To capture only the window you are using in Windows, click that window, press Alt + Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn), paste with Ctrl + V, and save the image from the app where you pasted it. The shortcut copies the active window to the clipboard; it does not create a file by itself.
What Alt + Print Screen captures
Alt + Print Screen targets the window that currently has focus. If a browser, document, dialog box or another application is active, Windows copies that window’s screenshot to the clipboard. You can then paste the image into Paint, an Office application, an image editor, an email, a chat or another program that accepts images.
The Print Screen key by itself has a different scope: it captures the entire screen and copies that image to the clipboard. Microsoft’s shortcut table describes Alt + PrtScn as “Capture a screenshot of the active window and copy it to the clipboard.”
Print Screen key names
Keyboard manufacturers shorten the label in several ways. PrtSc, PrtScn, PrntScrn and Print Screen refer to the same general key. Look near the function-key row or the upper-right area of a full-size keyboard. On a laptop or compact keyboard, the key may share a function with another key and require Fn.

Exact steps: capture, paste and save
- Make the target window active. Click its title bar or any usable area inside it. Check that it is the window you intend to copy; keyboard focus determines the result.
- Press Alt + Print Screen. Hold Alt, press the key labeled Print Screen, then release both. Windows places the active-window image on the clipboard. There is normally no separate screenshot file or confirmation dialog.
- Open the destination application. Start Paint, Word, PowerPoint, an email composer, a graphics editor or another app that supports pasted images.
- Paste with Ctrl + V. The screenshot should appear in the destination. Use that application’s save command to create a file.
Save the pasted image
After pasting, use the destination program’s normal save workflow, such as File > Save As. Choose an image format offered by that program, commonly PNG or JPEG, and select a folder and filename. If you paste into an Office document, saving the document preserves the image inside it; exporting or copying the image from that document is a separate operation.
Paste before replacing the clipboard
The result exists in the clipboard until another operation replaces it. Copying text, taking another screenshot or using an application that writes to the clipboard can remove the first capture. If you need several windows, paste and save each image before capturing the next one.
Using the shortcut on laptops and compact keyboards
Some keyboards put Print Screen behind an Fn layer. Try the key combination documented for your specific keyboard, such as an Fn-modified Print Screen key. There is no single Fn combination that works on every laptop, so check the keyboard’s markings or its manufacturer documentation.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 both support the Alt + Print Screen workflow. The visible key label and the keyboard layer, rather than the Windows edition, are usually what determine whether the keystroke reaches Windows. If the key is shared with another function, hold the required modifier exactly as the keyboard documentation specifies.

Work through these checks in order. Shortcut behavior can vary by application, so a keystroke that works in one program may be intercepted or handled differently in another.

Use Snipping Tool when you need a region or a visible save workflow
Windows + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. It is the built-in fallback when you need more than the active-window clipboard capture. The overlay supports rectangular, free-form, window and full-screen captures. After selecting an area or window, Snipping Tool lets you edit, save or share the result.

- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose the rectangular, free-form, window or full-screen mode from the overlay.
- Select the region or window. For a window capture, move the pointer over the desired window and select it.
- Use the notification or Snipping Tool window to make edits, save the image or share it.
Choose Snipping Tool when you need a selected region, an explicit save action or a quick annotation. Choose Alt + Print Screen when the complete active window is the exact scope you want and a clipboard result is sufficient.

Verify focus before every capture
When several windows overlap, click the title bar or content area of the one you want. Do not rely on where the pointer happens to be; the active window is what Alt + Print Screen uses.

For a sequence of windows, use one destination folder and a predictable naming scheme. Capture, paste, save, then activate the next window. This avoids losing an earlier image to a later clipboard operation.

Inspect before sharing
An active-window screenshot can include account names, email addresses, notifications or other information visible inside that window. Review the pasted image before attaching or publishing it, and crop or redact sensitive details in the destination app when necessary.
Understand the speed trade-off
The keystroke itself is immediate, but the total time includes switching to a destination app and saving. Alt + Print Screen is therefore efficient for a quick clipboard handoff, not a one-step archival system. Snipping Tool adds a selection and editing stage in exchange for more control.
