To screenshot a GitHub repository, open the exact repository, README, file, branch, tag, or commit in GitHub’s web interface, frame only the content you need, and use your operating system or browser’s built-in capture tool. Save as PNG when small interface text or code must remain readable. Before sharing, verify the revision shown and remove tabs, notifications, tokens, email addresses, and other private information.
Choose the GitHub page you actually need
A repository screenshot can document project identity, explain a README section, show a particular source file, or preserve a control such as a branch selector. Open the narrowest page that answers your purpose.
Repository overview
Use the repository home page when readers need the project name, owner, description, stars, files, and the currently selected branch. Keep the repository name and owner visible so the image has context.
README section
Open the README and scroll to the relevant heading, installation example, table, or image. A focused capture is easier to read than a tiny image of the entire page.

File, branch, tag, or commit
Open the file page and select the intended branch or tag. If the screenshot documents a historical state, navigate to the exact commit before capturing. The visible branch or commit context is part of the evidence; do not crop it away.
Prepare a trustworthy frame
- Confirm the URL and owner. Check that the address bar points to the intended repository rather than a fork, search result, or pull-request view.
- Set the revision. Select the branch, tag, or commit that matches your documentation. A screenshot can silently become misleading when the default branch moves later.
- Position the content. Scroll to the heading, code, table, or control you want to explain. For a repository overview, include the project identity; for a code capture, include the file path and language indicator.
- Set readable zoom. Increase browser zoom until code and labels are legible, but keep enough surrounding context to identify the page. Avoid screenshots where text is technically present but unreadable.
- Clean the browser window. Close unrelated tabs, hide bookmarks if they reveal private information, dismiss notifications, and remove visible tokens, email addresses, customer data, or internal URLs.
- Wait for content. Let images, code highlighting, and expandable sections finish loading. If the page is long, capture several focused regions rather than shrinking everything into one image.
Capture on Windows, macOS, or Linux
The built-in tools differ by desktop environment, so use the command your system displays in its current help or screenshot menu. Select the smallest useful scope: full screen for a repository overview, a window for a clean browser capture, or a rectangle for a README section or code block.
Windows
Open the system snipping utility, choose rectangular, window, or full-screen capture, and select the browser area. A rectangular snip is usually best for a README section because it excludes other tabs and desktop content. Save the result as PNG and reopen it to inspect small text.

macOS
Use the macOS screenshot toolbar to capture the whole screen, a window, or a selected portion. Window capture can include a shadow and browser chrome; a selected portion gives tighter control. Check the saved file before uploading it.
Linux
Use your desktop environment’s screenshot utility for a full screen, active window, or selected region. GNOME, KDE, and other desktops expose different shortcuts and labels, so follow the options shown by your installed environment rather than assuming one universal key combination.

Browser capture
Some browsers provide a page or region screenshot command. It can be useful for content taller than the viewport, but inspect the result for missing lazy-loaded images, duplicated sticky headers, or collapsed controls. A long capture should still preserve the repository name and revision somewhere in the image.
Save, inspect, and describe the image
PNG versus other formats
Choose PNG when code, labels, or small interface text matter; it preserves sharp edges without lossy compression. JPEG can create halos around text, while WebP may be appropriate where file size matters and your destination supports it. Keep the original capture before editing.
Quality checklist
- The repository owner and name are visible.
- The branch, tag, or commit is identifiable when revision matters.
- Code is readable at normal viewing size.
- No secrets, private URLs, access tokens, email addresses, or unrelated notifications appear.
- Controls or highlighted actions are visible, not hidden by a crop.
- The image has concise alt text, such as “README installation section for owner/repository on the main branch.”
Screenshots make articles more visually scannable, particularly for people who have difficulty reading. They should supplement, not replace, the written instructions: readers who cannot see the image still need the repository URL, revision, file path, and action described in text.
Upload or embed the screenshot on GitHub
GitHub README, issue, pull-request, and discussion editors can accept an image by uploading, dragging and dropping, or pasting it. You can also display an image hosted online or stored in the repository. Relative image paths are useful when the image should travel with the project; link to a README heading when readers need a stable jump point.
README workflow
- Save a descriptive filename, for example
readme-install-main.png. - Open the README editor in the repository.
- Drag the image into the editor or use its upload control.
- Add alt text that identifies the repository/page and visible action.
- Preview the rendered README at normal width and check mobile readability.
- Commit the image and README change to the intended branch.
Issues, pull requests, and discussions
Paste or drag the image into the comment editor, then explain what repository state it shows. For a review, include the file path, line context, and commit so the screenshot does not become detached from the code it illustrates.
Repeatable and automated captures
Navigate with GitHub CLI
The GitHub CLI can display repository details and README content with gh repo view OWNER/REPO. gh browse OWNER/REPO opens the repository in a browser, where you can apply the same revision, privacy, framing, and quality checks before capturing. CLI navigation improves repeatability; it does not replace visual verification.

Use a webpage-screenshot workflow
For documentation or CI, GitHub Marketplace’s Webpage Screenshot Action can capture a webpage, optionally run a script first, and save an image such as a README table. Pin the action version and configuration used by your workflow. Automated captures should explicitly select the branch or commit, wait for required content, and avoid exposing credentials in logs or screenshots.
When to automate
- One-off explanation: use a built-in region or window capture.
- Release documentation: script navigation and pin the revision.
- Many repositories: use a controlled job with stable viewport, zoom, wait conditions, and output naming.
- Audits: record URL, commit SHA, capture time, viewport, and tool version beside each image.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot shows the wrong code
Cause: the default branch changed or the browser was on a fork. Fix: return to the repository URL, verify owner, branch, tag, or commit, and recapture with that context visible.
Text is too small
Cause: a full-page image was reduced to fit. Fix: raise browser zoom, capture a smaller region, or split the page into labeled images. Do not rely on readers zooming a heavily compressed file.
Sticky headers or lazy images are missing
Cause: a browser page-capture command did not render content outside the viewport correctly. Fix: scroll through the page first, wait for images, then use window or region captures; inspect long captures for duplicated headers.

Cause: tokens, private tabs, notifications, or terminal windows were included. Fix: discard the file, revoke exposed credentials immediately, clean the frame, and capture again. Cropping after publication is not a substitute for revocation.

The upload is blurry or rejected
Cause: lossy compression, excessive dimensions, or an editor-specific limit. Fix: export a readable PNG, reduce only the unused margins, and preview the rendered image before committing. Keep a full-resolution original locally.

Can I screenshot a private GitHub repository?
Yes, if your browser session or capture service is authorized to view it. Treat every resulting image as sensitive and check that no private code, identifiers, or credentials are unintentionally shared.
