Use a category-specific archive template, not a site-wide color setting. On a block theme, create a Category Archives template for the selected category in the Site Editor. On a classic theme, add a PHP file named category-{slug}.php, such as category-news.php. Choose block-level controls or theme.json only when the change is limited to a block or applies across the site.
First identify your theme type
The implementation depends on whether your site uses a block theme or a classic theme. A block theme uses blocks for site areas such as the header, content, navigation and footer, and provides the Site Editor. A classic theme uses PHP template files and the traditional template hierarchy. You can confirm the available editing interface under Appearance: block themes expose Editor, while classic themes commonly expose Customize and theme-file workflows. The Customizer is not available in a block theme unless a plugin or theme specifically enables it. See the official descriptions of block themes and working with themes.
Block themes: create a template for one category
The Site Editor can assign a Category Archives template to one category while another template remains the fallback for other categories. This is the point-and-click method for giving one archive a different layout, such as a grid instead of the usual list.

- Choose Add New Template (the wording can vary slightly by WordPress version) and select Category Archives.
- When prompted for the scope, select the individual category you want to change. Do not choose All Categories unless you intend to replace the archive design for every category.
- Arrange the template’s blocks. Typical archive elements include the query/content loop, post title, featured image, excerpt, post metadata and pagination.
- Select Save and confirm the template changes. Visit that category archive in a logged-out window to verify the result.
Use an All Categories template as the general fallback, then add individual category templates only for exceptions. The official Template Editor documentation describes this category-specific and fallback workflow.

Why a category template changes more than colors
A template controls structure: which blocks appear, their order, the number of columns, and the placement of archive content. That makes it appropriate when one category needs a genuinely different presentation. It is more targeted than changing global styles, and it avoids forcing the same layout on unrelated archives.
Classic themes: use the category template hierarchy
In a classic theme, create a PHP template whose filename contains the category’s slug. For a category whose slug is news, the conventional file is:

category-news.phpPlace the file in the active theme (preferably a child theme so updates do not overwrite it), then build the archive markup using the theme’s existing loop and functions. WordPress will use the slug-specific file for that category. The documented convention and hierarchy are covered in Taxonomy Templates.

Creating a separate copy for every category can produce duplicated code and makes later design changes harder to maintain. A slug-specific file should contain only the markup or logic that is truly exceptional; otherwise let the broader category or archive template handle the page.

How WordPress decides which classic template wins
WordPress checks the most specific matching category template first, then falls back to broader archive templates and finally index.php if no suitable file exists. The exact order is documented in the Template Hierarchy reference. A missing or misspelled slug in the filename is a common reason the specialized design does not appear.

This order helps explain why a broad archive design is appearing: WordPress may be using category.html, archive.html or index.html because no more-specific template exists. The developer reference is Template Hierarchy.

theme.json configures global settings and styles and can register templates and template parts; it is not a substitute for assigning a different archive structure to one category. Read the Global Settings and Styles documentation before changing it.

If you only need to adjust a Categories block, edit that block and use the controls your theme exposes for color, typography, dimensions, borders and advanced settings. Those controls affect the block being edited, not the complete archive template. The available controls are theme-dependent; see the Categories block documentation.
Common failure points
The category-specific design never appears
- Check that the selected category’s slug is correct; the slug can differ from its visible name.
- In a block theme, confirm that you created a template for the individual category rather than only an All Categories template.
- In a classic theme, verify that the PHP file is in the active theme or child theme and follows the exact
category-{slug}.phpnaming convention. - Review the template hierarchy to see whether a more-specific file or editor template is taking precedence.
- Clear any page or server cache, then test the archive while logged out.
The change affects every category
You likely edited a shared category/archive template, an All Categories template, or a global style. Move the exception into the individual category template and leave shared defaults in the broader template.
The editor has no category-template option
That usually indicates a classic theme or a theme that does not expose the expected block-template features. Use the classic PHP hierarchy, or switch to a block theme only if that change fits the site’s broader maintenance plan; do not assume the Customizer can provide a category archive template in a block theme.
Practical decision guide
- Need a different grid, header, loop or metadata arrangement for one archive? Use a category-specific archive template.
- Need the same typography, colors or spacing throughout the site? Use the theme’s global settings and styles, commonly configured through
theme.json. - Need one Categories block to look different? Use that block’s supported controls.
- Prefer not to edit code? Use the Site Editor route when the active theme is a block theme.
- Comfortable maintaining theme files? A classic theme can use
category-{slug}.php, while keeping shared code in broader templates to reduce duplication.
What WordPress supports
WordPress’s documentation explicitly describes using template files and the Loop to make one category’s posts look different from another category’s posts. The implementation is therefore a template decision first: identify the theme architecture, target the category specifically, and reserve global style settings for changes that are actually global.
