On Windows 10 or Windows 11, press Windows+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay—no Print Screen key needed. Choose a region, window, full screen, or freeform shape. If you use a Mac or Chromebook, use its own screenshot shortcut instead; the keys differ by operating system.
Take a screenshot on Windows without PrtScn
The Print Screen key is often labeled PrtScn, PrtSc, or something similar, but it is not required for a screenshot. Microsoft documents Windows+Shift+S as the shortcut for opening the Snipping Tool overlay to capture an image snapshot. This is usually the most useful option when you need to select only part of the screen. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the capture controls appear.
- Choose a capture mode: rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform.
- Make the selection or click the window you want. The capture opens in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it.
- To keep a copy, use the save control in Snipping Tool. Microsoft says captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder; save behavior and the default folder can be changed in Settings.
Use the hardware-dependent fallback
If the device has no PrtScn key, Microsoft also lists Fn+Windows+Space for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft qualifies this combination as dependent on the hardware. If it does nothing, check the computer maker’s instructions rather than assuming every laptop maps its Fn key the same way. Microsoft’s guidance points to File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots to find an image made with this fallback. See Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance.
Which Windows method should you choose?
- Need a selected area or a particular window: use Windows+Shift+S, then choose the appropriate mode.
- Want a keyboard-only fallback on a device without PrtScn: try Fn+Windows+Space, provided the hardware supports it.
- Need an editable capture: use Snipping Tool, which opens the capture for editing and saving.
Take a screenshot on a Mac
Mac screenshot shortcuts use Command rather than the Windows key. Apple documents these built-in options for macOS:

- Shift+Command+3 captures the whole screen.
- Shift+Command+4 lets you select an area.
- Shift+Command+5 opens the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. Its Options menu includes the save location and a timer.
To capture a particular window or menu, press Shift+Command+4, then press Space and click the target. By default, screenshots are saved to the desktop. Some apps restrict capture: Apple notes that apps such as Apple TV may not let you take screenshots of their windows. See Apple’s screenshot instructions.
Take a screenshot on a Chromebook
On a Chromebook, the Show Windows key is the key used for managing open windows. Google lists these shortcuts:

- Ctrl+Show Windows takes a screenshot.
- Shift+Ctrl+Show Windows starts a partial-screen capture.
- Ctrl+Shift+Show Windows opens more screenshot features.
- On a Chromebook tablet, press Power+Volume Down.
Google’s main shortcut instructions are for a US standard English QWERTY keyboard, while noting that international keyboard users can also follow them. When using an external Windows or Mac keyboard, the Windows or Command key takes the place of Search or Launcher for applicable Chromebook shortcuts. Find the screenshot after capture
The shortcut and the save location are separate questions: some methods open an editor or toolbar, while others save a file directly. For Windows, Microsoft identifies Pictures > Screenshots as the location for the no-PrtScn fallback and says Snipping Tool automatically saves captures to the Screenshots folder. Snipping Tool’s Settings let you change its automatic-save behavior or default folder. On Mac, the default is the desktop; with the Screenshot app, use Options to select another destination. For Chromebook, use the Files app to locate the saved image if it is not immediately visible; Google’s shortcut page explains the controls, though the exact destination may depend on the device’s setup.

Troubleshoot a shortcut that does nothing
- Windows+Shift+S does not open the overlay: verify you are pressing the Windows key, not Control, and press the three keys together. If the device is managed by an organization or has customized keyboard settings, those settings may affect shortcuts; Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference covers system shortcuts.
- Fn+Windows+Space does not work: this is not guaranteed for every device. Consult the computer manufacturer’s keyboard documentation or use Snipping Tool with Windows+Shift+S.
- The selected area is missing or wrong: start a fresh capture and choose the intended mode before selecting. Rectangular and freeform modes require drawing a region; window mode requires selecting the target window.
- You cannot capture a particular app window: the app may restrict screenshots. Apple specifically names Apple TV as an example of an app that may not allow its windows to be captured.
- You cannot find the image: check the platform’s default folder first, then the save location configured in its screenshot tool. On Windows, use Pictures > Screenshots; on Mac, check the desktop unless you changed the destination.
