For a complete Google Doc, use File > Print on a computer. Google opens print settings and automatically downloads a PDF for a document. That is the reliable, official way to preserve the whole file, although the result is a PDF rather than one tall PNG or JPEG.
If you specifically need one image, Chrome DevTools and full-page extensions are worth testing, but neither is dependable for the Google Docs editing canvas. A current Chrome guide reported that DevTools captured only the visible Docs window in its test. The steps below show both paths and explain when each is appropriate.
Choose the right output first

“Scrolling screenshot” usually means a capture that includes content below the current viewport. Google Docs does not provide a documented command that exports a whole scrolling document as one image. Its documented whole-document workflow is printing to PDF.
Save the entire Google Doc as a PDF
- Open the document on a computer.
- Choose File > Print.
- In the print settings window, select the printer, paper, orientation and other settings you need.
- Click Print. For a Google document, Google says, “A PDF file will automatically download.”
Open the downloaded PDF and check the first, middle and last pages before sharing it. This catches missing images, an unexpected page break or a table that became difficult to read.

Pageless documents need a layout check
Pageless mode is designed for continuous scrolling in the editor. It has no page breaks; images and line breaks adjust to the window, wide tables can require horizontal scrolling, and the viewing width can be changed. Printing still creates pages, so the PDF may not resemble the on-screen scroll.
Google notes that, when a pageless document is printed, images adjust to the page width and wide tables are squeezed to fit. If the printed appearance matters, switch to Pages first: choose File > Page setup, select Pages, then click OK. Google also lists Format > Switch to pages format as an available route. After checking the page breaks, print again.
Pages versus Pageless
- Pages: a page-oriented format with page breaks and a predictable print structure.
- Pageless: a continuous editor view that adapts to screen width; it is not an exported screenshot or image.
Changing this setting changes how the document is displayed and laid out for editing. It does not itself create a screenshot file.
Try Chrome DevTools when a PNG is mandatory
Chrome’s built-in capture command can produce a full-size screenshot on many ordinary web pages. Google Docs is an exception often enough that you should treat this as an experiment, not a guarantee. A Zapier guide dated April 20, 2026 reported that its Google Docs test captured only the visible Docs window.

- Open the document in Chrome and scroll to the area you want to test.
- Open DevTools with Cmd+Option+I on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows.
- Open the DevTools command menu with Cmd+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot.
- Open the resulting image and inspect the bottom, embedded images, tables and any content that was below the fold.
If the image ends where the browser window ended, DevTools captured the application viewport rather than the document’s complete canvas. There is no setting in this command that can force Google Docs to expose content its editor does not render as one page.
Test a full-page browser extension carefully
An extension such as GoFullPage advertises full-page capture and image/PDF export. Its Chrome Web Store listing includes a changelog entry dated September 24, 2026. The listing does not establish that it captures the complete Google Docs editing canvas, so compatibility must be verified on your own document.
- Use a duplicate or non-sensitive document for the first test.
- Review the extension’s requested permissions before installing it.
- Capture a short document, then one with images, tables and comments.
- Compare the image with the document from top to bottom; look for repeated toolbars, missing lazy-loaded images, clipped tables and blank areas.
- Remove the extension if the output is incomplete or its permissions are not appropriate for your documents.
For a long document that must remain readable, several correctly checked section captures are safer than presenting one image that silently omits content. If the recipient needs search, selectable text or reliable pagination, send the PDF instead.

- Document extent: full-page capture loads lazy images; capture one element with a CSS selector when the document is embedded in a larger page.
- Appearance: choose dark mode, one of 12 device presets or any viewport, and a retina scale.

Troubleshooting checklist
The PDF does not look like the pageless editor
This is expected when a continuous layout is converted to paper. Switch to Pages, adjust margins or orientation, check wide tables and print again. The editor’s scrolling appearance is not a promise about the PDF’s pagination.
DevTools saved only the visible window
That behavior was reported for Google Docs in the April 20, 2026 guide. Verify the file immediately. If content is missing, use the PDF workflow or test an extension on a copy; do not distribute an unchecked image.
An extension produces duplicated or missing content
Long web apps can change what is rendered while an extension scrolls. Test a shorter document, wait for images to load, disable the extension on sensitive files and compare the entire result. If it still fails, use a PDF or manually capture verified sections.

The API returns a blank or failed result
Check that the target URL is accessible to the capture request and that any required headers, cookies or Authorization details are configured. Inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed in the response. The image is too large or slow to process
Capture a specific element, set an appropriate viewport and retina scale, resize the output, or request PDF with page ranges. For repeated URLs, choose a cache TTL; for many documents, use asynchronous jobs or the 100-URL bulk endpoint. These controls change processing strategy, not the underlying content available from Google Docs.
Which method should you use?
- Choose File > Print when completeness, readability, printing or archiving matters.
- Choose DevTools only when you need a quick image and can inspect it for missing content.
- Try a full-page extension only after testing it with a copy or non-sensitive document.
- Use an API when captures must be repeatable, scripted, cleaned of overlays or integrated into an AI workflow.
