Press and release Shift-Command-3 together. macOS captures the entire screen and normally saves an image to your desktop. To put the capture on the clipboard instead, hold Control as well: Control-Shift-Command-3. Apple documents these shortcuts in its current Mac screenshot guidance: Take a screenshot on Mac.
Capture the entire Mac screen in one shortcut
The direct shortcut is the quickest method when you want everything currently visible on the display.
- Arrange windows, menus and the desktop exactly as you want them to appear.
- Press and release Shift-Command-3 at the same time.
- Wait for the capture to finish. macOS usually shows a thumbnail briefly in a corner, then saves the image to the desktop.
- Click the thumbnail if you want to mark up or edit the screenshot before saving. If you do not click it, leave it alone and the file will be written automatically.
Apple’s documented wording is to press and then release Shift, Command and 3 together. The shortcut captures the full screen rather than a selected window or rectangle.

Where macOS saves the screenshot
The default save destination is the desktop. The default filename begins with Screen Shot and includes the date and time. If you cannot see a new file, click the desktop and sort or view its contents, then check whether you changed the destination in Screenshot’s Options menu.

To choose another folder, press Shift-Command-5, select Options, and pick a location under the save section. The same menu controls whether a floating thumbnail appears, whether the pointer is shown, and whether a timer is used. Apple lists these controls in its Mac User Guide for screenshots and screen recordings.
Copy instead of saving
Use Control-Shift-Command-3 when the next step is pasting into Mail, Messages, a document or an image editor. Switch to the destination app and press Command-V. This clipboard workflow is separate from the normal desktop-file workflow, so do not expect a file if you used the Control variant.
Use Screenshot when you need control
The Screenshot app is built into macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. Press Shift-Command-5 to open its toolbar. It offers tools for the entire screen, a particular window or a selected portion, plus recording controls.

Change the destination, timer or thumbnail
- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Click Options.
- Choose a save location instead of the desktop if required.
- Set a timer when you need time to open a menu, position a popover or move your hands out of the frame.
- Turn the floating thumbnail on or off.
- Choose whether the pointer should be visible in the result, where that option is available for the selected capture mode.
- Close the toolbar and capture with the full-screen button, or use the keyboard shortcut again.
Use this route when repeatable settings matter. For a one-off image with no special requirements, Shift-Command-3 has fewer steps.
Capture a window or a portion instead
Although the title shortcut captures the whole display, Screenshot’s toolbar lets you switch to a window tool or a rectangular selection. Select the desired tool, follow the on-screen highlight, and click to capture. This avoids cropping a full-screen image later when only one application or region is needed.
What appears in a full-screen capture
The image reflects the screen at the instant macOS captures it: open windows, the menu bar, Dock state and any visible desktop content. Arrange sensitive information first, because a full-screen image can include anything visible on that display.

Some applications do not permit screenshots of their windows. Apple specifically names Apple TV as an example. A blank, black or incomplete result in a protected app is therefore not necessarily a shortcut error; the application may restrict capture.
macOS version and format qualifications
Screenshot is available on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple says Screenshot can offer SDR (PNG) or HDR (HEIF) capture formats. Both the operating-system version and model support are required, so those choices are not universal on every Mac.
Troubleshoot a missing or unexpected screenshot
Nothing happens when you press the keys
- Press and release the keys together rather than holding them for several seconds.
- Check that you are using the Command key, not Control, for the normal save shortcut.
- Try Shift-Command-5. If its toolbar opens, use the full-screen capture button and inspect the Options menu.
The thumbnail disappeared
The thumbnail is temporary. If you did not click it, macOS continues saving the image according to the selected destination. Look on the desktop or in the folder shown under Screenshot’s Options.

The file is not on the desktop
Your save location may have been changed previously. Open Screenshot with Shift-Command-5, choose Options, and read the selected destination. Also check whether you used the Control variant, which places the image on the clipboard rather than creating the usual file.
The image is black or incomplete
Retry outside the protected application. Some apps, including Apple TV according to Apple’s documentation, may block window screenshots. If other apps capture normally, the restriction is likely specific to that software or media surface.
You need a timed capture
Open Shift-Command-5, select Options, choose a timer, and then start the full-screen capture. This gives you time to open a menu or position a window before the image is taken.

You need the pointer visible
Open Shift-Command-5 and inspect Options for pointer visibility. The available pointer setting depends on the capture mode and macOS version.

- Review the entire image for passwords, private messages, customer data and unrelated tabs.
- Confirm whether the file should remain on the desktop or move to a controlled folder.
- Use the clipboard shortcut when you do not want a persistent file.
- For repeatable documentation, set the destination and pointer behavior once in Screenshot’s Options.
- For website documentation, use a URL capture service rather than photographing your local desktop; the resulting image represents the page requested by the service, not your Mac’s current windows.
