How to Take a Screenshot of a Website Homepage

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture only what is currently visible, use your computer’s screenshot shortcut. To capture a homepage from top to bottom, use a browser’s full-page screenshot feature: Firefox and Edge offer direct full-page options, while Chrome provides one in DevTools. If you need a repeatable capture in code, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one API request.

Choose between a screen capture and a full-page screenshot

A regular screenshot records the visible screen or browser window. It is quick and useful when you need to show a particular section, but it will not include content farther down the homepage. A full-page screenshot captures page content beyond the visible browser viewport, making it the better choice for a long homepage or a record of the page’s layout from top to bottom.

  • Choose a visible-area capture for a menu, headline, error, or section already on screen.
  • Choose a full-page capture when the homepage extends below the fold and you need one image of more of the page.
  • Choose a browser capture tool when you want the webpage rather than the entire desktop, or need a full-page option, markup, or browser-specific controls.

Before capturing a long page, scroll through it once if it contains lazy-loaded images or interactive sections. This gives the browser a chance to load content that might otherwise appear blank in the capture. It is practical guidance, not a guarantee: sites load content in different ways.

Capture the visible screen on Windows or Mac

Windows: open Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Choose the capture mode that suits the area you need: rectangle, window, full screen, or freeform.
  3. Select or capture the area. Use the Snipping Tool workflow to copy or save the result.

Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of a PC screen. This is a screen-capture method: selecting the full-screen mode captures the screen, not necessarily the entire length of a webpage that extends beyond the browser window.

You can also press Print Screen to copy an image of the entire screen to the clipboard. If you need a particular browser area rather than the whole desktop, use the snipping shortcut and select the area.

Mac: use Screenshot controls or capture the screen

  1. Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot controls.
  2. Choose the screen-capture option you need and capture the visible browser content.
  3. For a whole-screen screenshot directly, press Shift + Command + 3.

These shortcuts capture screen content; they do not turn a long webpage into a single full-page image. Apple notes that some protected apps may block screenshots, so a capture may not be available in every app or situation.

Capture an entire homepage in Firefox

Firefox has a direct full-page option. Mozilla’s instructions, updated June 15, 2026, describe a context-menu route and keyboard shortcuts.

  1. Open the homepage in Firefox and, if it is long or uses lazy-loaded content, scroll through it once.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot.
  3. Choose Save full page.
  4. Save the resulting image where you can find it.

Shortcuts are Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows and Linux, and Command + Shift + S on macOS. If the context menu is opened over a link, image, or other page element, the options may differ; try right-clicking an empty area instead.

Capture a full-page screenshot in Chrome

Chrome’s documented route uses DevTools and Device mode. The command captures the whole page, including content outside the viewport.

  1. Open the homepage in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools. For example, use the browser’s menu to open More tools and then Developer tools.
  3. In DevTools, switch to Device mode.
  4. Open the DevTools screenshot menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot.
  5. Find the saved image in your downloads.

This route offers more browser control than a basic screen shortcut, but it involves DevTools and device emulation. If you only need the visible page area, an operating-system screenshot is usually more direct. Chrome for Developers describes full-size capture as including the whole page, including content that is not visible in the viewport.

Capture a page or selected area in Microsoft Edge

Edge’s Screenshot Tool can capture a full page or a selected area, and it supports markup before you copy or save the result.

  1. Open the homepage in Edge.
  2. Open the Screenshot Tool from Edge’s browser controls.
  3. Choose a full-page capture or select the area you need.
  4. Add markup if needed, then copy or save the image.

Use a selected-area capture for a single panel or section. Choose full page when the goal is to include content below the fold. Browser controls can change over time; if you cannot find the tool, check Edge’s current browser menus for Screenshot Tool.

Prepare a homepage that does not capture cleanly

A screenshot is a record of what the browser rendered at capture time, so timing and page behavior matter. A blank area may mean the content had not loaded yet, rather than that the screenshot feature failed.

  • Lazy-loaded images: scroll through the page before capturing so images that load as they enter view have an opportunity to appear.
  • Animations or changing content: wait for the page to settle, then capture. A moving or updating section can produce a result that differs from what you expected.
  • Cookie banners, popups, or chat widgets: close or dismiss them if the site allows it and your purpose is to capture the underlying homepage. If they are the subject of the screenshot, leave them visible.
  • Nested scroll areas: a page may contain a separately scrolling panel. A full-page capture of the document may not show every part of that panel at once; capture the relevant panel separately if needed.
  • Very large pages: if a full-page image is unwieldy, capture the important sections separately or use a PDF workflow where the browser or service supports one.
  • Protected content: some apps may block screenshots. Do not assume a missing or black result can be fixed by switching capture shortcuts.

Or skip the browser setup

For an automated capture, ScreenshotNeo takes a website URL and returns a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. Its API can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.

This cURL request captures the homepage at Stripe as a WebP file. Replace the URL with the homepage you are authorized to capture and replace the key placeholder with your API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ScreenshotNeo accepts the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. Its available options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, viewport and device presets, retina scale, PDF page settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting for a selector or network idle, custom headers and cookies, and caching with a chosen TTL. For repeatable workflows, it also supports asynchronous jobs, signed webhooks, bulk captures of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API.

Troubleshooting

The screenshot shows only the top of the homepage

You likely captured the visible screen rather than the full document. In Firefox, use Take Screenshot and then Save full page. In Chrome, use DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot. In Edge, choose the full-page option in Screenshot Tool.

Images or sections are missing

Scroll through the page before taking the screenshot, then retry after the content has had time to load. Lazy loading and interactive sections vary by site, so a full-page command may not make every element appear immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong area or whole desktop was captured

On Windows, use Windows + Shift + S and select a region or window rather than using Print Screen for the whole screen. On macOS, use the Screenshot controls with Shift + Command + 5 when you need to choose a capture mode.

The browser command or tool is missing

Check that you are using the named browser and follow its route: Firefox’s page context menu, Chrome DevTools in Device mode, or Edge’s Screenshot Tool. A Windows or macOS shortcut is not a substitute for a browser’s full-page feature.

A popup obscures the page

Dismiss the popup before capture if the site provides a close or consent choice and you want the page beneath it. Keep it visible when documenting the popup itself. For automated captures, ScreenshotNeo’s banner and widget removal can be disabled when you do not want cleanup.

The automated capture reports a failed or blank page

Check that the URL is correct and the page is reachable, then inspect the response’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers to see the reported outcome and billing status. ScreenshotNeo does not bill for bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, or cache hits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a full-page screenshot on a phone?

The methods covered here apply to Windows, Mac, and desktop browsers. Mobile full-page capture controls vary by device and browser, so check the controls for the specific mobile browser you use.

Will a full-page screenshot include content inside every scrolling panel?

Not necessarily. A page-level capture may not expand a separately scrolling panel; capture that panel separately if it contains content you need.
