There is no single screenshot command that works on every computer. Use screencapture on macOS, choose a tool that matches your Linux display session (such as scrot on X11 or KDE Spectacle), or use wdcapture if you have Microsoft’s Windows Game Development Kit. The command, installed software, display environment, and save path all matter—especially for unattended scripts.
Choose a command for your operating system

These commands are not interchangeable. In particular, the documented scrot display option is for X, so do not assume it works as a general Wayland capture command. Pick the utility supported by the display system and test it in the same logged-in desktop session where it will run.
Take a screenshot from macOS Terminal
macOS includes the screencapture command. Because command-line flags can vary, first inspect the help on the Mac where the script will run:
screencapture -h
man screencaptureUse the syntax and options shown by that local help to specify the capture and destination. A screenshot is a file only if the command saves it to a file; do not assume that a Terminal command uses the same clipboard behavior as a keyboard shortcut.

Apple’s support guide describes the Screenshot app and screenshot shortcuts, rather than documenting command-line flags. It says screenshots default to the desktop unless the save location is changed, and some apps—including Apple TV—may not allow screenshots of their windows. The Screenshot app is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later; its documented controls include a timer and save-location selection. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, it also offers SDR PNG or HDR HEIF capture options. Those are Screenshot app details, not guarantees about screencapture flags. Apple’s screenshot guide explains the documented user-interface methods.
Capture a Linux screen with scrot on X11
On an X11 session with scrot installed, the simplest capture is:
scrot output.pngThe command writes the image to the named file in the current working directory. If a filename has no extension, the documented fallback is PNG; the extension can also be used to select the output format. The Debian testing manual documents the following useful options:

Use the options supported by the release actually installed: flags differ between scrot versions. Check scrot --help or the installed manual before putting them in a script. These instructions are for the X-oriented tool; they do not establish Wayland compatibility. The Debian testing scrot manual documents the command and options.

Use KDE Spectacle for desktop captures
KDE’s Spectacle can be started from a terminal with:
spectacleFor scripts, Spectacle offers a background mode intended to run without showing the GUI or requiring user interaction. Its command-line arguments depend on the installed version, so inspect them rather than inferring CLI flags from the desktop keyboard shortcuts:
spectacle --helpThe Spectacle handbook covers its command-line options and background operation. KDE also documents shortcuts for all monitors, the active window, and a rectangular region, but use the local CLI help to construct an automated command.
What works from Windows PowerShell?
The Windows command-line option established here is wdcapture.exe, documented in Microsoft’s Windows Game Development Kit (GDK). Microsoft’s documented form is:

Run it from PowerShell or another command shell only after confirming that the GDK and the tool are installed and appropriate for your system. The GDK documentation does not establish that wdcapture is present on an ordinary Windows PC or that PowerShell itself has a universally available built-in screenshot command. Make command-line screenshots reliable
- Use an explicit destination. Save to a full path when the command may run from a different working directory than expected. Confirm that the destination directory exists and is writable.
- Match the display session. Run an initial test while logged into the desktop session that the capture should show. Remote shells, scheduled jobs, and services may not see the same display as an interactive user.
- Decide whether interaction is acceptable. Region selection and window selection can require a person or a focused window. Use a documented background or noninteractive mode when a job must run unattended.
- Test multi-monitor behavior. Specify a display or monitor only with flags supported by the installed tool, then inspect the resulting image. Monitor numbering and desktop arrangement can matter.
- Check protected or restricted windows. Some applications may block capture. Apple specifically notes that certain apps, including Apple TV, may not permit screenshots of their windows.
- Verify the artifact. After the command exits, check that the file exists, is nonempty, and opens as the intended image format. For scripts, treat a missing or invalid file as a failed capture rather than silently continuing.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Command not found”
The selected utility is not installed or is not on the shell’s executable path. On Linux, install the appropriate package for your distribution if you want scrot; for KDE, check that Spectacle is installed. On Windows, verify that the GDK-provided wdcapture is installed. macOS has the native screencapture command, but confirm its availability in the shell environment.
The output file is missing or in the wrong folder
A relative filename is saved relative to the command’s current directory, which may differ in a scheduled job or script. Use an absolute path, create the parent directory first, and verify write access.
The command waits for input
An interactive area or window selection is unsuitable for an unattended task. Replace it with a fixed region or another noninteractive mode supported by the installed utility; for Spectacle, check its background options with spectacle --help.

The captured screen is blank or does not match the desktop
Test the command from the logged-in graphical session, then confirm that it targets the correct display server and monitor. A command designed for X11 should not be treated as a general Wayland solution. Remote login and service contexts may not have access to the same visible desktop.
The command rejects an option
Flags can vary by release. Consult the installed command’s help or manual instead of copying an option from a different version’s example. This is especially important for scrot and the command-line options of Spectacle.
A particular window cannot be captured
The application may restrict screenshots, or the requested window may not be visible to the capture session. Try a permitted target and check the application and operating-system guidance; do not assume every window can be captured.
