Windows 10’s Snipping Tool cannot capture a scrolling screenshot. Its documented modes are freeform, rectangular, window and full-screen snips, all of which capture the current screen area. To save a page or window longer than the display, use a browser’s full-page capture feature, a scrolling-capture utility such as PicPick or Snagit, or an API such as ScreenshotNeo.
What Snipping Tool can capture in Windows 10
Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen.” In Windows 10, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it. You can also press Windows + Shift + S to open the snipping overlay, or press Print Screen for a full-screen snapshot.
- Open Snipping Tool or press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose Freeform, Rectangular, Window or Full-screen snip.
- Select the visible area you need.
- Use the resulting window to edit, save, copy or share the image.
None of these modes follows a page as you scroll. A window snip captures the window as it appears, not its content below the fold. Consequently, there is no hidden Snipping Tool setting or keyboard shortcut that turns a normal Windows 10 snip into one continuous, vertically scrolling image.
Why a scrolling screenshot needs a different method
A scrolling capture must control the application being captured, move through content beyond the current viewport, and combine the resulting sections into one file. A conventional screen snip only records pixels currently displayed. This distinction matters for:

- Chat histories, spreadsheets and lists that extend below the window.
- Documentation pages where one image should preserve the complete flow.
- Windows whose content scrolls internally rather than with the main page.
If the content is a webpage, a browser’s built-in full-page command is usually the simplest do-it-yourself solution. If it is an arbitrary Windows application, use software designed to follow scrolling windows.
Method 1: Use your browser’s full-page capture
For a webpage, first look in the browser’s page or developer tools menu for a command named Full page, Full-page screenshot or similar. Browser labels and availability vary by browser and version, so do not confuse a normal visible-area screenshot with the full-page option.
- Open the target webpage and wait for its text, images and interactive content to load.
- Dismiss or complete any cookie notice, sign-in prompt or overlay that covers the page. Otherwise the overlay may appear in the result.
- Open the browser’s screenshot or developer-tools command.
- Choose the full-page option rather than visible-area or selection capture.
- Preview the generated image, then save it as PNG or the format offered by your browser.
When the result is incomplete
- Lazy-loaded images are missing: scroll through the page once before capturing so deferred content has a chance to load.
- A fixed header repeats: try the browser’s full-page command again after checking its preview; fixed elements can be rendered differently by different browsers.
- A page stops at a “load more” control: activate that control and wait for additional content before starting the capture.
- Consent banners or chat widgets cover the page: close them first, or use a capture service that removes common overlays before capture.
This approach is appropriate for webpages, but it does not guarantee a full capture of an arbitrary desktop window. Applications such as a spreadsheet or PDF viewer may need a dedicated scrolling-window utility.

Method 2: Use a scrolling-capture utility
Third-party Windows tools add scrolling capture to workflows where Snipping Tool is limited. The available feature set, supported applications, licensing and Windows compatibility can change, so verify the current vendor documentation before installing or paying.

General workflow
- Install the utility from its current official source and allow any required screen-capture permission.
- Select Scrolling window, Panoramic capture or the equivalent command.
- Choose the window or region to capture.
- Start scrolling capture and avoid moving the mouse or changing the window until the tool finishes.
- Inspect the stitched image for repeated sections, skipped content and sticky headers before exporting.
Utilities can capture more than a browser, but they are not automatically successful with every application. Hardware-accelerated canvases, protected video, remote desktops and custom scroll containers can prevent reliable stitching.

Troubleshooting scrolling captures
The output contains only the visible screen
You selected a normal snip or visible-area browser command. Choose the browser’s full-page mode or a utility’s scrolling-window mode. Snipping Tool itself cannot be switched into scrolling mode.
The capture has seams, jumps or duplicated rows
Keep the target window still, wait for animations and dynamic ads to settle, and retry with a stable window size. Sticky headers and continuously changing content can confuse stitching; hiding those elements or using a service with CSS and JavaScript controls can produce a cleaner result.

Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy loading, wait for network activity to finish, and check whether the content requires authentication. For automated captures, set an appropriate selector wait, delay or network-idle condition.
The page is blocked or shows a CAPTCHA
