To screenshot a PDF that is open online, open it in Microsoft Edge, choose Screenshot from the right-click menu, select the area or full page, then copy or save the capture. For a precise selection from a PDF in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, use Take a snapshot and paste the copied image into another app. Both approaches capture the PDF as it is rendered on screen; they do not turn the underlying PDF text into a new image file automatically.
Choose the method that fits the capture
The right workflow depends on what you need to save. A screenshot is useful for sharing a chart, diagram, excerpt, or the visible appearance of a page. If you need a faithful image of a whole page, capture the whole rendered page; if you need only a portion, select a rectangle. In either case, zoom and position the PDF before capturing so the text is legible and the complete region is visible.

Edge is the simpler choice when you have the document open in its browser viewer and want to save or mark up what you see. Acrobat Snapshot is useful when you want to select content in the PDF and paste it straight into another application. Feature availability and menu labels can vary by device, market, and browser version.
Screenshot an online PDF in Microsoft Edge
- Open the PDF in Edge. Navigate to the PDF in the browser or open the PDF file in Edge. Wait for the page to render before capturing.
- Set the page view. Choose a suitable zoom level and scroll the page so the complete chart, paragraph, or other area you want is visible. For small text, zoom in first.
- Start Screenshot. Right-click in the PDF and choose Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows.
- Select the scope. Choose a selected area for a chart or excerpt, or full-page capture when you need the entire rendered page.
- Review and save. Use the overlay controls to mark up the capture if needed, then copy it or save it.
Microsoft documents Screenshot as a way to capture a full page or selected area and copy or save the result. If you do not see the command, the feature may not be available in your current device, market, or browser version. Try updating Edge where appropriate, or use the PDF menu method below if Acrobat is available.

For a selection
Drag around only the content you want to share. Leave a small margin where labels or chart axes need context, but avoid including unrelated page content. Check the captured preview before copying or saving; a selection made too tightly can clip text, legends, or footnotes.
For a full page
Choose the full-page option when the complete rendered page matters. Inspect the result before using it: the capture reflects the page as displayed by the viewer, and a long or scaled page may make small text difficult to read. If the full-page option is missing, capture the necessary visible area or use a conversion workflow designed to export PDF pages as image files.
Capture a PDF area with Acrobat or Acrobat Reader
- Open the PDF in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
- Choose the Snapshot command. In current Acrobat, open Menu > Undo, Redo and More and select Take a snapshot. Adobe documents the Reader command under Edit > More.
- Capture the content. Click once to capture the visible PDF content, or drag a rectangle around the exact region you need.
- Paste the image. Use Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on macOS in the destination app.
Adobe describes Snapshot as copying an area as an image. The result is placed on the clipboard, so paste it into a document, presentation, image editor, or other app that accepts an image. The documented Reader workflow also uses a rectangle selection followed by pasting into another application.

If Snapshot is unavailable
PDF security settings can disallow copying in Acrobat Reader. If the command is unavailable or copying is blocked, do not try to bypass document restrictions. Ask the document owner for an allowed copy or use a permitted capture method. For a document you are authorized to capture, Edge may offer a separate on-screen Screenshot command, depending on your browser version and device.
Save a PDF page as an image, not just a screenshot
A screenshot records the rendered view. Its dimensions and legibility depend on the zoom, the window or selection size, and the capture workflow. That is often exactly what you need for a quick visual excerpt, but it is not the same as exporting a PDF page to an image file. If the goal is a page image for a document, archive, or image-processing workflow, use a PDF-to-image export or converter that supports the required format and page selection.
Before using an online converter, consider whether the PDF contains private or confidential information. Uploading a file to an online service sends it outside the local browser-viewing workflow. For sensitive PDFs, prefer an approved local application and check your organisation’s handling rules. Edge and Acrobat capture workflows described above keep the capture within the viewing session; they do not require uploading the PDF to a third-party converter.

Make the capture readable and complete
- Zoom before capturing. Small text can become hard to read when a page is fitted to a narrow browser window. Increase zoom until the smallest important text is clear.
- Check the full region. Scroll and position the page so the chart title, axes, labels, or paragraph boundaries are all visible. Avoid clipping content at the edge of the selection.
- Include context deliberately. A cropped figure may be confusing without its heading, source note, or legend. Capture those elements when they are needed to understand the image.
- Review the result. Confirm the image is not blank, clipped, or too small before sending it or pasting it into another document.
- Respect document permissions. If copying is disabled or the document is restricted, seek permission rather than attempting to defeat the restriction.

Troubleshooting
There is no Screenshot option in Edge
Screenshot availability varies by device, market, and browser version. Try the right-click menu rather than relying only on the keyboard shortcut, and check whether Edge is current. If the option remains absent, use Acrobat Snapshot if available, or capture the visible region with a screenshot feature provided by your operating system.
The capture is blank or incomplete
Wait until the PDF page has finished rendering, then try again. Make sure the intended page is visible and not covered by a loading state or viewer overlay. For a full-page capture, review the output rather than assuming it includes every page of a multi-page PDF; the feature captures a rendered page, not necessarily the entire document.

Increase the PDF zoom and capture again, ideally selecting a smaller area with the relevant content. A screenshot cannot restore detail that was too small in the rendered view. If you need a page image with more control over output dimensions, use a PDF export or conversion workflow instead.

Acrobat will not copy the selection
Check whether PDF security settings restrict copying. Reader’s documented workflow depends on selecting the area and pasting the resulting image into another app. If permissions block that workflow, request an unrestricted or authorized copy from the owner.
The image does not paste into the destination app
Confirm you completed the capture and that the destination supports pasted images. In Acrobat, use the platform shortcut after taking the snapshot: Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on macOS. If the destination still rejects it, try an app that accepts images or use a save option in Edge when available.
