows-only function for capturing the whole current screen. It does not load a webpage from a URL, provide browser automation, or offer a portable server-side screenshot workflow. A browser must still render a webpage if the intended output is a screenshot of that webpage. Consult the PHP manual entry before considering this function for a Windows-specific screen-capture task.
Use PNG or another supported output format—not GD’s native format
For an image intended to be shared or served, use a conventional supported format such as PNG. Check available formats with gd_info() because support depends on the installed build. Avoid treating imagegd() as a normal interchange format: the PHP manual describes the GD/GD2 formats as proprietary and obsolete, suitable only for development and testing. See the imagegd() manual entry.
Troubleshooting common PHP GD failures
- “Call to undefined function imagecreatefrompng()” or another GD function: GD is not enabled in the PHP runtime executing the script. Enable/install the extension for that runtime and verify with
extension_loaded('gd')andgd_info(). - “Unsupported format” or image loading returns false: The file may not match the loader you called, may be unreadable or invalid, or the format may not be enabled in this build. Check the file, use the matching loader, and inspect
gd_info(). - The PHP code succeeds but there is no webpage screenshot: GD is processing image pixels; it has not rendered a URL. Add a browser rendering step before GD, or use a screenshot API.
- The output is blank, incomplete, or shows a loading state: Investigate the browser capture’s viewport, page state, and wait condition. Those are rendering-stage concerns, not corrections GD can make after the capture.
- Image output is corrupted in an HTTP response: Send the correct content type and ensure no warnings, whitespace, or debug output precede the image bytes. Saving to a file first can help isolate processing from HTTP response issues.
- Crop dimensions fail on small source images: Keep the requested rectangle within the source bounds. The example limits its crop width and height to the image’s actual dimensions.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; use PHP GD afterward only if you need additional image processing. Its capture flow accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For an image file, use the documented screenshot endpoint and save its response. The example uses the target URL from the product instructions; replace it with the page you need. Keep your access key private and out of public client-side code. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
