To take a screenshot as a JPEG, capture it with your device’s normal shortcut, then open the image and use Save As or Export to choose JPEG/JPG. Most devices capture screenshots as PNG (or, on some Apple workflows, HEIF), so JPEG is usually an export step rather than the original capture format.
Why your screenshot is not already a JPEG
Operating systems generally favor lossless PNG for screenshots because it keeps text, icons, and sharp interface edges exact. Apple documents PNG for screenshots and HEIF in some HDR workflows. Windows screenshot utilities and Android phones can vary by app, manufacturer, and version. The file extension alone does not determine the format: renaming image.png to image.jpg does not convert the encoded image.
Use JPEG when a website, form, printer, or other service specifically requires JPG/JPEG, or when a smaller file is more useful than pixel-perfect text. Keep PNG for crisp user-interface text, documentation, archival copies, and later editing. JPEG uses lossy compression, so export quality matters.
Windows: capture first, then export to JPEG
Capture the entire screen
- Press Windows logo + PrtScn. Windows saves the image in Pictures > Screenshots.
- If your keyboard has no PrtScn key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on applicable hardware.
- Open the resulting PNG in Paint, Photos, or another installed image editor.
- Choose Save As or Export, select JPEG/JPG, choose a destination, and confirm the quality setting if the app offers one.
Capture a region, window, or full screen
- Press Windows logo + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool.
- Select rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen mode and make the capture.
- The result is copied to the clipboard and appears in Snipping Tool. Open its editing window, choose the save command, and select JPEG if that version of the app provides it.
- If Snipping Tool only offers PNG, save the capture, open it in Paint or another editor, and use Save As > JPEG picture.
Menu names can differ between Windows releases and installed apps. Do not delete the original PNG until you have checked that the JPEG contains the complete image.

Mac: export a screenshot from Preview
- Use the built-in Screenshot shortcuts or Screenshot utility to capture the required area, window, or display. If the utility saves a PNG, locate that file in Finder.
- Double-click the image to open it in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider if needed, select a filename and folder, and click Save.
Apple’s screen-capture framework supports saving an image as HEIC, JPEG, or PNG, so an application built on that framework may offer JPEG directly. The Screenshot utility’s available choices vary by macOS version. For screenshots containing small type, inspect the exported file at 100% zoom; compression artifacts are more visible around high-contrast text.
iPhone and iPad: convert the PNG or HEIF copy
Take the screenshot
- Face ID iPhone: press and quickly release the side button and volume-up button together.
- Touch ID iPhone or iPad: use the side or top button together with the Home button combination for that model.
Apple states that screenshots use PNG and screen recordings use HEVC; in HDR mode, screenshots can use HEIF. Your screenshot is stored in Photos under Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.
Export a JPEG copy
- Open Photos and select the screenshot.
- Tap Share, then choose an editing or conversion app that offers JPEG export. Depending on the app, the command may be Save to Files, Export, Convert, or Save copy.
- Select JPEG/JPG, choose quality if offered, and save the new file. Keep the original in Photos if you may need the lossless version later.
If the receiving service accepts PNG, uploading the original avoids an extra conversion and preserves sharper text. If it accepts only JPEG, verify the converted copy before attaching it.
Android: use your gallery’s export or convert command
Capture and find the image
- Press Power + Volume down simultaneously. On some phones, hold Power and tap Screenshot.
- Open Google Photos and choose Collections > On this device > Screenshots. On phones without Photos, open the Gallery app’s Screenshots folder.
Save a JPEG copy
- Open the screenshot and tap Edit, the three-dot menu, or Share.
- Choose Save copy, Export, or Convert, depending on the manufacturer and Android version.
- Select JPEG/JPG, set quality or dimensions if available, and save it as a separate file.
Android does not have one universal gallery interface. If your gallery cannot convert formats, use an installed image editor or converter, and check its privacy policy before uploading sensitive screenshots.

Choosing JPEG quality and dimensions
When JPEG is the right choice
- A destination explicitly rejects PNG or HEIF.
- You need broad compatibility with older software or a system that accepts only .jpg.
- You are sharing a photographic or mixed-content screen where a smaller file is useful.
When PNG is better
- The screenshot is mostly text, diagrams, code, or flat-color interface elements.
- You need exact pixels for a bug report, tutorial, legal record, or archival copy.
- You expect to edit and re-export the image repeatedly.
There is no universal percentage by which JPEG will shrink a screenshot. File size depends on dimensions, colors, gradients, photographs, and the quality setting. Export a copy, compare its readability at 100% zoom, and retain the original when fidelity matters.
How to convert an existing screenshot safely
- Make a duplicate of the original PNG or HEIF file.
- Open the duplicate in a trusted editor.
- Use the app’s actual Export or Save As command and choose JPEG.
- Use a descriptive filename such as
login-error.jpg; do not merely change the extension. - Reopen the JPEG and check cropping, text, transparency, and color before sending it.
JPEG has no transparency channel. A transparent PNG will be composited against a background during export, usually white or the editor’s selected color.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a JPEG of a web page rather than your local device screen, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from one request. It can output PNG, JPEG, or WebP, and its cleanup steps accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The basic request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Change the output filename and request options for your desired JPEG output. The same endpoint works from Python:

Text has colored halos or blocky edges
Those are JPEG artifacts. Re-export at higher quality, avoid repeated conversions, or submit PNG.
The screenshot is cropped
Check whether you captured a selection or window instead of the full display. Recapture, or crop only after confirming the original dimensions.
The image has an unexpected background
JPEG cannot preserve transparency. Choose a deliberate background color before export, or retain PNG when transparency is required.

A website rejects the upload
Confirm that the file is genuinely JPEG, not a renamed PNG, and check the site’s maximum dimensions and file-size limits. Export a new copy at a lower quality only after preserving the original.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is JPG different from JPEG?
No. JPG and JPEG identify the same image format; the three-letter extension became common on systems that limited extensions to three characters.
Can I change a screenshot’s format without losing the original?
Yes. Export a duplicate as JPEG and keep the original PNG or HEIF file unchanged.
Why does my phone save screenshots in different formats?
The result depends on the device model, operating-system version, HDR setting, manufacturer gallery, and capture app.
