To capture only part of a page in Firefox, open the page and press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. Drag across the area you want, adjust the selection, then choose Download or Copy. You can also right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot.
This guide explains the built-in region tool, keyboard controls, element-specific captures, full-page alternatives, troubleshooting, and an automated option for developers.
Capture a custom region in Firefox
- Open the webpage in Firefox and scroll to the content you need.
- Open Firefox’s screenshot interface with Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click on a Mac) an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot.
- Drag over the portion of the page to capture. Firefox highlights page parts under the pointer, so you can click a highlighted component instead of drawing a rectangle yourself.
- Fine-tune the selection with the marker points around its edge. Drag a corner or edge until the exact content is inside the box.
- Choose Download to save the image in Firefox’s default download folder, or choose Copy to put it on the clipboard for pasting into another application.
Press Esc, or select the X control, to cancel without saving.

Choose the right Firefox capture mode
| What you need | Firefox option | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| An arbitrary rectangle | Drag a selection | You define the exact region, including parts of several page components. |
| One recognizable page component | Automatic page-part highlight | Move the pointer over the page and click the highlighted part Firefox identifies. |
| Everything currently visible | Save visible | Captures the current viewport rather than content below or above it. |
| The entire document | Save full page | Captures the page from top to bottom, including content outside the current viewport. |
| A specific DOM element | Developer Tools Screenshot Node | Saves the inspected element from the page structure to Firefox’s Downloads folder. |
The visible and full-page commands appear in Firefox’s screenshot interface. Use a custom drag when the boundary is visual rather than tied to one HTML element.
Keyboard controls for accurate selections
Mouse dragging is fastest, but Firefox’s screenshot interface also supports keyboard operation:
- Arrow keys: move the crosshair by one pixel.
- Shift + Arrow: move the crosshair by ten pixels.
- Space: start or end region selection.
- Enter: select the region currently under the pointer, or start a selection when no region is hovered.
- Arrow keys on a selected corner or region: move the focused edge or selection.
- Shift + Arrow on a selected corner or region: move it in larger increments.
- Ctrl/Command + Arrow: jump a selected corner or region to a viewport edge.
Mozilla notes that moving the crosshair does not work on Wayland. If you are using a Wayland session and the crosshair appears stuck, use the mouse selection or switch to another desktop session rather than assuming the page is broken.
Screenshot one HTML element with Developer Tools
For a button, card, image, or other discrete element, selecting its DOM node can be more reliable than drawing a rectangle.
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and switch to the Inspector.
- In the HTML pane, locate the element you want.
- Open that element’s context menu.
- Choose Screenshot Node.
Firefox saves the resulting image to the browser’s Downloads directory. This method follows the element’s page structure, so it is useful when the component moves, has a precise boundary, or is difficult to isolate with a pointer.

Make a partial screenshot cleaner before saving
Remove unrelated content
Resize the selection markers so browser chrome, neighboring cards, ads, or empty margins are outside the box. If the target is a single component, try the automatic highlight or Screenshot Node route instead of trimming a large rectangle.
Capture content that is just below the fold
Scroll until the desired content is visible, then use the region tool. If the requirement is actually the entire page, choose Save full page; stitching several partial captures can introduce inconsistent scroll positions and duplicated content.
Preserve text quality
Keep the browser at a sensible zoom level before capturing. A selection can only preserve the pixels Firefox renders in the viewport; increasing the image later cannot recreate detail that was not captured.
Check what will be copied
Copy places the image on the clipboard, which is convenient for email, documents, and chat. Clipboard permissions or the destination application may affect pasting, so use Download when you need a file that can be attached or archived.

Troubleshooting Firefox partial screenshots
The shortcut does nothing
- Click the page first and try the shortcut again; another application may have focus.
- Use the context-menu route: right-click an empty page area and choose Take Screenshot.
- On macOS, use Command+Shift+S, not the Windows/Linux shortcut.
- On Windows or Linux, use Ctrl+Shift+S.
Firefox selects the wrong component
Move the pointer away from automatically highlighted regions and drag the rectangle manually. For a precise page component, select its node in the Inspector and use Screenshot Node.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The captured area is slightly too large or too small
Use the marker points around the selection edge. Keyboard movement is useful for pixel-level correction: focus a corner or the region, then use an arrow key; hold Shift for larger steps.
The crosshair will not move
Mozilla specifically documents this limitation on Wayland. Use mouse dragging, or run Firefox in a session where crosshair movement is supported.
Nothing appears after choosing Copy
Try pasting into a simple image-capable application first. If the clipboard is unavailable or the destination does not accept images, choose Download and attach the saved file instead.
The page needs a full-height capture
A partial selection only covers the region you define. Reopen the screenshot interface and choose Save full page for the complete document, or Save visible for only the current viewport.

If you need repeatable screenshots in a script, build pipeline, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns a page image or PDF from one HTTP request. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Privacy, reliability, and file handling
Firefox’s built-in capture happens in the browser session where you opened the page, making it practical for a one-off screenshot of content you can view. Before sharing, inspect the image for names, account details, private URLs, notifications, or other information outside the intended region.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
For automation, set explicit waits when a page renders asynchronously, use a selector wait when the target element is not immediately present, and choose a cache TTL deliberately. Custom headers, cookies, user agents, timezone, and geolocation can reproduce the conditions under which the target page renders. If a page fails, distinguish a browser rendering problem from a bot check, timeout, blank response, or other page verdict rather than silently treating an empty image as success.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Firefox capture a selection that crosses several separate page sections?
Yes. Drag a rectangle around the complete area. Automatic highlighting is optimized for individual page parts; manual selection is better when the region spans multiple components.
