On a Mac, use the built-in screenshot shortcuts, then inspect the saved result because Apple’s guide does not promise that several displays will become one combined image. For a cross-display area, test the selection on your particular layout; if it does not span monitors reliably, capture the full desktop or each display and assemble the result afterward.
Choose what you actually need to capture
“Across multiple monitors” can mean three different things. Decide the target before pressing a shortcut, because the most dependable built-in mode depends on the scope.
| Goal | Best starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Everything visible on the desktop | Full-screen capture | Whether the operating system saves one wide image or separate images for your displays |
| One monitor only | Choose that display’s full-screen or window capture | That the correct monitor is selected, especially after changing the primary display |
| A rectangle that crosses a monitor boundary | Rectangular or freeform selection | Whether the selection tool follows the pointer across your particular monitor arrangement |
| One application window | Window capture | That the application is on the intended display and is not blocking screenshots |
Before saving or sharing, open the resulting image. A capture can look correct at a glance while omitting a display, cropping at the boundary, or producing separate files instead of one panorama.
Prepare the monitors before capturing
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify to show the number on each physical monitor.
- Drag the display tiles until their on-screen arrangement matches the monitors on your desk. Align the top or bottom edges if that is how the displays are positioned.
- Move the pointer from one screen to the next. Microsoft recommends this test because it confirms that Windows understands the arrangement you intend to capture.
These display checks are documented in Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guide. The same page notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The shortcuts below are still documented for Windows 10, but Windows 11 should be your priority on a supported system.

Mac
macOS does not require a separate monitor-arrangement step for the shortcuts below. Confirm that every display is awake and showing the desktop, close sensitive windows, and decide whether you want a complete screen or a selected portion. Apple’s instructions also warn that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows.
Take the screenshot on Windows
Capture the entire desktop with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- In the Snipping Tool overlay, choose Full-screen.
- Let the capture complete, then select the notification or open Snipping Tool to review it.
- Edit if necessary and save the image from Snipping Tool.
Microsoft documents the shortcut and the region, window, and full-screen modes in its Snipping Tool instructions. Full-screen is the logical first choice when the goal is to include every connected display. The tool copies the capture into Snipping Tool, where you can edit and save it.
Capture a cross-monitor region
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose Rectangular snip for a straight-edged area or Freeform snip for an irregular outline.
- Start on one display and drag toward the other. Keep the pointer moving through the boundary rather than releasing at the edge.
- Review the result in Snipping Tool. If the selection stopped at the first monitor, use a full-screen capture and crop it, or make separate captures of the required displays and combine them in an image editor.
The official Microsoft pages describe the selection modes but do not promise identical cross-display behavior for every monitor geometry, scaling combination, or Windows build. Treat the first attempt as a test rather than assuming that a single drag will always create one seamless rectangle.

Use Print Screen for a clipboard snapshot
Microsoft also documents Print Screen (PrtSc) as a way to take a static snapshot of the entire screen and place it on the clipboard. After pressing it, paste into an image editor, document, or chat and inspect which displays were included. If you need a named file and editing controls, Snipping Tool is the clearer workflow.
Window captures and mixed-monitor workspaces
Use the window mode in Snipping Tool when the content you need is a single application. A window can be on either monitor, but the capture follows the window rather than the whole desktop. Move the window to the intended display before opening the overlay, and check the title bar or app content in the preview before saving.

Capture a screen
Apple’s built-in controls are:
- Shift-Command-3 captures the screen.
- Shift-Command-4 changes the pointer to a crosshair so you can drag around a portion.
- Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot app and its capture controls on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later.
Use the screen capture when you want the broadest desktop view, or the crosshair when you need only a region. With multiple displays connected, open the saved result immediately. Apple’s Take a screenshot on Mac guide lists the shortcuts and Screenshot app, but it does not explicitly state whether a full-screen command across several displays is stored as one combined image or as separate captures. Do not assume the output format; verify it on the Mac and macOS version you are using.

