To stream VLC to a Chromecast-compatible receiver, connect the computer or Android device and receiver to the same local network, open your media in VLC, then select Playback → Renderer and choose the Chromecast. On Android, use the Cast or renderer control shown while media is playing.
This is VLC’s built-in media-streaming feature—not Chrome’s screen-mirroring function. The exact result depends on your VLC version, receiver, network, media format, and subtitle type.
Quick answer
- Put VLC and the Chromecast-compatible receiver on the same non-guest Wi-Fi or wired network.
- Open the video or audio file in VLC.
- On desktop, choose Playback → Renderer.
- Select your Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or Google Cast-enabled television.
- Start or resume playback.
VLC normally remains the control point, so keep the source device powered on and connected while playback continues.

- VLC installed from VideoLAN or the relevant official app store.
- A powered-on Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, or television with Google Cast built in.
- The source device and receiver on the same local network.
- A network that allows local-device discovery and traffic.
- A recent VLC release. VideoLAN’s desktop download page lists VLC 3.0.23 as of August 18, 2026; mobile version numbers and interfaces differ.
“Chromecast” can mean several generations of hardware. Treat Google TV Streamer and built-in Google Cast televisions as Chromecast-compatible receivers, but do not assume every VLC release behaves identically with every receiver.

Stream from VLC on Windows, macOS, or Linux
1. Check the network
Connect both devices to the same home network. The same Wi-Fi name is not always enough: guest networks, client isolation, separate VLANs, multicast filtering, VPNs, and some Wi-Fi extenders can prevent discovery. Google also recommends a strong connection for casting. See Google’s Chromecast casting guidance.
If possible, disable the computer’s VPN temporarily and avoid guest Wi-Fi. Allow VLC to communicate on private or home networks when your operating system firewall asks.
2. Open the file in VLC
Open a local video or audio file in VLC. Starting with a simple local file is preferable to troubleshooting an internet stream or network share.

Use this desktop menu:
Playback → Renderer → [your Chromecast device]The wording or capitalization can vary by operating system, translation, or VLC release. Choose Renderer; this is different from VLC’s Media → Stream wizard.
VLC 3.x includes support for distant renderers, including Chromecast. Select the receiver, then start or resume playback.
4. Stop casting
Return to Playback → Renderer and choose the local output, which may be named Default, Local, or something similar. Closing VLC also ends its renderer session.

Linux discovery notes
Linux distributions can differ more than Windows and macOS in how Chromecast devices are discovered. VideoLAN’s Arch Linux documentation mentions libmicrodns for Chromecast discovery, protobuf for streaming support, and Avahi as an alternative DNS-SD/mDNS mechanism.

Do not copy Arch-specific package commands blindly into Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, or another distribution. An incompatible combination of discovery services can prevent the receiver from appearing. If the device is missing only on Linux, check your distribution’s VLC packages and mDNS/Avahi configuration.

Stream from VLC on Android
- Install or update VLC from the official Android app listing.
- Put the Android device and receiver on the same network.
- Open a local file in VLC.
- While playback is visible, look for the Cast or renderer icon, commonly shown with the Google Cast symbol.
- Select the Chromecast-compatible receiver.
- Start playback if it does not begin automatically.
VideoLAN’s VLC for Android project documents casting and streaming to distant renderers, including Chromecast and UPnP renderers. Mobile controls can move or change labels between releases.
Android casting support should not be used as proof that the iPhone or iPad version offers the same feature. Check the current iOS release before relying on VLC casting from an Apple device.
VLC casting is not the same as screen mirroring
With VLC’s Renderer feature, VLC acts as the media source and controls a remote renderer. Its Chromecast workflow uses HTTP internally and may proxy or transcode some inputs into a form the receiver can access. The computer therefore usually needs to remain awake, connected, and available.

This differs from mirroring, where the computer renders the picture and sends a copy of its screen. Renderer casting can be more efficient, but it also introduces receiver compatibility, HTTP access, and transcoding requirements.

