In Linux Mint’s Cinnamon edition, press Print (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Scr) to capture the whole screen. Use Shift+Print to select an area, or Alt+Print to capture the active window. Add Ctrl to copy the capture to the clipboard instead of saving it through the screenshot tool.
Linux Mint screenshot shortcuts at a glance
These are the default screenshot bindings for the Cinnamon desktop. The Print key may appear under a different label on your keyboard, but the combinations work the same way when that key sends the Print function.

Linux Mint’s Cinnamon user guide also documents Print Scrn for the desktop and Alt+Print Scrn for the current window. These shortcut defaults are specific to Cinnamon; Linux Mint also comes in MATE and Xfce editions, where names or bindings may differ.
Take a full-screen, window, or area screenshot
- Bring the desktop or application you want to capture into view. For a window capture, click the window first so it is focused.
- Press Print for the whole screen, Alt+Print for the active window, or Shift+Print to select a region.
- For an area capture, drag over the part of the screen you want and release to take the screenshot.
The screenshot tool handles the capture after you invoke its shortcut. If you choose a clipboard combination, there may not be a saved image file to locate: paste the result into an image editor, document, chat, or email with Ctrl+V.

Copy a screenshot directly to the clipboard
To paste rather than capture using the ordinary screenshot action, add Ctrl to the matching shortcut: Ctrl+Print for the screen, Ctrl+Alt+Print for the active window, and Ctrl+Shift+Print for a selected region. After taking it, open the destination and press Ctrl+V.
This is useful when you only need to share or insert an image and do not need to keep a separate screenshot file. If pasting does not work, first confirm that you used the clipboard version of the shortcut rather than its non-Ctrl equivalent.

Find the Print key on a laptop keyboard
Look for a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Scr, or a similar abbreviation. The label may be shared with another function. On some laptops, you may need to hold Fn as well—for example, try Fn+Print if pressing the labeled key alone does nothing. Whether Fn is needed depends on the laptop and keyboard layout, not on a universal Linux Mint setting.
Change or check screenshot shortcuts
If a shortcut does nothing or triggers a different action, inspect the keybindings in Cinnamon: open System Settings → Keyboard → Shortcuts, then look under System → Screenshots and Recording for the screenshot actions. The available names may be slightly different across Cinnamon versions.

From there, check whether the action has a key combination assigned and whether another shortcut is using the same keys. Cinnamon allows users to customize combinations, so a previous change can explain why the defaults no longer work. If you are using Mint MATE or Xfce, check that desktop’s keyboard-shortcut settings rather than assuming Cinnamon’s defaults apply.
Common problems and fixes
- Nothing happens: Confirm that the keyboard is sending the Print function. Try the laptop’s Fn modifier if applicable, then check the screenshot binding in Keyboard settings.
- The wrong thing happens: Verify that the intended window is focused for Alt+Print, or that you selected the intended area after pressing Shift+Print. If the result is still wrong, inspect the assigned binding for a customization or conflict.
- You cannot find the screenshot file: If you pressed a shortcut with Ctrl, the capture was copied to the clipboard. Paste it into an application with Ctrl+V.
- The shortcuts in a guide do not match your system: Check which Mint desktop environment you are running. The shortcut list here describes Cinnamon’s defaults, not guaranteed bindings for MATE or Xfce.
Optional screenshot applications
You do not need an additional application for the ordinary Cinnamon screenshot shortcuts. If you want a separate capture workflow, Linux Mint forum discussions mention GNOME Screenshot as an installable utility and KSnip as an option for annotation. Those are optional software choices, not requirements for using Print-key shortcuts.