Capture a selected area that crosses displays
- Press Shift-Command-4, or press Shift-Command-5 and choose the selected-area control.
- Drag across the intended area, including the monitor boundary.
- Release, then open the resulting file or files.
- If the selection does not cross the boundary cleanly, capture the complete screen output and crop it, or capture each display separately and assemble the images.
Apple does not provide a detailed guarantee for every cross-monitor selection layout in the cited guide. The inspection step is therefore part of the method, not an optional check.
When a Mac window will not capture
Some applications restrict window screenshots. Apple specifically gives Apple TV as an example. If a protected window appears black or is absent, capture the surrounding desktop only when that is permitted, or use the application’s own export or sharing function instead of trying to bypass its restriction.
Make one usable image from several displays
There are two practical outcomes after the built-in capture:
Rank #4
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- One image already contains the required area: crop away unrelated desktop space, add annotations, and save a copy in the format your recipient needs.
- The operating system produced separate images or stopped at a monitor boundary: keep the originals, then place them on a larger canvas in an image editor. Align common edges and check text at the join before exporting.
Do not discard the original captures until you have checked alignment. Different display resolutions, scaling percentages, portrait orientation, and bezel gaps can make a stitched image look misaligned even when the screenshots themselves are correct.
Clipboard, files, and privacy checks
Clipboard versus saved file
Clipboard captures are convenient for a quick paste but can be lost when another application replaces the clipboard contents. Save from Snipping Tool or open the screenshot file on macOS before closing the capture workflow. Give the final file a descriptive name that records the monitor scope, such as desktop-all-displays-2026-09-29.
Review sensitive content
Multiple-monitor screenshots often include a second display that was outside your attention: email previews, password managers, notification banners, or an unrelated customer record. Review all edges and corners at full size before uploading or sending the image. Crop or redact anything that the recipient does not need.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only one monitor appears | The capture mode targeted a single screen, or the operating system saved displays separately. | Use Windows full-screen mode or the Mac screen shortcut, then inspect every output file. If the result is still separate, combine the captures in an editor. |
| A rectangular drag stops at the monitor edge | Cross-display selection is not behaving as expected for the current layout, scaling, or OS build. | Use a full-screen capture and crop, or capture each display independently. Do not assume a second drag will repair the first selection. |
| The wrong monitor is included | Display tiles do not match the physical arrangement, or the window moved after the setup check. | On Windows, return to Settings > System > Display, use Identify, rearrange the tiles, and test pointer movement again. |
| The screenshot is in the clipboard but nowhere on disk | Print Screen or a selection was copied without being saved. | Paste it into an image editor and save, or repeat the capture through Snipping Tool and use its save command. |
| A Mac app window is black or missing | The application restricts window screenshots. | Use an allowed export or sharing feature, or capture permitted desktop content instead. Apple lists Apple TV as an example of a restricting app. |
| One display is blank before capture | The monitor is asleep, disconnected, or not recognized by the operating system. | Wake the display, check the cable or dock, and confirm that it appears in the system’s display settings before capturing. |
| The stitched result looks misaligned | Displays use different resolutions, scaling, orientation, or physical offsets. | Use the original files, align a shared edge on a larger canvas, and inspect text and cursor positions at 100% zoom before exporting. |
Quality, performance, and cost considerations
- Pixel count: Capturing several high-resolution displays creates a much larger image than capturing one monitor. Allow time for the preview to open and for the file to save.
- Scaling: Mixed display scaling can make text appear at different sizes in a stitched image. Preserve the originals so you can crop or resize without repeatedly recompressing them.
- Reliability: A full-screen capture is usually simpler than trying to maintain a precise drag across a boundary. Always inspect the output because neither the cited Microsoft nor Apple guidance guarantees one combined image for every multi-monitor arrangement.
- Cost: Windows and macOS methods use features built into the operating system; no capture hardware or subscription is required for this desktop workflow.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a web page rather than the physical desktops in front of you, ScreenshotNeo can return a page image or PDF through one request. It captures a URL, not your local multi-monitor desktop, so keep using the Windows or Mac steps above for an entire workstation.