Which files work best?
A useful diagnostic file is a moderate-bitrate MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio. If that plays but your original file does not, the problem is probably media compatibility or transcoding rather than network discovery.
VLC can open many codecs and containers locally, but that does not guarantee that the receiver can decode every file directly or that VLC can transcode it smoothly in real time. Problems are more likely with:
- HEVC/H.265 or AV1 files on receivers with limited support.
- Very high-bitrate or 4K video.
- DTS and other unusual audio codecs.
- MKV files with unusual tracks.
- HDR, interlaced, variable-frame-rate, or damaged media.
- DRM-protected video.
VideoLAN says VLC can stream formats that Chromecast does not natively support, but this is not a guarantee of successful playback for every file. Transcoding can consume substantial CPU or GPU resources.
If playback stutters
- Try a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate copy.
- Test an H.264/AAC MP4.
- Close CPU- or GPU-intensive applications.
- Test VLC’s hardware-decoding setting.
- Use Ethernet for the computer or receiver where practical.
- Prevent the computer from sleeping.
- Stop other heavy network activity.
Do not infer a universal bitrate or CPU limit. Performance depends on the file, VLC build, operating system, receiver, network, and available hardware.

Subtitles may not appear
Subtitles are one of the main limitations of VLC-to-Chromecast casting. Subtitles that appear during local VLC playback may not be transferred or rendered correctly on the receiver.

External SRT files, embedded tracks, styled subtitles, and subtitles rendered during transcoding can behave differently. Public user reports describe missing-subtitle problems, but there is no basis for promising that subtitles are universally unsupported—or universally reliable—on every platform and receiver.
If subtitles are essential:
- Confirm they work during local VLC playback.
- Try a simple SRT file or a different embedded track.
- Test without subtitles to determine whether they are causing the failure.
- Burn the subtitles into a new video when reliable display matters most.
- Use a player or media server with explicit receiver-side subtitle support.
Burning subtitles requires re-encoding and removes the normal ability to toggle or change subtitle tracks.

The Chromecast does not appear under Renderer
- Confirm both devices are on the same main local network.
- Leave guest Wi-Fi and disable any VPN temporarily.
- Restart VLC.
- Restart the receiver.
- Allow VLC through the firewall on private or home networks.
- Check the router for AP isolation, client isolation, VLAN separation, or multicast filtering.
- Temporarily test security software, then restore protection.
- Update VLC and the receiver.
- Restart the router if other local devices also fail to discover one another.
On Linux, inspect the distribution-specific mDNS, Avahi, libmicrodns, and VLC package configuration.
The receiver appears, but playback never starts
Try a local H.264/AAC MP4. If that works, the original file may require unsupported decoding or real-time transcoding. Other possibilities include a blocked HTTP stream, an unavailable source path, a lost network connection, or DRM.
There is a black screen or only audio
This commonly indicates a video codec, profile, HDR, color-format, or transcoding problem. Test a lower-resolution file with standard H.264 video and stereo AAC audio, then test again without subtitles.

Audio plays but video fails
Check whether the original uses HEVC, AV1, unusual HDR, or a high-efficiency video profile. Audio working proves that the basic session exists; it does not prove that the receiver can decode the video.
VLC disconnects or buffers
Check Wi-Fi strength, network congestion, transcoding load, computer sleep settings, and receiver stability. A short local test file helps separate network problems from media-specific problems.
Chrome fallback options
Chrome can cast a local file opened in a browser tab, or mirror the computer screen through Cast → Sources → Cast screen. These are fallbacks around VLC, not VLC’s Renderer feature.
Google specifically says VLC does not work as a Chrome casting plugin. Tab casting can send tab audio to the television; screen mirroring may leave audio playing on the computer. Browser casting can also be less capable with unusual codecs, subtitles, and large files.

When VLC is the right tool—and when it is not
VLC is a good choice when you already have a file on a Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android device, want a free open-source player, need broad local format support, and do not mind leaving the source device available.
Consider a media-server application, direct USB or network playback, or another receiver-aware player when you need reliable subtitles, a television-native experience, multiple household users, automatic libraries and metadata, consistent transcoding, or playback without keeping a computer awake. VLC is also not a solution for DRM streaming services.

For a permanent library, media-server software can provide a better long-term experience, although its exact compatibility and features depend on the product and receiver.
Bottom line
On desktop VLC, use Playback → Renderer and choose the Chromecast-compatible receiver. On Android, use VLC’s Cast or renderer control during playback. Start with the same-network check and a simple H.264/AAC MP4, then troubleshoot discovery, firewall rules, transcoding, and subtitles separately. VLC is convenient for occasional local playback, but a media server or receiver-native player may be better for dependable subtitles and a permanent home-media setup.
